Mexican Officials Rejoice In Trump’s Debate Defeat

Donald Trump has made a political career off of insulting Mexico, portraying Mexican immigrants as drug-peddling rapists and vowing to build a wall on the U.S. border to keep them out. So it’s no surprise that when the GOP nominee bombed during the first presidential debate, Mexican leaders rejoiced in his defeat.

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox called Trump “a danger” and questioned why he still hasn’t released his tax returns.

Felipe Calderón, another former Mexican president, noted that a CNN poll taken after the debate showed that most people thought Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton won the night. Calderón also retweeted this post from Clinton’s official Twitter account:

Though Trump has repeatedly insisted that Mexico will pay for his imaginary wall, officials have insisted that the country will do no such thing.

“Mexico will never pay for a wall,” said Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, who met with Trump at the end of August.

If you missed the debate, catch up with The Huffington Post’s coverage. The tl;dr version: Trump lost his cool, told countless lies and bragged about not paying taxes and profiting off of the housing crisis. Better luck next time, Don.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Bethlehem’s Enduring Bach Festival: GPS For The Soul

If you need to destress from the noise of the national debate, consider how the Bethlehem Bach Festival has helped communities come together to find calm, peace and prayer for more than 100 years.

2016-09-26-1474905909-5545014-Festival2016GregFUnfgeldCharlotteMattax.jpg

It was in 1900 that the two-year old Bach Choir of Bethlehem gave the first performance in North America of Bach’s greatest choral work, his Mass in B Minor. With only a few exceptions, the Choir has performed the Mass every year since. Their voices, nearly one hundred strong, cannot have been more fervent, nor more inspired by community spirit, than they were earlier this year at Packer Memorial Church, on the campus of Lehigh University, May 13 and 14. it was the first weekend of the 109th Bethlehem Bach Festival, and the house was packed.

Led by by Greg Funfgeld, artistic director and conductor since 1983, the Bethlehem Bach Festival’s two performances each year of its signature work, the Mass in B Minor, represent a link with the America of Andy Hardy. It was a time when classical music, and the arts in general, aspired to provide guidance and energy to communities nationwide; in the case of Bethlehem, it was according to the University’s holistic motto, “Homo Minister et Interpres Naturae,” which translates loosely to “Woman and Man, servants and interpreters of nature.”

2016-09-26-1474905863-9379570-Festival2016crowdoutsidePackerChurch.jpg The performance was one of integrity, movement, passion and weight. The effortless virtuosity and stylistic homogeneity of the combined forces in the chapel’s stone sanctity, allowed Bach’s music to sing out with infectious, exhilarating enthusiasm. Agnes Zsigovics, Rosa Lamoreaux, Daniel Taylor, Benjamin Butterfield, William Sharp and Daniel Lichti were outstanding soloists. The Choir was large, warm and flexible.

With a collaborative interpretive approach based on the latest scholarly research, kept honest by the great Bach biographer Christoph Wolff in the front row, Funfgeld focused on creating a compelling flow in which the emotional weight of each section was directed upwards, as if the music were being offered to Bach’s God. The rolling out of the massive, six-part fugue in the “Sanctus” was the most perfect single demonstration of how Funfgeld’s combined forces combined the intimate and the infinite. And beyond the music, there was a different authenticity from listening in an audience which, as I came to know, heard — as Bach intended in his humility — the prayers for consolation and peace inseparably from the music itself.

If you were not there, you can hear the same deep intensity of music making on the Festival’s recording from 1998. Bethlehem may no longer have Bethlehem Steel, but it has in the cultural fuel of its Bethlehem Bach Festival a generous helping of GPS for the soul.

2016-09-26-1474905935-9362483-Festival2016BachChoraleSing.jpg There was more to the two-day musical feast than just the B Minor Mass. On Friday afternoon, Dr. Wolff gave a stimulating lecture, and the first of two public, Bach chorale sing-alongs ensued. Friday evening, it was an exuberant, feel good concert of Bach’s gloriously optimistic Cantata No. 100, the Second Brandenburg Concerto with the brilliant trumpet soloist Terry Everson, and the procession of gorgeous delights known as the Easter Oratorio.

