Russia Bolsters Military On Southwestern Flank Amid NATO Buildup

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia has strengthened its southwestern flank as NATO builds up its military presence and Ukraine remains unstable, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Wednesday in remarks the United States called contrary to efforts to lower tensions.

Moscow has deployed more air defense systems in the southwest and has also deployed a “self-sufficient” contingent of troops in Crimea, Shoigu told a meeting at the Defence Ministry broadcast on state television.

“Since 2013 … we have formed four divisions, nine brigades and 22 regiments,” he said. “They include two missile brigades armed with Iskander missile complexes, which has allowed to boost fire power to destroy the potential adversary.”

Shoigu said “terrorist” groups were also active in the North Caucasus.

John Kirby, a spokesman for the U.S. State Department, said Washington had seen the comments and “if true, we believe that this would appear to run counter to ongoing efforts to stop violence and de-escalate the tensions in eastern Ukraine.”

Kirby said the United States expected Moscow to fulfill its obligations under the Minsk agreement to halt the war in eastern Ukraine and the Vienna document that attempts to provide transparency about military movements in the region.

He noted that the reports indicated the Russian buildup included troops in Crimea, which Moscow seized and later annexed.

“Crimea is and always will remain part of Ukraine. We’re not going to allow … the borders of Europe to be redrawn at the barrel of a gun,” Kirby said, calling for an “immediate end to the Russian occupation there.”

Florida Officials Find More Evidence Of Potential Local Zika Spread

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) – The Florida health department said on Wednesday it was investigating another two cases of Zika not related to travel to a place where the virus is being transmitted, raising the possibility of local Zika transmission in the continental United States.

The Florida health department said it has identified an additional case of Zika in Miami-Dade County, where it was already investigating a possible case of Zika not related to travel, and another case in Broward County, where it has been investigating a non-travel related case.

“Evidence is mounting to suggest local transmission via mosquitoes is going on in South Florida,” said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said.

“These cases fit similar transmission patterns for mosquito-borne diseases such as Chikungunya that we’ve seen in South Florida in years past.”

To confirm whether Zika is being transmitted locally, epidemiologists must survey households and neighbors within a 150-yard radius around the residence of the person who has Zika, which constitutes the flying range of the mosquitoes that carry the virus.

According to the U.S. Zika response plan, Zika transmission is defined as two or more cases not due to travel or sex with an infected person that occur in a 1-mile diameter over the course of a month. Evidence of the virus in local mosquito populations can also be used to confirm local transmission.

Florida health department officials said investigations into the new cases begins today. The state is urging residents and visitors to participate in requests for urine samples by the department in the areas of investigation. These results will help the department determine the number of people affected.

In addition to the possible cases of non-travel related transmission, Florida on Wednesday reported 328 travel-related cases of Zika. The state is monitoring 53 pregnant women who had Zika infections.

The ‘Couple Notion’ Is A Myth

We naturally think a couple is made of two people and for good reasons. When two individuals start being romantically involved and choose to be together, this notion of “couple,” or a pair of people teaming up on their life’s journey, takes form in our minds. Intuitively, we begin thinking of that new relationship as an ensemble of two folks. Right? Well, we think it’s false. The “Couple Notion” is a Myth.

2016-07-22-1469203944-4561891-Friendsatbeach_iStock_64983297_LARGE.jpg

You see when a couple gets formed, the new “unit” may look like it is a party of two, but the reality is very different. It’s more a group than anything else; it’s an extension of two. Both partners are bringing all kinds of folks along for the ride: parents, friends, siblings, work colleagues, maybe children, extended family members, ex’s, fellow college students, etc. And that group will change for sure as the couple lives on. Some new members will be added while others will simply leave. However, the couple’s reality is that its core group members will stick around and, like it or not, will have an influence on the couple’s relationship.

Soooooo… since a couple is truly an ensemble composed of a group of people, why are we surprised of its complexity? Look, human beings are emotional containers. We all start off the ride with what God has already poured in us, but as we go on, we continue to fill up our emotional containers with layers of physical and spiritual experiences. Some of these layers obviously get thicker than others and simply carry more sensitive weight. That’s why the fabric of it all makes up for who we are, or as many say, the product of our environment is simply “who we end up being.”

2016-07-22-1469204758-3709431-Coupleincrowd_iStock_71309497_XLARGE.jpg

That’s why we need to be conscious of that if we intend to see our relationship flourish. To be clear, we are not advocating that you should kick out all of your acquaintances and focus solely on your partner. In fact, it’s not only good to be inclusive and share our lives with others, it is also a responsibility. But what we are saying is that at one point, we all need to step back and remember what made us a couple at the first place! The plain reality is that we did not fall in love with our significant other’s group members. We loved the other person first and then came the crowd… If you truly care about your relationship, at one point it is very healthy to take time to step back together, just you two without the entourage. And with the summer in full bloom, it is a great opportunity to isolate “couples only time.” A time for love rejuvenation!

Reinventing a Canadian Crop As a Sweet Summer Treat

Timber. Maple Syrup. When asked of Canadian exports, you’d be forgiven if pulses didn’t also spring to mind. Yet Canadian farmers are one of the biggest producers of pulses, the edible seeds of the legume family, such as peas, chickpeas and beans. In 2014, exports were valued at over $ 3 billion, shipping to more than 150 countries around the world each year.

But why don’t Canadians make more use of this key crop in our own country?

There are many reasons why we should. Obesity rates in Canada tripled between 1985 and 2011. Pulses offer a food source that is not only high in protein and fibre, but remarkably low in fat. Furthermore, these plants require much less water and fertilizer to grow than other crops, making them a sustainable choice for farmers who wish to protect our natural resource base, and minimise agriculture’s global greenhouse gas emissions.

We believe Canadian consumers are not enticed to put more pulses on their own plates, due to a lack of product innovation. A competition that has run across the globe this year, as part of the United Nations’ International Year of Pulses, seeks to change that.

It inspired us to create BiotaGelata, a non-dairy gelato made from fermented bean milk. It has all the creaminess of a milk product, but instead of being high in fat, is high in protein. The flavours – maple walnut, dark chocolate cassis, raspberry lemonade, and passion fruit, would rival any traditional ice cream in a taste test.

2016-07-25-1469437147-343059-BiotaGelata.jpg

Not only did we want to find an innovative new use for a crop that Canada has in abundance, we wanted to create a product that would tap into the recent consumer trend towards dairy and soy alternatives. Around 16 per cent of Canadians would class themselves as lactose intolerant. That is why we have seen a rise in milks, yogurts and even ice creams that cater to this market.

However, the sugar content in alternatives can be high. BiotaGelata, on the other hand, contains less sugar than other dairy free items that often use soy as a base, as raw kidney beans contain 2.2 grams of sugar per 100 grams versus 7 grams per 100 grams for raw soybeans. The probiotics in the gelato, which are created in the fermenting process, also provide bacteria that are good for our guts. We have found that consumers are increasingly looking for this type of fermented products because it’s a healthy alternative to dairy yogurt.

This month, we took our innovation to Chicago, to the Institute of Food Technologists Expo. We pitched the product to a host of potential investors and retailers, in the hope that BiotaGelata could be coming to a freezer section near you soon.

Alberta’s agriculture is much more diverse than people realise – and we think it is time we began to make the most of it through new products Canadians can get excited about.

America Needs a Center-Left Coalition to Stop Trump

I am not a Hillary fan or a registered Democrat. I usually vote for the Green Party. But after watching coverage of the Republican National Convention I am convinced that Donald Trump and his legion of chanting supporters are a threat to democratic values in the United States and if he is elected President, to the democratic process itself.

With the selection of Virginia Senator Tim Kaine as her Vice-Presidential running mate, Hillary Clinton has begun implementing an election strategy of moving right toward the political center. Hillary must have been watching Rudy Giuliani’s weird shrieking at the Republican National Convention because her sense of direction is all fouled up. To win the November election and stop Donald Trump, Hillary and the Democrats need to veer to the left.

Hillary and the Democratic Party must build a center-left coalition that will mobilize thousands of Bernie Sanders supporters and millions of his voters. If Hillary and the Democrats go too far to the right they will alienate the young voters who energized the Sander’s campaign. They risk losing their activism and votes to Green Party candidate Jill Stein and that could be disastrous in crucial battleground states like Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Colorado, and North Carolina, throwing the election to Trump. Bernie Sanders is in the ideal position to broker a center-left coalition.

The Green Party, America’s left opposition, is certainly closer to the Democrats than they are to Trump. But because of the two-party bias in American politics, the Greens are unlikely to challenge on the national political scene for a long time. The Greens have been closed out of the televised national presidential debates and they definitely need media exposure.

This is my proposal.

In exchange for Democratic Party support for Jill Stein’s participation in the debates, Stein and the Green Party agree to support Hillary’s candidacy in the crucial swing states. In the solid Blue states the Democrats and the Greens would compete for voters, but in the battleground states the Greens would call on their supporters to vote for Hillary in a united front to defeat Trump.

Out of fairness and a commitment to democracy, Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate for President, should also be included in the debates. I hope to see all four candidates at Hofstra University for the first presidential debate on September 26. As always, I will be outside the arena with a picket sign.

Dial Up The Frequency Of Love — It’s All Good

“The world has gone crazy!”

“People have lost their minds!”

“It’s not a safe place!”

“The world is going to hell in a hand basket!”

SO.MUCH.FEAR.

How about instead of getting sucked up into that vortex, we dial up the frequency of Love?

Yes, there is a lot of upheaval, chaos, if you will. And instead of trying to control it and being afraid of it, we can look at it for what it is:

The perfect unfolding in which many blessings lie. The new paradigm emerging as the old ones crumble.

It’s all good.

Fear, scarcity and lack are not sustainable anymore. That’s why it’s showing up more than ever. It’s fighting for it’s last breath. It’s always been there – all the horrors that are happening around the world – we just know where it lives now.

It’s in our face.

Why?

Because we are waking up!

I learned that in space when light expands and hits darkness, there is initial friction when they meet before light expands some more.

So, shine on and embrace the friction, knowing that on a grander scale, everything is playing out as it should for one simple reason…

To restore balance and harmony.

Does that rub you the wrong way?

Ah, there’s the friction.

Do you want to defend the limitations of being right? After all, there’s so many stories to support why the world has gone mad. Just turn on the news, read the paper, or log in to the social networks.

Instead, dare to Love even when it seems impossible or even when it feels wrong – after all, shouldn’t we be raging when yet another act of violence has been reported across the globe? Doesn’t that show we care? So, how can we love when atrocities are happening around the world?

How can we not?