On Saturday morning, at the University’s Zoellner Arts Center just down the block, the Taylor 2 unit of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, with the Festival Orchestra in the pit, charmed the audience, who charmed them back with their encouragement and eager applause, in a series of joyful, inventive responses to and illuminations of music by Handel and Bach.

Then at last, after a brisk walk and a healthy lunch, the B Minor Mass of Johann Sebastian Bach, Part One, began at 2:30; Part Two began at 4:30. Then out into the night for a recreation on the Moravian College campus of the Cafe Zimmermann in Leipzig, where Bach and his fellow musicians and townspeople spent many pleasant evenings, quenching their thirsts in both music and coffee. It was thirsty work being Bach.

The Bethlehem Bach Festival’s endurance has enabled the Bach Choir of Bethlehem to give 31 concerts and educational programs year-round, reaching an audience of more than 20,000. The Choir will conclude its season December 10 and 11 with Christmas concerts in Bethlehem and Allentown, and probably snow on the ground and sleigh bells ringing in the air.

A Referendum on the American Voter-An Independent’s View

With the 1st presidential debate hours away, this election has become a referendum on the American voter!

What, I have it all wrong you say; it is about whether we want Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump to be our president. And voting for Gary Johnson is a wasted vote since neither he, nor Green Party candidate, Dr. Jill Stein, will ever win; they are place card holders for their constituencies. Why waste your vote on them?

In order to properly frame what I mean about this election being a referendum on the American voter, perhaps using a analogy would be helpful.

You are a hiring partner of a business, small or big; rural or urban; local, statewide, national or international. Your business has placed an ad or hired a recruiter to look for the most qualified candidate to fill the leadership position of your entity. The most qualified is typically defined by one having critical experience, knowledge and background together with a measure of personality to fit into the culture of the organization, certainly with those that are the underlings running key parts of the business. After all, the hiring partner knows the business is in operation to serve its customer base but keeping in mind the bottom line in order to make a profit and that paychecks won’t bounce.

Besides a resume or a Curriculum Vitae, your HR department asks for recommendations from candidates that become finalists, contacting those they list for this purpose; maybe some folks the candidates do not list.

The position comes down to two candidates, “A” and “B”. “A” has considerable experience, background and experience; “B” hardly any. There are questions about both that focus on transparency and trust, though its been reported, with verification, that “B” has a reputation for disparaging various groups of peoples, minorities included, within his past business associations. “B’s prior business practices have also, shall we say, a shadiness to them. “B” has also been asked to produce critical documents typically required for the position, but refuses to do so. “A” also has some issues relating to openness and candor. Further HR research uncovers that “B” and the companies he has worked for have been involved in many lawsuits. He has a personality that suggests what he says and does all the time is right and what everyone else says or does is wrong.

You know that picking the wrong candidate as the head of your company could well have disastrous consequences for the business, even bankruptcy, and certainly the jobs and paychecks for all of the workers.

The factors for deciding whether “A” and “B” would be selected could fill a volume, but I think you get where I am going with this hypothetical job posting. “A” = HRC; “B” = Trump. In the private business sector, there would not even be a doubt that Clinton would be selected for the job.

So why are millions of Americans willing to vote for Trump to be their next president when, if in the private sector, his background, lack of knowledge, and experience would be totally insufficient. And this is not even taking into account being commander-in-chief? Why, then, are millions of Americans willing to gamble their household paychecks, domestic goods and services that have risen in the last eight years, and fortifying their country’s presence on the international stage when Trump otherwise has shown his incompetency in all respects? Why would millions of Americans gamble on him when his tract record with various voting blocks is abysmal? Why would millions of Americans vote for Trump when fact-checking organizations rate him a liar 70+% of the time? To his credit, what he has going for him is being a showman, a carnival barker, a reality TV “star”—but this background should never qualify anyone of this ilk to be president of the United States.