I do know from experience that Love is the most powerful frequency on the planet and it’s always there because it’s all there is. We are conduits for that frequency. We can at any moment choose to allow Love to flow through us.

Talk about true power.

Ask yourself how it feels and what it looks like to dial up the frequency of Love when, in that moment, you want to react and post away on social media the expression of your rage.

Pause and pay attention to what comes up for you.

I definitely have my reactions to what’s happening in the world and I have my feelings about it. When I’m triggered, I step away and deal with my emotions first. I allow them to show me what it is I’m really upset about.

I check in with myself before I post anything. Am I coming from a place of Love? If not, I do not post.

These are extraordinary times to be living on the planet. Extraordinary times to be choosing Love.

So no matter what’s happening around you, I dare you to dial up the frequency of Love.

And then pay attention to what happens.

Because, as a friend of mine always says, “It’s all good.”

And it is.

It’s Time to Stand Up for Truth and Intelligence

In a time when the American news media focused on reporting facts, rather than entertaining the public, iconic broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite made a comment about American values and education that seems even more powerful today. Averred Cronkite, “”[w]hatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.”

Indeed, as “the most trusted man in America” well understood, nothing is more costly to a democratic society than ignorance. We are seeing this on a daily basis today in the U.S. Much of the violence Americans are seeing is a product of ignorance, as is much of the rhetoric accepted by supporters of the GOP.

Donald Trump’s apparent ignorance about topics ranging from economics to international affairs has been well documented, but far more troubling is the ignorance of his followers, who do not appear to have the critical thinking skills or perhaps simply the reliable information necessary to see ignorance, lies, and twisted truths when they encounter them.

The fear mongering that Trump has succeeded in using to gain supporters can be successful only in a society governed not by information and intelligence, but by fear and ignorance. Unfortunately, the GOP’s leadership champions ignorance and distortion of fact.

When candidates make ridiculous claims such as Ben Carson’s publicly expressed view that the Pyramids of Giza were not tombs, but grain silos built by the Biblical son of Jacob to get ready for the famine in Genesis or when Donald Trump comments about Ted Cruz’s father on the basis of a report from the National Enquirer, it’s a symptom of deeper problems. Such comments would not be taken seriously by a public that was well informed and would be immediately refuted by party leadership, unless of course that leadership is itself stunningly ignorant or cynically willing to turn a deaf ear on the dangers of ignorance and lies in order to gain power.

Nor would these types of comments gain any traction if the news media uniformly called them out on the grounds that they lack verity. As it stands, only parts of the news media see their job as upholding truth.

The Washington Post clearly is one media outlet that recognizes its responsibility in the American democratic system. It just published a full-page editorial on the dangers of a Trump presidency. The newspaper notes that Mr. Trump’s ignorance, arrogance, and aggressiveness combined with his “politics of denigration and division” present a clear threat to the American democratic system.

This is correct, but the threat is really much more pernicious. The true danger to American democracy lies in a significant portion of the voting public that lacks the ability or information necessary to recognize what a threat Mr. Trump actually represents. Rather than drawing support, his wanton disregard for facts and open ignorance of the Constitution as noted by the Post should send a shiver through anyone invested in democracy.

Americans are faced with a very serious choice this November. In the past, whether Republican or Democrat, it has seemed clear that presidential candidates have shared a commitment to protecting the Constitution and democratic values, even if their specific ideas about how best to protect those things vary. It is not at all clear that Mr. Trump shares that commitment.

It’s a sad reality that the U.S. has arrived at this point, but we are here and it is time for those who support truth, facts, and intelligence–whether they are conservatives or liberals–to work hard to protect American democracy. The November election is nothing less than a vote on the future of that democratic system.

If we fail, and elect Mr. Trump, we face a very real possibility of paying that hefty price Walter Cronkite warned us to avoid. Whether it is through libraries, schools, or the media, there is nothing more important than ensuring that our society is well informed and able to recognize genuine threats to democracy, particularly when they come in the guise of claims to make America great again.

As a journalist, Mr. Cronkite recognized his most important job was not to entertain but to educate the public. As members of the Fourth Estate, journalists today need to, perhaps more than ever, recognized that their job is to protect democracy by informing the public. The Washington Post took this responsibility very seriously; one would hope that other news outlets follow their lead.

11 Ways To Instantly Connect With Anyone

2016-07-21-1469128595-7816956-HowToInstantlyConnectWithAnyoneHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. For example, Lieberman discovered that we feel social pain, such as the loss of a relationship, in the same part of the brain that we feel physical pain.

The primary function of this brain area is to alert us to threats to our survival. It makes you realize how powerful and important social connection is. We’re hard wired to be social creatures.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.” -Ralph Nichols

MRIs of the brain show that social thinking and analytical thinking involve entirely different neural networks and that they operate something like a seesaw. When you engage in analytical thinking, the social part of your brain quiets down, but as soon as you’re finished, the social network springs back to life.

The social brain is the end of the seesaw where the fat kid sits; it’s our brain’s default setting.

Given that social connection is such a fundamental human need, you’d think that it would be easy to connect with everyone we meet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Against our own self-interest, we get bogged down by shyness, self-consciousness, cynicism, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, and arrogance.

If you can get that baggage out of the way, you can connect with anyone–even those who are still holding on to their own. Here are some tips that will help you to connect instantly with everyone you meet.

1. Leave a strong first impression. Most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to connect with anyone.

First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

2. Be the first to venture beyond the superficial. Our first conversation or two with a new acquaintance tends to be pretty superficial. We portray a careful picture of ourselves, and we stick to nice, safe topics. We talk about the weather and people we know in common and share the most basic details about ourselves. But if you really want to connect with somebody, try upping the ante and revealing the real you. You don’t need to get too personal, but it’s important to let the other person know what you’re passionate about. Most of the time, if you open up, the other person will follow your lead and do the same.

3. Ask good questions. If the other person seems hesitant to open up, encourage them to do so by asking substantial questions. “What do you do?” doesn’t further the relationship nearly as much as, “Why did you choose your profession?” Search for questions that will help you to understand what makes the other person tick, without getting too personal.

4. Learn from them. In the course of his research, Lieberman concluded that our educational system would be much more effective if we tapped into the social side of learning, rather than trying to squash it. For example, the best way to help an eighth-grader struggling with math would be to have him get help from another student. Apply that same principle to your life, and be willing to learn from the person you’re trying to connect with. Not only does that make them feel more bonded to you, it makes them feel important. It also shows that you’re willing to be vulnerable and aren’t too proud to admit that you have much to learn.

5. Don’t make them regret removing the mask. If your new acquaintance does you the honor of opening up, don’t make them regret it. Sarcasm, criticism, or jokes that might make the other person feel judged for what they’ve shared are major faux paus. Instead, empathize with their approach to life, which you can do even if you don’t agree with their beliefs, and then reciprocate by revealing more about yourself.

6. Look for the good in them. Our culture can often predispose us toward cynicism. We seem to focus on finding reasons not to like people instead of reasons to like them. Shut that cynical voice off, and concentrate on looking for the good in a new acquaintance. For one thing, that keeps you from writing someone off too soon, but more importantly, when you expect the best from people, they’re likely to deliver it.

7. Smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good about you as a result.

8. Use their name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet them. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask their name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep their name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see them.

9. Follow the platinum rule. We all know the golden rule, and it’s pretty easy to follow. The platinum rule is harder to follow because it requires us to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not only does doing so make the other person more comfortable–and therefore more likely to open up–but it also proves that you’ve been listening and have really heard what they’ve been telling you. And that shows extra effort on your part.

10. Don’t make it a contest. We’ve all seen the stereotypical sit-com scene where two guys in a bar spend the night trying to one-up each other. The same thing happens when you meet someone new. Their accomplishments and life experience sneak up on you and make you feel the urge to make yourself look just as good (if not better). Doing so may stroke your ego, but it doesn’t help you to connect with them. It keeps you focused on yourself when you should be trying to learn about them and find common ground.

11. Turn off your inner voice. One giant thing that keeps us from connecting with other people is that we don’t really listen. Instead, we’re thinking while the other person is talking. We’re so focused on what we’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect us down the road that we fail to hear what’s really being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

You must turn off this inner voice if you want to connect deeply with people. So what if you forget what you were going to say or if the conversation moves in a different direction before you have a chance to make your point. If your real goal is to connect with a person, you have to shut off your own soundtrack long enough to focus on what they’re telling you.

Bringing It All Together

The good news is that we’re programmed to connect with each other; we just keep getting in our own way. Try these tips the next time you meet someone new, and watch a superficial conversation turn into a real connection.

How do you connect with people? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Alcohol Is Even Deadlier Than You Think, Study Suggests

A new study suggests that alcohol is a direct cause of cancer in several areas of the body.

The study, published Thursday in the scientific journal Addiction, consists of a major review of 10 years’ worth of studies from several organizations, including the World Cancer Research Fund, the American Institute for Cancer Research and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

And its conclusions are dire.

Nearly 6 percent of cancer deaths worldwide can be linked to alcohol, including in people who drink light to moderate amounts of alcohol, the study concludes. “From a public health perspective, alcohol is estimated to have caused approximately half a million deaths from cancer in 2012,” wrote study author Jennie Connor, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Otago in New Zealand.

The study determined that there is a strong link between alcohol consumption and cancer in specific areas of the body, such as the liver, colon, esophagus and female breast. There are also causal contributions in other areas such as the prostate, pancreas and skin.

How alcohol causes cancer is not deeply understood, according to the study, but it is thought to depend on the “target organ.” For example, cancers of the throat, mouth and liver can be largely attributed to a carcinogenic compound called acetaldehyde. Salivary acetaldehyde levels have been found to reach high levels when drinking.

Breast tissue is another area that seems to be particularly susceptible to alcohol.

Connor noted the United Kingdom’s Million Women Cohort study, which found that women who drank 70 to 140 grams of alcohol per week experienced a 13 percent increase in breast cancer and a 5 percent increase in total cancer compared to those who drank less than 20 grams per week.

Unfortunately, the amount you drink might not matter all that much. While heavy drinkers have a higher risk of liver, colon and laryngeal cancer than light drinkers, all drinkers have the same risk of mouth, esophagus, breast and pharynx cancer.

Connor also acknowledges that some of the studies she reviewed show that those who drink light to moderate of alcohol have a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease than abstainers.

But many epidemiologists agree that research confirms alcohol actually causes cancer, Connor wrote, while the relationship between drinking and heart disease is not as conclusive.

For example, other lifestyle factors beyond alcohol consumption ― such as a person’s healthy behavior and demographic conditions ― typically put abstainers at a higher risk than those who moderately drink. Connor cites a 2005 study that showed 27 out of 30 risk factors for cardiovascular disease were more prevalent in abstainers than moderate drinkers.

“Promotion of health benefits from drinking at moderate levels is seen increasingly as disingenuous or irrelevant in comparison to the increase in risk of a range of cancers,” she wrote in the study.

As a solution to alcohol-attributed cancer, Connor suggests everyone should reduce their alcohol consumption, not just heavy drinkers.

“Population-wide reduction in alcohol consumption will have an important effect on the incidence of [cancer], while targeting the heaviest drinkers alone has limited potential,” she wrote in the study.

However, most people today are hesitant to adapt to the facts. While the majority of the population readily accepts that smoking causes lung cancer, “alcohol’s causal role is perceived to be more complex than tobacco’s,” Connor wrote.

For this reason, simply getting people to stop drinking to prevent cancer ― as many have done in the case of smoking ― is broadly considered unacceptable.

Connor also warns of the backlash that research such as her own may receive from alcohol companies.

“There will be orchestrated attempts to discredit the science and the researchers, and to confuse the public,” she wrote. “The stakes are high for alcohol industries when there is no argument, on current evidence, for a safe level of drinking with respect to cancer.”

Ultimately, alcohol is just one of many factors that can cause cancer, but Connor’s study suggests reducing consumption or even partaking in a “dry period” as steps in the right direction to reduce your risk.

From the Trenches: Advice to Parent’s Raising a Child With Special Needs

SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT SAM. To her delight, Carol Prosser gave birth to a big, beautiful boy in 1988. Shortly after Sam’s arrival it became apparent that something was wrong…But what? At six months, the screaming started and didn’t stop. Sam didn’t coo and make babbling baby sounds. He didn’t talk on time, he didn’t walk on time and he didn’t potty train on time. Although he looked “normal,” it was obvious that there was something different about him. Grandpa was of the opinion that Prosser’s son was just spoiled and when Sam started school, some of his teachers concurred. After countless doctor appointments, including a multitude of tests and various diagnoses, Prosser was told the devastating news–Sam was autistic. “From the Trenches,” a heart-wrenching account of one mother’s heroic battle against the ignorance and misunderstanding that she and her son faced, reveals the shocking truth behind this often misdiagnosed condition. Prosser’s hard-won knowledge is an inspiration to parents, educators and society to be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem.

Bill Maher Reveals ’25 More Things You Don’t Know’ About Hillary Clinton

Bill Maher has been imagining what Hillary Clinton’s rivals would say in Us Weekly’s “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me,” ever since the Democratic nominee answered the magazine’s questions herself in April.

In recent weeks, the “Real Time with Bill Maher” host has poked fun at Bernie Sanders, Ted Cruz and Donald TrumpAnd this week, with the Democratic National Convention just days away, it was Clinton’s turn to be spoofed.

“We’ve done a bunch of the other candidates and we thought we’d circle back because this is her big week coming up,” Maher said Friday, before letting loose with such wisecracks as her “secret service codename is ‘Nutcracker” and she is surprised nobody’s noticed “that I’ve switched from pantsuits to space suits.”

Check out the clip above to see what else was included in the list.

Here’s how Maher previously spoofed Sanders:

This is how Maher imagined Ted Cruz would reply:

And here are Donald Trump’s fictional responses:

WATCH: Refocus (Getting Back on Track)

There are a lot of things going on that are demanding our focus – and take us away from where we can be most powerful and do the most good for ourselves and others. I hope this will help.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

The Psychological Reason Conservatives Band Together Faster Than Liberals

When Donald Trump picked the Mulan-hating, Titanic-loving gubernatorial goober Mike Pence to be his vice-presidential pick, he said that it was about “party unity.” And indeed, as the flopping of the Never Trump movement at the Republican National Convention shows, the GOP has indeed rallied around Trump — why else would Ted Cruz get booed offstage for withholding his endorsement?

It’s a fascinating display of what political psychologists have come to call “shared reality theory.” Similar to how some people need certainty more than others, researchers have found that people are more or less motivated to get their beliefs reconfirmed by the people around them. Sharing reality functions as “a sort of social glue,” University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign psychologist Chadly Stern and Stanford University researcher Robb Willer write in a new column for the Washington Post, “without which we would be unable to communicate, work in teams and achieve shared goals.” When you have a strong sense of shared reality, it helps you to come to think that your “beliefs reflect objective reality” and that they’re shared by your friends and family.

Related: If You Want Less Police Violence, Hire More Female Cops

As you may surmise by the way fans of right-wing commentator Rush Limbaugh refer to themselves as “dittoheads,” studies indicate that conservative people have a higher need for “shared reality.” Liberals, on the other hand, tend toward the opposite — rather than wanting to share the same reality with their kin, they’re more motivated to be unique, agreeing with statements like “in group activities, I’m somewhat of a nonconformist,” while conservatives are more likely to agree that it’s important to them to “see the world in a similar way” as others do. And in matters both political (abortion) and nonpolitical (coffee) conservatives are more likely to overestimate how much their beliefs match those of their fellow conservatives, while liberals underestimate how much their beliefs are like other liberals. And guess what: According to Stern’s research, people who report that they think their peers share their beliefs with them are more likely to vote.

Therein lies the difficulty of organizing liberals, which Stern and Willer compare to the “proverbial herding of cats” in their Post column. The liberal impulse to nonconformity may be what drives social progress — but it also makes it harder for the party to unify, the Democratic Party, to be precise. It’s a fascinating irony: Liberals might be theoretically more collectivist, pushing for policy that benefits the public good, but their individualism makes it harder to build a coalition. Just ask your nearest Bernie bro.

Servant Problem, The

Servant Problem, The

In Britain today there are more servants than there were in Victorian times. As well as the traditional butlers, maids, valets and cooks who wait on the superrich, there are now tens of thousands of nannies, childminders, cleaners, aupairs, housekeepers, gardeners and drivers, together with the new ‘concierge services’, all ensuring that the middle classes live more comfortably. What is behind this spectacular rise? What is it that makes people from impoverished countries travel thousands of miles to wait on the well-off classes of the wealthier nations? And why is it that – contrary to one’s expectations – the twenty-first century marks a new high point of domestic employment? The Servant Problem explores this extraordinary growth in paid domestic employment and the global trends that sustain it._x000D_The author shows how policies introduced and encouraged by governments and global financial organisations have made domestic employment cheaper, easier and more necessary. But she shows how, equally, these policies have intensified inequalities that make life worse for millions of people. Inequalities of income have increased dramatically, work practices have become less rather than more family friendly, changes in taxation and benefits have favoured the_x000D_most wealthy and punished the worst off, and childcare provision still expects women to stay at home and look after the children._x000D_Drawing on interviews with employees from some of the richest areas of London the author also explores the reality of domestic labour in Britain today, revealing the lifestyles of some of the wealthiest people and how their domestic workers some of the lowest paid fit in._x000D_Employing domestic help is at best an individual solution to a social problem at worst, it is the use of another human being to enhance and display wealth and status. In The Servant Problem Rosie Cox provides a telling exposé of domestic work today and challenges the inequalities and practices that sustain it._x000D_‘Filippa showed me in to the large open-plan living room, then quickly ushered me to her own room. It was just two metres square and had been made from the half landing of a staircase that was no longer used. There was a single bed, a small chest of drawers and a small television. Sitting on her narrow bed, Filippa told me about her life as an au pair in London’

Elizabeth Warren Blasts Donald Trump’s ‘2-Bit Dictator’ RNC Speech

Elizabeth Warren just tore into Donald Trump’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention.

The Democratic senator from Massachusetts, who’s no fan of the reality TV star-turned-GOP presidential candidate, didn’t hold back when asked about Trump’s address during “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Thursday night.

“I’ve got to tell you, that speech tonight, he sounded like some two-bit dictator of some country that you couldn’t find on a map,” Warren said. “He sounded like a dictator of a small country rather than a man who is running for the highest office of the strongest democracy on the face of this earth.”

Warren dubbed the 2016 RNC as “the nastiest, most divisive convention that we’ve seen in half a century,” and described Trump as a “dangerous man” who did not have the answers to people’s problems.

Check it out in the clip above.

My Best Friend Is 20 Years Older Than Me, Here’s What I’ve Learned

My best friend is a Filipino with kids as old as me.

It also doesn’t help that she’s female and I’m male.

Now pay attention. I want you to notice what you think about this. I want you to notice what your immediate assumptions are. Do you believe me? Are you not sure? Do you think I must be lying?

Most of the time society assumes the worst.

They think we MUST be in a relationship. We MUST be hiding it from absolutely everybody. But no matter how much dirt my friends or her friends try to dig out, they still come up empty-handed every time.

That’s because there’s nothing happening.

You know what we do? We do things that normal friends would. We sit and talk. We laugh about work. We confide and trust one another. We go out. The chemistry that everyone else sees is so easily mistaken for love, but that’s just because we know each other so well.

I can’t tell you how this happened. The stars aligned and for some reason we had the perfect amount of compatibility. But if you think about it you’ll see why we’re compatible. I’m 23 and I’m very much open to everything. I want to learn from the experience of everyone.

What better way to learn about life than to talk to someone twice my age from another country? And guess what? I’ve learned more than you can ever imagine. It’s the lessons that I’ve learned from this wonderful person that have shaped my decisions for the past year.

She told me one thing, and that was to stay single and enjoy life while I can. She got married when she was 21 and wished she could’ve done things over. I’m currently out in San Francisco, writing in my blog and travelling the United States. I owe it all to her.

The bigger point is that society is too often focused on the wrong things–like age, gender, race, and background. It’s for this reason that our growth as human beings becomes stunted. We only hang out with those our age who want to party and fall in love on a whim. Why not become friends with someone older? Why not learn about the implications of a divorce and marrying early and having children?

There’s a whole wealth of experience that we’re missing out on. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Many of my friends rushed to get married before they got to travel outside of their own state. I know from my experience with my best friend that this might not always be the best plan of action.

I learned so much from her.

I learned that being 40 doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun like you’re 21. I learned that being a single parent demands a departure from how you acted before a divorce. I learned patience. I learned that there’s a point where friends become family. I learned that Filipino people have the best hospitality.

My decision to commit social suicide by being seen with a woman twice my age in public paid dividends for me that I’ll continue to reap for years to come.

Friendships can be weird, but I’m convinced that it’s the most beautiful thing human beings are capable of creating. Don’t limit yourself because of what people may think. I say, go for it.

6 Things You Need For Your Peeling, Sunburned Face

Sunburn is THE worst.

It hurts to move, breathe and generally exist when your skin feels like lava. It also makes you molt like a caterpillar, but instead of becoming a butterfly, you just become patchy.

So, what do you do when your face is doing that super fun peeling thing and you’d like it to stop?

Put the exfoliator down and sit on your hands. You need to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

We’ve rounded up some of our fave post-sunburn treatments.

1. First Aid Beauty, Ultra Repair Instant Oatmeal Mask ($ 9 – $ 24

The most important ingredient in this mask is probably the strangest sounding: oats. A combo of colloidal oatmeal and avena sativa oat bran helps sooth your angry face and turn the redness down a notch. Wear the mask for about 10 minutes and the result is soft skin with a natural glow. Also, the smell? AMAZING.

2. belif, The True Cream Aqua Bomb ($ 22 – 38)

Riding the blue gel waves. : @beautyfindsadventures

A photo posted by @belifusa on

This stuff feels like you splashed your face with water ― it’s that hydrating. The texture is almost gel-like, but the best word for it is: bouncy. We’d recommend using a heavy-handed coat of this before bed. We did (after a really bad sunburn) and it cut down the days/severity of peeling substantially.

3. e.l.f. Daily Hydration Moisturizer ($ 8)

This is a moisturizer that has all the ingredients of a highbrow product with the price point of a drugstore one. It’s got jojoba, aloe, vitamin E, cucumber, shea butter, grape and orange, and the packaging makes it extremely easy to use. Where you’d likely use the True Cream Aqua Bomb before bed, this is great for use during the day. It’s light and layer-able without being oily.

4. Glossier Moisturizing Moon Mask ($ 22)

Those with extra sensitive skin: This is your saving grace. Thick like a lotion, this mask feels like you just globbed on moisturizer ― in a good way. It’s fragrance free and paraben free, and (as it says in the above caption) it feels incredible if you put it in the fridge before you use it. Leave on for 20 minutes, rinse off, and find skin supple and dewy.

5. Aquaphor Lip Repair ($ 3.99)

Red, pink or sheer? Sometimes Aquaphor is all you need to make a statement.

A photo posted by Aquaphor US (@aquaphorus) on

We wish they sold this lip balm in bulk because we go through it like crazy, especially when our lips are puffy from the sun. You might think this is just like Vaseline, but you’d be wrong. This stuff conditions, protects and provides relief (yay chamomile essence!). Bonus: It’s also great to keep with you when wearing matte lipstick ― it’ll even out your lips where the color has cracked and let you spread the color out again without reapplication.

6. Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen SPF 55 ($ 8.88)

You already know you’re supposed to use sunscreen, but with your current peeling face, the damage has already been done. So … let’s prep for next time! This baby is great for sensitive skin types who are susceptible to sunscreen-inspired breakouts. It’s also a higher SPF, which your face needs after the beating its already taken.

Got your own tip for battling sunburn peel? Tell us in the comments!

LAUSANNE, Switzerland/MOSCOW (Reuters) – Sport’s highest tribunal said on Thursday it had rejected Russia’s appeal against the exclusion of its track and field athletes from the Olympic Games starting in Rio in 15 days’ time, drawing swift condemnation from Moscow.

The decision increases the possibility that the International Olympic Committee will now ban Russia from all sports in Rio, a grave blow to a nation that prides itself on its status as a sporting superpower.

The Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport said in a statement: “CAS rejects the claims/appeal of the Russian Olympic Committee and 68 Russian athletes.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “I certainly regret such a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport which refers to absolutely all of our athletes.”

Russia had argued the blanket ban was unfair to individual athletes with no record of doping.

“The principle of collective responsibility is hardly acceptable,” Peskov said.

Double Olympic champion pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva described the CAS decision as “the funeral of athletics”.

Russian track and field athletes were banned from international competition in November after an independent commission set up by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) found rampant state-sponsored doping in Russian athletics.

The ban was imposed by the IAAF, the global governing body for athletics, which reconfirmed it last month, saying there were still considerable problems with anti-doping in Russia.

The appeal to CAS was launched by the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) and 68 Russian athletes who said they were being punished despite not having failed drugs tests, and that they should be eligible to compete in Rio.

On Monday, another WADA report revealed evidence of systematic and widespread state-sponsored doping by Russian competitors before and at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

This has prompted the IOC to consider banning Russia from Rio altogether.

The IOC is expected to reach a final decision on Sunday and has said it will take the CAS ruling into account.

The IAAF said it was pleased that CAS had supported its ban.

“While we are thankful that our rules and our power to uphold our rules and the anti-doping code have been supported, this is not a day for triumphant statements,” IAAF president Sebastian Coe said.

“I didn’t come into this sport to stop athletes from competing. It is our federation’s instinctive desire to include, not exclude.”

Stop The Violence And Hate: 5 Things You Can Do Now

2016-07-20-1469048933-7840592-sNEIGHBORHOODsmall.jpg

I am sure everyone reading this can agree on one thing — the violence and hate needs to stop, and it needs to stop now. I am talking about the daily violence and hatred that is going on around the world. The fire of violence is consuming us, and it seems to be a raging fire. The flames are being fanned every day, on TV, in the news, on social media, on talk radio, at the dinner tables, in the offices down the street.

The violence is committed in the name of justice, in the name of an ideology, in the name of enforcement, for revenge or to right a wrong. I am peaceful man and I will confess it hurts my heart to see such death and hated. We have so much innocent blood being shed for… what?

As novelist and humanitarian Wendall Berry once said, “Violence breeds violence. Acts of violence committed in justice or in affirmation of rights or in defense of peace do not end violence. They prepare and justify its continuation.”

So what can you do to stop it? You are just one person right? What can one person do? I think there are simple things we can all do to help stop it.

1. Start with you. As the old song said: “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” If there is to be peace, then you need to start with you by not supporting, condoning, endorsing violence in any way. I see messages on social media that say, “Well I am glad they got justice — they deserved it!” They are endorsing the murder of another human being for justice. This is not justice, it just murder. So even if you don’t commit violence yourself, don’t be the one who feeds the beast in the form of encouragement. Don’t support this kind of behavior anywhere. Make a daily commitment (not just lip service) to being kind and loving to everyone you meet and interact with. Show others in the world that kindness comes on all colors shapes and sizes. It is not going to be easy — nothing worthwhile ever is — and you are going to have days when you are tired and fail. But the next day, get dust yourself off and try again.

2. Start with your family. Teach your children to be kind, to be aware of other people feelings, to give back and to take care of others. Teach them empathy and caring and make it one of your family values. The way to change a culture is first and foremost at home first. Teach them to respect all people or all races creeds and colors. As a parent, show them through your actions how to be a kind soul. Don’t allow them to talk bad about others or to express hate. Let them know that is not how kind people act and that it is not acceptable behavior. As Nelson Mandela once said, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for loves comes more naturally to the human heart than the opposite.”

3. Start with your neighborhood. Do you know your neighbors? Reach out to them and get to know them. Be bold and knock on their door and say hi. Tell them as neighbors you need to stick together. Have a block party and get to know one another. Let them know you have their back. Take initiative and form a community association. Talk to each other. Have a community of connection and kindness. Our nation is a nation, but it is really made up of one neighborhood, and many neighborhoods make up a town, and many towns make up a state. Many states create a nation. You can’t change a nation but you can change your little pocket of the world, by creating and spreading peace and kindness in your neighborhood.

4. Start to volunteer. There are lots or people in the world that need care and help. When someone volunteers their time and energy to help someone else — hearts are healed and hatred dissipates. It’s hard to hate when you see people cares about you. I have done volunteer work with children, and I have seen the transformation power of what love can do to heal.

5. Start to listen. We need to stop being so polarized — no one wants to listen to anyone who doesn’t agree with them. In Washington DC, politicians just don’t listen to anyone on the other side of the aisle. We must start listening to other people with an open mind and trying to understand their world, their perspective. As Tennessee Williams once said, “I think hate is a feeling that can only exist where there is no understanding.”

I am asking you today in reading this to commit to being a bright and shining well of peace, good will and kindness. Let the cool and deep water of that well extinguish the flames of violence and hate.

10 Reasons Life Is Better When You’re Tall

This goes out to anyone who has been asked “how’s the weather up there?” in their lifetime.

It’s not easy sticking out among a crowd and unintentionally commanding attention when you enter a room. In fact, it can be downright uncomfortable at times.

But in reality, tall people really are a head above the rest ― literally and figuratively. There are some major health and lifestyle perks to having a few extra inches than the average person and it’s high time (sorry) tall people celebrate them.

Below are several magnificent reasons you should embrace your height.

1. Tall people may be smarter.

A 2014 University of Edinburgh study found that taller individuals may be more intelligent. Researchers examined more than 6,000 unrelated subjects and discovered there was a small correlation between height and higher IQs. You genius, you.

2. Your risk of diabetes is lower (if you’re a woman).

Here’s a reason to celebrate being a vertically inclined lady. A collective analysis of studies published in the journal Obesity Reviews showed that women with a taller stature were less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. The risk for developing the condition was the same for men, whether they were tall or short.

3. You might be more successful.

Forget commanding any old room ― you might take charge of the boardroom. Research shows that CEOs are taller on average. Additionally, about half of male Fortune 500 CEOs are at least three inches taller than other males who aren’t in as prominent positions, Bloomberg reported. Boom.

4. Tall individuals may be paid more at work.

Take this to the bank. Research shows that even just an extra inch of height could be worth approximately $ 800 in more earnings per year, The Atlantic reported. Another analysis published in the Journal of Human Capital found that being in the 75th percentile for height is associated with a 9 to 15 percent salary increase.

5. You might be less likely to have dementia.

Another University of Edinburgh study found that people who are shorter had a greater risk of dying with dementia than those who were taller. The link between height and dementia risk was also stronger in men than women.

It’s important to note that being short isn’t necessarily an indicator of dementia. It could just be because shorter heights are associated with greater risk factors for the illness, like poor childhood nutrition or genetic influences

6. You’re at a lower risk for heart disease.

Three cheers for a healthy heart. While your height might put you at risk for some heart troubles, such as atrial fibrillation (AKA an irregular heartbeat), it also could protect you from scarier issues. Research shows taller individuals are less at risk for congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease

7. Tall people are happier.

Here’s something to smile about: Tall individuals report more positive emotions than shorter ones, according to a 2008 study. Those with a greater stature were also less likely to report feelings of anger and sadness. And the good news here is that happiness is a contagious feeling, so you’re imparting that joy to other people. Bravo.

8. You might be more productive.

Your height could be an indicator of what you cross off your to-do list. A recent paper published in the National Bureau of Economic Research found over a seven-year study that taller individuals tended to be more productive in their jobs. Researchers made their assessment based on the hourly earnings of each of the subjects over the course of the study.

9. You’re seen as more confident.

There’s no excuse to not strut your stuff because the world sees you as a powerhouse anyway. Research shows taller individuals appear more confident and had better social skills in adolescence because they were more likely to participate in activities like sports and school clubs.

10. The weather really is great up here.

Ultimately, being tall rocks. You’re able to reach things on high shelves. You have unobstructed views at crowded concerts. You’re better equipped to play basketball, if that’s your thing. You dominate whatever space you’re in.

So the next time someone asks, “How’s the weather up there?” tell them it’s pretty darn sunny.

Why Nobody Believes the Numbers: Distinguishing Fact from Fiction in Population Health Management

Why Nobody Believes the Numbers: Distinguishing Fact from Fiction in Population Health Management

Why Nobody Believes the Numbers introduces a unique viewpoint to population health outcomes measurement: Results/ROIs should be presented as they are, not as we wish they would be. This viewpoint contrasts sharply with vendor/promoter/consultant claims along two very important dimensions:(1) Why Nobody Believes presents outcomes/ROIs achievable right here on this very planet…(2) …calculated using actual data rather than controlled substances.Indeed, nowhere in healthcare is it possible to find such sharply contrasting worldviews, methodologies, and grips on reality. Why Nobody Believes the Numbers includes 12 case studies of vendors, carriers, and consultants who were apparently playing hooky the day their teacher covered fifth-grade math, as told by an author whose argument style can be so persuasive that he was once able to convince a resort to sell him a timeshare. The book''s lesson: no need to believe what your vendor tells you — instead you can estimate your own savings using “ingredients you already have in your kitchen.” Don''t be intimidated just because you lack a PhD in biostatistics, or even a Masters, Bachelor''s, high-school equivalency diploma or up-to-date inspection sticker. Why Nobody Believes the Numbers explains how to determine if the ROIs are real…and why they usually aren''t. You''ll learn how to:Figure out whether you are moving the needle or just crediting a program with changes that would have happened anyway Judge whether the ROIs your vendors report are plausible or even arithmetically possible Synthesize all these insights into RFPs and contracts that truly hold vendors accountable for results

Through the Lens that Predicted Brexit, See the Next Big Shock Coming

We are living in a second age of discovery–a second Renaissance. That’s not a fact; it’s a frame. And looking through it, many of today’s shocks make a lot more sense. That’s because the big, defining circumstances of the first Renaissance parallel ours today: new maps; new media; a leap in health, wealth and education, alongside rising inequality; a flourishing of genius and of globalization’s unintended risks. We can look at the surprising ways in which Renaissance Europe transformed under stresses analogous to our own and stretch our own thinking about how events might unfold for us, too.

Seen through this frame, the result of Britain’s Brexit referendum was predictable–and predicted. The climate of declining trust within the EU is akin to the climate which led up to Martin Luther’s Reformation. That event split Europe into Protestant and Catholic halves, 500 years ago. The Renaissance also helps us to imagine possible outcomes to the South China Sea dispute (during the first age of discovery, treaties that sought to carve up the world’s precious resources rarely outlasted the maps upon which they had been based). It leads us to anticipate the consequences of a possible–but for many, still unimaginable–Trump presidency. (Until now, Trump’s campaign has mirrored the improbable rise of another political outsider, Girolamo Savonarola, the populist friar who ignited the Bonfire of the Vanities in the 1490s.) And it helps us to make better sense of political extremism more broadly. Social tensions blossomed 500 years ago, in lock-step with the unintended consequences of globalization (such as the death of most Native Americans from European diseases).

But far more important than event-specific insights, this Renaissance frame brings into focus the principles by which we can best weather the broad shocks that are yet to come.

#DontTakeQuo (for an answer)
The political status quo enjoys a certain inertia. It’s hard to make big changes to the way things already are, and so big things tend not to change. This belief is widely held, and it leads many of us to discount certain possibilities (in the UK, of Brexit; in the US, of a Trump presidency), to the point where we may not even prepare for them at all.

But in a Renaissance moment, a better belief is that this inertia has already been broken. So much that we once took for granted is now in flux that even the basic social bargains holding us all together are disintegrating. When it comes to our political institutions and socio-economic policies, we now face a stark choice: “renew it or lose it”. In Florence five hundred years ago, Savonarola discovered that a fire from below, once lit, burns upwards. (The political establishment of his day, the Medici, figured that out only after the friar had torn control of their city from them.) In our own time, that fire has already been ignited–by Donald Trump, by Bernie Sanders, by Jeremy Corbyn in the UK. You don’t need to be a Sanders loyalist to feel its burn. Pick up a spade to direct the blaze, according to your politics. But don’t hold onto the status quo; it’s already history.

#ImWithNick
One big difference, surely, between Renaissance society 500 years ago and our world today is that we are far more scientific now, in our thoughts and habits. After the Polish astronomer Copernicus published his theory of a sun-centered universe, it took Renaissance Europe over a century to embrace that revolutionary notion. Today we are far more ready to adapt our beliefs and behaviours to the truths revealed by science.

But we have further to go than we think. Climate change: that’s our Copernican revolution. And it asks us to change so profoundly our thinking about the relationship between heaven and earth–about how happens up there depends on what we do down here–that despite decades of accumulating evidence, individually and collectively we still have a hard time adapting our habits. We need to welcome deeper into our lives the evidence that science is revealing to us. Ultimately, reality is hard to reject. Healthy societies are those that adapt to, rather than defy it.

#FFTB (Fortune Favors the Bold)
When events shock us repeatedly, one instinct is to start playing it safe. But in a Renaissance moment, amidst chaos and uncertainty, “It is better to be impetuous than cautious” (Machiavelli, The Prince, 1532).

That’s because the general upheaval around us quickly renders established habits, assumptions and ways of seeing invalid. Stasis–in a job at risk of automation, or invested in an asset bubble, for example–becomes downright dangerous. Impetuous choice-making and action, by us and by those around us, can help shatter these expiring patterns and force us into new ones, to keep pace with a rapidly changing world. If we fail to take bold steps amidst uncertainty, then if and when disaster strikes, Machiavelli schooled, people “should not blame Fortune, but rather their own indolence.”

It’s important to note that Machiavelli aimed this harsh medicine at the princes of Italy–the governors of his day. Citizens need public help to take personal risks, because risk-taking requires resources, and our individual lives are full of practical resource constraints–such as advancing age, or inadequate savings, or heavy debt, or the unaffordability of moving to a booming city. The better the safety net, the higher we can climb.

The present is a second Renaissance. How well we live by the principles this moment demands will determine whether we repeat the glories of the first Renaissance, the agonies, or both.

How I Parent My Hypersensitive Son — And Why There’s Hope For Us Both

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

Last week, eight rambunctious first-graders were dropped off at our apartment for my son’s birthday party, and I was the only adult in the room. Not so long ago, I wouldn’t have felt comfortable even if I’d had other grown-up support. As I’ve written before, birthday celebrations often overwhelmed my tender little guy. But he’s changed so much in the past year that I decided to give it a go, even sans my business-traveling wife—and I’m very glad I did. Watching him chat with his friends about Pixar movies, play a game of telephone through a mouth stuffed with pizza, and have a relatively controlled pillow fight in the final few minutes before pick-up proved how far Felix has come in his social and psychological development.

My son’s hypersensitivity and social anxiety, traits that many quiet children exhibit, have been part of his personality since day one. As a baby, he never wanted to detach from me and my wife even while sleeping; this continued into his toddler years and beyond. From those earliest days tottering around the playground in diapers to a daddy-son dance class to a part-time preschool program, Felix faced challenges socializing with his peers and participating in group activities without becoming agitated. Normally a highly verbal child, in situations like these, he ended up retreating into a nonverbal frenetic state, expressing himself physically and sometimes hurting others.

We were fortunate enough to be able to survive on my wife’s income with only supplemental money from my freelance work, and we decided as a family that I would stay home with him every day rather than try more preschool programs. So when Felix was three, he and I retreated into our own world, avoiding classes, playdates, and outings altogether. But when he turned four, my wife and I felt the time had come to try school once more. It again didn’t go well.

On the advice of his teachers, we sought a professional behavioral assessment. It revealed that Felix was very bright and creative as well as full of anxieties and special sensory needs—but not to the extent of receiving a clinical diagnosis. As parents, we often label our kids in order to quickly communicate a thumbnail of our experience with other moms and dads. “She’s a picky eater,” we might say. Or simply, “terrible twos.” Felix’s emotional development resisted such classification. His issues were clearly not the norm, but we didn’t have an easy answer for why he acted the way he did. We struggled to communicate to family and friends just what was going on because he didn’t fit into any category. This was tough on everyone.

Now, at seven, he’s a very different kid. He connects with other children over toys and books such as Harry Potter. He participates in organized games of tag and is comfortable enough to crack jokes and play pretend. He can function in a classroom. In fact, he’s quite popular among the adults in his school—even those who don’t work with him directly greet him by name and with warm smiles. In part, his transformation has come about with age and maturity, but it’s also the result of a deep, intentional effort on the part of many grown-ups in his life to help him understand his sensitive introvert nature and control the anxieties he experiences in day-to-day life.

Here’s what we did to effect positive change:

My wife and I sought professional help and found a school that supported him.

Following his assessment in Pre-K, we advocated with the Department of Education (DOE) for a special education teacher to join Felix for several hours every week. Later, in kindergarten, Felix had two teachers. One was certified in special ed, and the other worked with Felix one on one to help him navigate interactions with his peers. His helper also took him on walks and did recharging exercises with him when Felix became overstimulated or needed a release from his seat.

In addition, Felix saw an occupational therapist twice a week to work on self-soothing activities such as meditative breathing and stretching. Plus, he belonged to a peer group of other boys, whom he met once a week for discussions about feelings and behavior. Learning about himself and how his behavior affects others has been a core part of his education for three years now.

Living in our part of New York City makes us very lucky: DOE provides resources for students like Felix (although you must know to ask for them). Everything, from the assessment facility to the DOE offices to a good school, is within walking distance of our apartment. My ability to make midday meetings, and even the fact that I pick him up from school each day, makes it easy to communicate with the school staff and administration. We have built a partnership with the school, and we always feel seen and heard.

I recognize that a lot of our advocacy has been effective because of the privilege granted to a two-parent, hetero-normative, educated white family. Even the fact that Felix’s primary caregiver is male may work to his advantage in the system. So a combination of factors are at play here: we’ve been proactive in seeking help, but we’re also fortunate that our requests for assistance have mostly been met and that the school supports Felix as much as we do at home. I wish these resources and ability to advocate successfully were equitably available to all families with little boys like Felix.

We discussed feelings, a lot.

For children, one of the most challenging aspects of dealing with sadness, nervousness, fear, or anger is that they lack a vocabulary to communicate their emotions. They’re also not always able to determine exactly what they’re feeling, which makes the sensations that much bigger. My wife and I often talked about our interior states with Felix and tried as much as possible to use “I” instead of “you” statements. For example, we’d say, “I’m frustrated that I’ve had to tell you three times to clear the table for dinner.” When reading, we stopped to ask him what he thought the characters in the book were feeling and why. We modeled a vocabulary for describing the invisible world of thoughts and emotions.

Again, we also sought outside help for this. Felix saw a play therapist every week, who engaged Felix in games designed to strengthen his empathy, help him control his nervousness, and communicate what’s on his mind. On our fridge hangs a figure that Felix colored, mapping his feelings to his body. Anger, for example, lives in his hands. Fear in his throat. Excitement in his belly. This helped him understand the mind-body connection and enabled him to put words to what was going on inside of him instead of expressing it physically.

I developed a support system for myself too.

For the past two years, I’ve seen a therapist a couple of times a month, one who has experience working with kids like Felix. He advised me on parenting strategies and helped me deal with frustrations in my relationship with my son. He also provided encouragement whenever I felt despondent about Felix’s slow and atypical development. My wife and I are both open to mental health treatment, and I’m grateful we’ve supported each other in this regard.

I took less expensive steps as well, relying on friends, some with kids and some without, with whom I had one-on-ones about my parenting worries, hopes, and accomplishments. But I also sometimes needed to not talk about any of this and instead be an adult who wasn’t defined by parenthood.

In addition, I’ve tried as much as possible to keep exercise a part of my life. My support network has lightened (and enlightened) me, which has been important for me as well as for Felix. I need to be calm in order for him to be calm; if I’m my best self, I can encourage him to be his best self too.

I modeled how to accept and rebound from social anxieties.

I shared stories with him of when I was a child and experienced social and performance anxiety, so he knew that he was not alone—I’ve faced similar challenges and gotten a handle on them. I put them into the present tense too, describing a part of me that still feels nervous going to parties or being on stage but also letting him know that it doesn’t prevent me from doing, and eventually enjoying, those things.

For example, every week when we walk up the steps to his swim class, Felix tells me how his stomach bubbles with trepidation. I tell him how I used to feel the same way before swimming too. We remember how he always has fun once he’s in the water, and that after that first plunge, he’ll feel better. One day, he wants to feel as relaxed in the water as I do, and I remind him that he will. It’s become part of our routine before swimming, one from which he seems to draw strength.

We never stopped loving, being positive, and celebrating every small achievement.

This has been the hardest and most important aspect of our relationship with Felix. I tried never to say things like “what is wrong with you?” or compare my son to other children. Instead, I focused on what a wonderful, compassionate, and fun-loving little light of joy he is and tried to nurture that spark. We reviewed situations that didn’t go as either of us would have liked—times when he lost his temper with a friend or became so clingy that he unintentionally hurt me or his mom—and imagined aloud what other actions could have been taken or words said which might have produced a different, more positive outcome. “Now you know for next time,” I’d tell him.

This isn’t to imply that I didn’t sometimes express displeasure at his decisions or feel disappointed when I witnessed his nervousness get the better of him. I did, and I do. But I tried to keep in my mind—and his—the fact that we are temporal creatures, growing over time. “Look how far you’ve come,” I’d tell him. “You’re going to keep changing your whole life. That’s what life is: we’re always moving and learning new things about the world and ourselves in it.”

I believe this with all my heart. Even just a year ago, Felix wouldn’t have been able to successfully navigate a birthday party with his peers. He wouldn’t even have known whom to invite, his concept of friendship was still so nascent. Today, he’s thriving socially, in part by mastering his anxiety and in part by just going with it, knowing that nervousness isn’t a permanent condition or necessarily a negative one. This gives me strength and hope too as I continue to learn about my own nature by nurturing his.

And so, even though it was his birthday, I feel like my little boy is the one who’s given me a gift: the gift of providing him the parenting I wish I’d had as a sensitive, quiet child. In the process of helping him become a more confident, capable, and compassionate social being, I’m becoming a better one myself.

15, 30, 50, 70… Which SPF Should I Use?

By GalTime.com

Seems like you need a PhD in SPF these days to understand what’s on the label of most sunscreens. And believe you me, you want to make sure you have the right sunscreen slathered on your body before you hit the beach!

Non-melanoma skin cancer is now the most common type of cancer in America. More than 3.5 million cases are reported annually… and that’s just the reported cases. Many patients are treated in the doctor’s office and a good number of those aren’t included in the count. That’s why the Archives of Dermatology recently called non-melanoma skin cancer an “under-recognized epidemic” in the U.S.

Of course, the number one way to prevent skin cancer is to stay out of the sun (especially during peak sun hours) or cover yourself from head to toe even in 90 degree weather! But how many people can do that? Enter sunscreen. The right kind not only blocks dangerous rays, but also helps block the anti-aging effects of the sun (think fewer wrinkles!). But, it’s critical to use the right level of protection.

There are products on the shelves with SPFs ranging from zero to 70 now-a-days. Do you have any idea what the numbers really mean?

How much more protection does a 30 SPF offer than a 15? If you guessed twice as much, you’re wrong. An SPF of 15 screens 93 percent of UVB rays, while a 30 screens 97 — just four percent more. “UVB protection does not increase proportionally with the SPF number,” says Dr. Elizabeth Hale of the Skin Cancer Foundation. There’s a large jump between an SPF of 2, which protects against 50 percent of UVB rays, and 15, but after that the increments are small.

Leading dermatologists say a 15 should do the trick day-to-day for most people.

“This would be for casual wear, you’re going to and from your car, you’re putting out the garbage, you’re picking up the kids at the bus stop, says Dr. Zoe Draelos. If you’re going to be outside for a prolonged period of time, experts recommend an SPF 30 minimum. You’ve also got to use the right amount of sunscreen or else the effective SPF might be far less than what’s on the bottle.

How much sunscreen should you use?

You’ve probably heard people say use an amount the size of a quarter. Wrong! You’re supposed to use a shot glass full of sunscreen on all exposed areas to get the full benefit.

And here’s something else you probably don’t know. SPF only refers to UVB rays. There is no ratings scale for UVA protection. So look for the words “Broad Spectrum” on the label and specific ingredients according to “The most important is avobenzone and two other ingredients titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.”

If you’re sensitive to the sun, are taking medications that make you more sensitive to the sun or have had skin cancer in the past, dermatologist recommend you use an SPF 50.

Another tip: Don’t forget the UV-blocking sunglasses!

How To Collaborate Like Todd Snyder, Rising King Of American Menswear

He’s the once and future king of American menswear. But unless you’re obsessed with Instagram’s growing brotherhood of style bloggers who wear his clothes, you might not know Todd Snyder’s name today ― a fact that he’s OK with (for now) and he’ll be the first to admit that he’s not an American household name … yet.

But after designing outerwear at Polo Ralph Lauren, working as the director of menswear at The Gap and then as senior vice president of menswear at J.Crew (where he launched the Ludlow suit and its NYC-destination menswear shop The Liquor Store), he left J.Crew to launch his eponymous label. Snyder has been “The Next Big Thing” for so long that it feels like Snyder (a Dutch surname that, as it happens, means “tailor”) is finally getting the respect, attention and success that he deserves.

In 2012, Snyder, who cites military, Savile Row and classic American style as big inspiration, was GQ’s Best New Designer in America. A year later, he was a finalist for the Council of Fashion Designers of America/Vogue Fashion Fund. Last year, American Eagle announced (to some surprise) that it had acquired the Todd Snyder label, as well as Snyder’s lesser-known brand, Tailgate, for $ 11 million.

He told HuffPost that he plans to open a Todd Snyder shop in Manhattan (his first brick and mortar in the US) that will feature, among other things, a barber shop, tailor shop and bar, in the hopes of bringing the success he’s found in his Japanese locations to his home base in the U.S.

A big reason for all of this success, though slow-simmering, is due to his ability to recognize partnerships where others would see competition. Snyder has designed product with brands that share both aesthetics and customers: PF Flyers, Champion, Superior bags, Moscot and Cole Haan. His most recent collaboration with Timex sold out within its first day.

We spoke with Snyder in his Manhattan studio to learn about why he collaborates so much when he could just do for himself what other brands are doing, to learn his secrets.

Associate Yourself With Those Who Inspire You.

“What attracted me to Timex was the heritage,” Snyder said. “When I think of iconic American brands, it’s Levis, Champion, Timex, Redwing. Those are the things that, to me are like OK, that says they’ve stood the test of time. They’re still doing today what they were doing when they started, which is making really great quality design.”

Your Competitor Can Become Your Mentor.

“It’s also the ability to sit across from [a brand like] Timex, where within the entire company, there’s a lot of really smart people. They’re talking about marketing and different ways of getting the word out and I’m like, how do you do that? They deal with mega companies, the Targets of the world. Everybody. To be able to sit across from people in that company who have this knowledge is, for me, so exciting because then I learn from that.”

Respect Your Partner’s History. It’s Why You Want To Work With Them.

“To be able to work with companies like those is a dream come true, but my approach is to go in with respect to the heritage and what they’ve built,” Snyder said. “I don’t want to change it, I just want to add a little twist to it and really pay tribute to it, as opposed to starting over. Because to me, that’s not what it’s about ― it’s about taking something they’ve done and adding slight twists to it so it kind of makes it my own, but at the same time doesn’t destroy what they’ve started. And having that appreciation goes a long way so they can trust me. It’s a trust factor.”

Know That Ultimately, What You Make Together Is More Meaningful Than The Sum Of Its Parts.

I don’t think I could ever make a watch better than Timex, and if I did I don’t think it would have as much meaning as something like this,” Snyder said. “Because that’s what people appreciate; you fall in love with the design and you might not know that it was made originally in 1970 but you start to read the backstory on the watch and how it was started and the story about how it was designed, and you fall in love with that story as well. And I think that’s what guys really appreciate. There’s more substance to it rather than just a piece of metal that’s on your wrist.”

Florida Zika Case Could Be First Local Transmission In U.S.

(Reuters) – Florida health officials said on Tuesday they are investigating a case of Zika virus infection that does not appear to have stemmed from travel to another region with an outbreak.

The statement from the Florida Department of Health did not specify whether the Zika case was believed to have been transmitted via mosquito bite, sexual contact or other means.

The department said the case was reported in Miami-Dade County and that it is working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on an epidemiological study.

The department also reiterated guidance to Florida residents on protecting themselves from mosquitoes that may carry the virus.

“Zika prevention kits and repellant will be available for pickup … and distributed in the area under investigation,” the health department said in a statement. “Mosquito control has already conducted reduction and prevention activities in the area of investigation.”

Zika, which can cause a rare birth defect and other neurological conditions, has spread rapidly through the Americas. A small number of cases of Zika transmitted between sexual partners have also been documented.

There has yet to be a case of local transmission by mosquitoes in the continental United States, though more than 1,300 people in the country have reported infections after traveling to a Zika outbreak area.

U.S. officials have predicted local outbreaks to begin as the weather warms, particularly in southern states such as Florida and Texas.

What’s a Freedom-Loving American to do in November?

The coming presidential election could cause a liberty lover to commit ritual seppuku. A left-wing corporatist and friend of influence-peddlers will face off against an unprincipled populist who supports big government and carries protectionist and anti-immigration banners.

The usual of gaggle of third parties are running with no hope of victory. Anti-Trump Republicans concocted but abandoned a plot to run an unknown apparatchik as an independent in hopes of either winning or at least preventing anyone else from winning the 270 necessary electoral votes, tossing the election into the House of Representatives. Who would control the latter body after such a race, and who would such a body choose as chief executive, were matters of conjecture.

Whew!

Thousands of years ago the Bible warned people against putting their hope in princes. That remains true today.

Indeed, almost as soon as the Constitution was ratified politicians ignored their oaths and broke the nation’s fundamental law when convenient to do so. The Alien and Sedition Acts, passed during John Adams’ presidency, would have done Hugo Chavez or Vladimir Putin proud.

In succeeding years men of principle vied with shameless opportunists to set U.S. policy. The twin tragedies of slavery, which conflicted so greatly with America’s founding principles, and civil war, in which the central government killed promiscuously to hold people in political bondage (rather than to achieve the far more appealing objective of freeing the bondsmen), effectively destroyed the original Constitution.

By the end of the 19th century, neither major political party could be trusted to protect liberty. Grover Cleveland, a Democrat, was one of the last liberals to be president. There was little, if any, difference between such “Progressives” as Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, both friends of Leviathan. If Calvin Coolidge offered a step back toward more limited government, Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt soon launched a series of grand national crusades.

Since then there has been sporadic but largely ineffective resistance to the ever-aggrandizing state, by Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan, for instance. However, Lyndon Johnson and Barack Obama both pushed dramatic increases in the welfare state. Republicans often have been as willing as Democrats to spend and regulate. Richard Nixon and George W. Bush were particularly enthusiastic advocates of expanded government.

Maybe 2016 will offer a worse choice than usual, but maybe not. What to say of Michael Dukakis and Bill Clinton vs. George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole vs. Bill Clinton, Al Gore and John Kerry vs. George W. Bush, and John McCain and Mitt Romney vs. Barack Obama? Which of these candidates was dedicated to protecting individual liberty and limiting state power? None of them.

Moreover, America has survived worse from politicians across the spectrum. Abraham Lincoln sacrificed the Constitution (and hundreds of thousands of lives) to prevent people from choosing a new political union. Teddy Roosevelt and his great rival Woodrow Wilson disdained even the idea of constitutional limits. Franklin Delano Roosevelt expanded on the defeated Herbert Hoover’s interventionist economic program, threatening the market economy he claimed to save.

Relying on the inflated Democratic congressional majority Lyndon Johnson carried on a policy of guns and butter while launching the misnamed “Great Society.” Richard Nixon converted to Keynesianism and expanded the regulatory state. Since then government has continued to grow inexorably under Republicans and Democrats alike.

Of course, some presidents and Congresses have proved to be better or worse than others. Sometimes it might make sense to support the lesser of evils. Nevertheless, past experience suggests that America wouldn’t look that much different with Chris Christie or Marco Rubio as president than Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump. Without question government would be bigger, spending would be higher, regulations would be more extensive, additional wars would be fought, and people’s liberties would be further restricted. The details would differ, but government would shed more limits and individual freedom would suffer more abridgements. The country would be headed down the same path. Only the speed of descent would differ.

Which means the various schemes promoted by anti-Trump activists, even if successful, would not have made that much long-term difference for liberty. What independent politician could win states from both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump? Probably someone better at promising more benefits than one interested in protecting individual liberty.

Who would congressmen, having approved big budgets and passed big programs, choose as the next president if the issue ended up in the House? Partisan loyalty, not commitment to liberty, would determine the outcome. Who would get the nod is not clear. But we can be sure that Rand Paul, Justin Amash, or another similarly-minded freedom advocate would not end up in the White House.

Lest reality seem unduly bleak, it’s important to remember what American liberty has survived: brutal political division and legal repression during the republic’s early years, invasion of the U.S. by Great Britain, decades of slavery undermining free institutions, a horrid civil war and consequent centralization of power in Washington, Progressive takeover of liberal politics, aggressive redistributionist campaigns in the name of the New Deal and Great Society, and multiple wars feeding an ever-more powerful Leviathan. Compared to these the prospect of a Clinton, Sanders, or Trump presidency doesn’t look quite so hopeless.

It oft has been said that eternal vigilance is necessary to safeguard our liberties. That remains the case today. Irrespective of who wins in November, those who love liberty must continue to act as sentinels for freedom. Upon them the future of the republic will depend.

ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

How We Can Come Together When Our World Is Falling Apart

2016-07-18-1468850246-141222-BWWD30SFX0.jpg

Here we are, a week later with more images of terror and broken bodies and weeping after Friday’s attack in Nice. And just as I was about to publish this post yesterday, I learned about the policemen shot in Baton Rouge. Then shortly after, the protests in Cleveland.

It seems we must decide for ourselves if we will become who the media says we are becoming. Or if we won’t. If we will prove them wrong and become something new up and out of all these ashes.

I want to be a new. Do you?

But it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It doesn’t happen when we’re huddled up on ” a side” or hiding for fear of it all. It happens in relationship. We’ve got to come together when the world seems to be falling apart.

That’s a pleasant thing to say and a harder thing to do. Not because we don’t want to, but mostly because we don’t know how. Sure we can cling to those who are like us and those who agree with us. But what about those who think, act, and look differently than we do?

How do we come together for real, rather than just throwing words around?

Last week, I wrote about how we must humble ourselves and listen to one another. But what does that look like in action?

First, it looks like being honest about our own brokenness. Admitting our fears and hang-ups. Opening the hatch on the junk we tend to keep locked in the trunk.

The first step is being humble and admitting to ourselves and to God,

I am broken too. I do things that hurt others and hurt myself. I cannot point to the specks in other people’s eyes until I acknowledge and ask for help removing the 2×4’s in my own.

Because the 2×4’s in our own eyes are often the things blurring and skewing our vision. They keep us from seeing clearly what is really going on in the lives of others.

Second, it looks like getting to know the 2×4’s in our own eyes.

We tend to think of our enemies as outside of us, but the most dangerous one can hide within. The 2×4’s in our own eyes are often set with a strong sense of pride, which makes them hard to see.

We can all use help finding these any day of the week. So, try this…

Consider these statements not only for the inciters and perpetrators of hate and terror, but also for people in your community, your neighborhood, your office, and even your home.

  • He/she does/says ____________, and I would never…
  • He/she is absolutely wrong about _________ because…
  • He/she will is never willing to see my side of_______________.
  • He/she doesn’t deserve my respect because ______________.

Am I saying there are not absolutes in this world when it comes to moral conditions?

Not at all.

But I am saying that judgment is to come not from us but from Elsewhere. And it’s not made based on appearance or what we think we see, it’s evaluated by what’s in a heart.  And you and I can’t see what’s in a heart, what experiences make a heart beat the way it does.

So third, we must admit we may not have the whole story.

That there is absolutely more to the other person than meets the eye.

And fourth, we need to learn something about him or her.

We need to lay our 2×4’s down, so we can make eye contact, really see the person with an open mind. Whether the person is warm to our effort or not, we won’t be offended (because remember, we are operating without 2×4’s). We can simply say, “I’m sorry we’re in this spot. How can we figure this out together?” Then, listen.

This is where healing starts in our families, our neighborhoods, and our nation. With acknowledgement of our own brokenness and 2×4’s… then the healing words, “Let’s help each other.”

Because we are exponentially more together than we can ever be apart.

If we really want to do something about the mess we’re in, then we can apply this process to one person who rubs us wrong this week.

Shall we do it together?

If you are struggling with anxiety and fear in the midst of all this upheaval, here is a free guided meditation for you.

22 Pieces Of Advice For First-Time Solo Travelers

After six solo adventures, I’ve learned the ins-and-outs about what it’s like to go off on your own. Here are a few bits of wisdom I picked up along the way.

Mindset Preparation

1. Forget everything you’ve heard or read.

There’s no right or wrong way to solo travel. Do whatever you want, without worry about what other people expect you to be doing. If you want to sleep, sleep. If you don’t want to see that cultural monument, don’t. No one, even someone with solo travel experience, can tell you how this trip is going to go. Each person’s solo adventures are experienced uniquely to that person. So before you go, try really hard to clear out all the stories you’ve read and heard.

2. Be truthful about your needs.

It’s okay to not know what you’re getting yourself into. There are so many things that are and aren’t going to happen on this trip that you could never expect. But you should also be truthful about the things you do want and need. If you want to meet new people, then you can plan your trip in a way that caters to that. If you want to sleep a little more comfortably, spend the extra money and make it happen.

3. Know that you can reach out to loved ones if you need.

This doesn’t make you weak and doesn’t have to take away from your trip. If you are in a moment of fear or loneliness, send that text or make that call. As long as you’re being honest with yourself about the journey of the trip, there’s nothing you can do that will make it less yours.

4. Don’t have everything planned.

Leave some room for spontaneity and unforeseeable adventures.

5. Be prepared to be vulnerable…

…and hyper self-aware of your awkwardness and insecurities. This is not meant to scare you, but being alone in a new place and meeting new people can be terrifying. But remember, there’s a reason you want to do this, and there’s also an internal knowing that you can do this if you’re going through with it.

Practical Tips

6. Always keep more cash on you than you think you’ll need.

And never keep it in the same place. You won’t have someone with you to spot you, or someone to rely on bailing you out. You never know when you’ll need to convert more money, when cash is the only payment type accepted or if you’ll lose your credit cards.

7. Email a copy of your passport, flight itineraries and lodging confirmation to yourself and a loved one.

You never know when you might need it.

8. Carry around important phone numbers and addresses.

These include the hotel or hostel you’re staying at, your credit card’s international number and the local U.S. embassy.

9. Get in touch with your hotel or hostel before you leave.

They may have free shuttles and great tips for transportation to and from the airport.

10. Don’t pack more than you can carry yourself.

You are responsible for your belongings from the minute you land to the minute you’re back on the return flight. You’re going to want to be able to comfortably carry your luggage, whether it’s walking up three flights of stairs in a hostel or taking public transportation to and from the airport. Plus, you never know if you’re going to spontaneously want to hop on a train to a neighboring city for a night.

11. Go for practical over cute.

You’re not going to need several pairs of shoes; always pack comfortable walking/adventure shoes. Pack light, because you’ll likely repeat outfits (and depending on the length of your trip, you can do laundry while traveling). Choose a practical day-pack with zippers and pockets so you can store everything safely over a nice purse or bag. And pack travel-sized, must-need toiletries so you can throw them out or leave them there.

12. Ziploc bags are your friends.

For your toiletries; for saving stubs and tickets; for securing your phone when you randomly go hiking in the rain.

13. Pack a lock.

Just do it.

14. Bring a deck of cards and a good book.

Cards are a great way to break the ice with other travelers. A good book is great company at cafes, solo meals and on a bench with a spectacular view.

Making The Most Of Your Trip

15. Keep a journal.

Journaling is a great way to jot down adventures, but it’s also a good for exploring feelings and thoughts of loneliness, awkwardness and fear. At the very least, always journal on the flight to your trip, and on the flight back home. It’s incredible to see the difference in your mindset.

16. Look into local walking tours and hostel events.

Walking tours are a free and fun way to see the city and meet people. Most hostels host events like community dinners and pub crawls so travelers can meet each other, and a lot of them also have community boards with other travelers looking for company on random day trips.

17. Wander aimlessly.

Wandering without any time restraints is a wonderful way to see things you didn’t find on forums or in guidebooks.

18. And if you get lost, keep roaming.

As long as you’re safe, if you feel a pang of being lost, keep roaming. There have been many times where I could have stopped, paralyzed with fear that I wouldn’t find my way, but as I kept roaming things started to look familiar or I’d meet someone willing to help me.

19. Remember: People are inherently kind.

Talking to strangers can be a scary feat, but take that deck of cards and talk to that group of travelers. Hang out in common spaces in the hostel. Make eye contact, smile and be aware of how you’re presenting your friendliness. Initiate conversations when you have the slightest desire to do so. Go to that social event by yourself. In all my experiences of solo traveling, and in general of talking to strangers (something I’ve gotten good at), people are likely to be kind back to you, nine-out-of-10 times.

20. Talk to locals.

I can’t stress this enough. Even if it’s the guy who works at the grocery store as you’re buying a bottle of water, ask locals for must-see spots and eats. They’ll give you tips you wouldn’t have been able to know of on your own. And ask locals about their stories ― how long have they been living here? How has the city changed after X event happened? You’ll directly learn so much about the history and culture of a place by talking to the people who live there.

21. Embrace the awkwardness and loneliness.

Don’t fight them off and don’t be upset when they (and they will) overwhelm you. They are critical and uncomfortable aspects of traveling alone, but they will teach you so much about yourself.

22. Trust yourself.

You are equipped with everything you need ― strength, intuition, a sense of adventure ― to make this trip everything it should be for you.

He’s Not A White Knight — He’s A Human Being

Society says:

Men are not allowed to be weak.

Men do not feel as deeply as women.

Men do not have emotional attachments to sex.

Men are fearless and courageous.

Men are here to save the day, the damsel and the world!

Today I am throwing my hands up in the air and saying e-nough!

With thoughts and stigmas like this, relationships are doomed before they even start.
It’s time we put an end to the emotional imprisonment of men.

Unless we stop seeing our men through a distorted lens, we will always feel disappointed and as if he’s not enough.

Ladies, he’s not a White Knight, he’s a human being. He’s not perfect; he’s flawed. Just as we are.

As much as the big screen likes to repeatedly demonstrate the amazing, enlightened, self-aware man rescuing the damsel at just the perfect moment, it’s a rare occurrence in real life.

For Pete’s sake, Ladies, we have to stop this nonsensical belief once and for all.

Gender Differences – Real or Not Real

There are very few gender lines I allow into my beliefs and the ones I do are mostly hormone or physiologically based. There are many books out there claiming males and females are very different and we must understand one another in order to get along.

I am publicly willing to stand in disagreement with this for many reasons. (But that’s for another blog)

At the core level, the absolute deepest level of our being, we are souls. Souls that are a magnificent balance of masculine and feminine energies. Souls that came here to experience a physical body and the material world. At our very core, we are Spirit in human form.

All of us.

We may have chosen to experience the form of male or female, but our purpose for being here is the same. We are no different from one another. We are here to learn and grow closer to our Higher Self (God-Self) while existing in human form.

When we understand we are dealing with another soul housed in a male body, we can acquire a deeper understanding and appreciation for our partner that has the capacity to heal our fractured relationships.

Giving What You Are Expecting

I absolutely believe if we lose the White Knight stigma we’ve attached to our men and start looking at them from a new perspective, relationships en masse would dramatically improve!

2016-07-18-1468874361-2893789-whiteknight.PNG

Although I cannot speak to all relationships as there are too many individual and unique dynamics in play, I believe those of you who were drawn to this article possess the ability to alter the state of your partnerships by viewing your man through a clearer lens.

You can start by asking yourself this question:

Am I giving to my man what I am expecting from him?

If I’ve seen it once, I’ve seen it a hundred times. Women expecting to be nurtured, supported, caressed, complimented, made passionate love to (and the list goes on), but they’re unwilling to do those things for their man.

Somewhere along the way they chose to believe it’s the man’s job, not theirs.

By putting such lopsided expectations are on our men, we create an atmosphere of perpetual lack and resentment.

Frankly, you are putting the entire relationship in the hands of your partner and by golly, that’s an incredible burden for anyone to bear!

Ladies, he can show up for you. He can hold your hand. He can love you and respect you, but you have an equally important role in the relationship’s success.

No one person can nurture the relationship alone. Happy, healthy relationships require both parties equally contributing to the healing and becoming of their partner.

What He’s Not Saying

In my past, I had the belief that the man was supposed to fill the cracks of my broken heart. That my heart was the only fragile one in the room and the right man would know exactly how to make me feel safe and loved.

I was left disappointed every time until one day I looked deeper into the eyes and soul of the person I was putting my expectations on.

I discovered he was just as afraid as I was and his heart equally as fragile.

My entire life changed when I began to view men from a different perspective.

I started to see what the men in my life were not saying rather than what they were saying. I saw their fears and I heard their inaudible cries for love. I didn’t tell them what I saw, I simply began approaching interactions with them differently – with love rather than expectation.

The responses that came were remarkable. Softness replaced hardness. Kindness replaced anger. Gratitude replaced bitterness. Appreciation replaced expectation.

It was a miracle.

Your man needs your love, attention, support, understanding and encouragement as much as you need it from him. He has his own store of false beliefs and fears just as you do. He is not exempt from the human experience just because he sports a penis.

Most men won’t display their needs openly as they have been taught not to.

It’s up to us to know that as human beings men experience the same emotions, fears and weaknesses as women do. If we want to experience the wonders of a reciprocally loving relationship, we need to step up and do our part.

And with this beautiful shift in perception, you will become the person he’s always needed in his life – his soft place to fall. You will become his trusted companion, the one who knows and understands him like no other.

You will be the reason he becomes all that he is meant to be and the reason he will protect his kingdom at all costs.

He will become the White Knight you’ve always dreamed about simply because you love him for all that he is.

Putting Pulses at the Heart of Africa’s Agribusiness Boom

Africa’s food and beverage market has the potential to reach $ 1 trillion by 2030. Exploding urban populations across the African continent are demanding access to varied, processed foods. This is creating a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs in the food industry.

Yet these entrepreneurs have a responsibility to ensure that the new food products that feed Africa’s future mega-cities are both affordable and nutritious. Sub-Saharan Africa is still home to an estimated 217 million undernourished people, according to the FAO. In Swaziland, 25 per cent of children under 5 years are stunted. Research has shown that malnutrition has an adverse effect on the child’s educational development, ultimately affecting the country’s economic growth.

The fight against this malnutrition epidemic is one issue behind 2016 being declared the International Year of Pulses. Members of the pulse family, such as beans, chickpeas and lentils, have tremendous nutritional value. Beans, for example, which are a major staple crop in many African countries, are high in protein, iron, zinc and other minerals.

The most common way to consume beans in Africa is to boil them. In Swaziland, the most widely eaten bean based dishes are bean stew and umgcushu. If new, more exciting ways to eat beans were developed, I believe their consumption could be increased. This would have a domino effect on the health and nutrition levels of our communities. That is why I entered the LovePulses Product Showcase, a global competition to discover the most innovative recipes featuring pulses as their core ingredient. I developed a recipe for Bean Jam – a sweet and smooth spread that is full of key nutrients. Unlike traditional jam, my product has two full cups of beans in one jar, giving a much-needed injection of protein and minerals to those who eat it.

One of the most exciting prospects of my Bean Jam is that its main ingredient can be sourced locally, as beans are a second most widely grown crop after maize in Swaziland. The vast majority of our 1.2 million strong population relies on farming. By developing food products that use raw ingredients grown in our own region, we are creating a ready market for these farmers, especially in the poorest regions of the country. This has the potential to increase their income, therefore bringing poverty levels in the region down.

Food entrepreneurs are going to need much support, if our potential to catalyse change for our fellow citizens is to be met. Access to finance to invest in equipment, as well as access to electricity and better technology are key areas for investment. In Swaziland, a bean based processing plant for development of a sustainable bean value chain would be greatly beneficial for women, smallholder farmers and the youth. It would contribute to food security, job creation and improved nutritional status of the population.

Young people in particular, have much to gain from a boom in food processing job and market opportunities. Jobs in product development, processing and marketing could be a lucrative way for Africa’s millions of youth to get involved in the food sector, without having to work on the farm. Many young Africans are discouraged from getting into agribusiness, due to the many risks and hard labour. Yet the high levels of unemployment among young people could be brought down if they were inspired to get involved in these off-farm opportunities in the agribusiness sector.

This will require significant investment in training for women and young people in this area, so they may become accomplished in areas such as business development and marketing.

This week, I will take Bean Jam to the Institute of Food Technologists Expo in Chicago, to showcase it to potential investors and retailers. I hope my success can inspire a new generation of food entrepreneurs in Africa.

Watch this space. More recipes are coming!