Even the run-up to the debate tonight has become farcical, as if he has turned it into a reality TV show with the American voter that is supporting him his audience. No presidential election campaign in recent memory has ever been turned into the “show” Trump has created by his mere presence, a Piñata for all. Is he counting on a voter that doesn’t think through what he says or checks facts to see if he is truthful? Yup!

Given the Trump spectacle versus the seriousness about which Clinton is proceeding on the various domestic and international issues facing American voters; given the shallowness of Trump’s abilities to lead against Clinton’s knowledge, depth of experience and background with the issues and interaction over the last four decades with the “players” (heads of state) in the game, it all comes down to the heart versus the mind of the voter that will decide who wins come the morning of November 9. Trump may capture the hearts of Americans with his bombast, his insults, his racism and bigotry and certainly, to repeat once more, the depth of his knowledge that is as deep as the surface of any body of water. After all, we have been told that he talks what certain voters have silently thought for so long—-the “Archie Bunker” view of the country in “All in the Family” that depicted a blue collar family in Queens, NY of the 1960s. Of course, there were also the views of “Meathead”, Archie’s son-in-law played by Rob Reiner, who challenged his father-in-law’s viewpoints with facts and what his mind told him was the right thing to do. To be certain, none of us should want to go back to the future (remember those Michael J. Fox flicks?)

Regardless that Trump is trying to take the American voter back 50+ years, let’s return to the job posting. Do you want your company’s profits for the next four years led by bluster, bluff and lies? Do you want your weekly or monthly paycheck dependent on someone that, from all indications of past performance, swindles and cheats others for personal gain? Do you want a bigot and racist leading the way? Can you count on such a person hiring you? If you are skeptical, or your answers are “no”, then why would you want that same-type person leading your country as president? Lead with your mind, not your heart; otherwise, this election becomes a referendum on you, the American voter…and that is never good.

The 11 Struggles Of Hypersensitive Individuals

Here’s the cycle.

Person A does something person B doesn’t like.

Person B gets hurt and calls them out on it.

Person A gets mad at Person B.

It happens to me over and over and over again. It’s gotten to the point where I just expect it, like the people sitting in the splash zone at Sea World.

And then as I sat down to think about it, there’s a lot of struggles that us overly sensitive people go through. It’s not just one thing–it’s a multitude of them. So, in the name of self-therapy through writing, I’m going to list every single one of them.

1. We’re Always The Bad Guy, Even Though We Shouldn’t Be

I’m going to write that again. We’re always the bad guy, even though we shouldn’t be. When somebody hurts us, we tell them about it. Then after we tell them, they feel like we’re the ones attacking THEM, when we’re simply telling them what hurt us. People, it’s really not that hard to avoid being a complete Cotton-Headed Ninnymuggins to somebody. Shout out to Will Ferrel.

2. We Expect People To Be Somewhat Honorable

Many times when conflict arises and I know without a shadow of a doubt that I’m not wrong, I decide to just let things sit until an apology presents itself from the other party. Yeah, about 95 percent of the time that doesn’t happen. Our problem is we expect people to have at least a single shred of dignity and simply say two words that would make things better. Guys, being sensitive goes both ways. We get hurt, but all we need is a freaking apology and we’re better. We don’t need gifts and dinners and vases full of flowers.

And I also want to say that the ball isn’t always in our court. We need to express to the other party that something is wrong. That’s our duty to others.

3. Things End Up Blown Way Out Of Proportion

Because of our sensitivity, and because of the other party’s hard-headedness, things get blown way out of proportion. Things escalate because two simple words couldn’t be said. One person couldn’t humble themselves and say a simple apology.

4. We Can’t Fix It

In case anyone was wondering, we can’t fix this. For the most part, we’re very thoughtful individuals who expect much of ourselves and not much from others. But when somebody pushes our buttons, and we have a few, something must happen. It’s nothing that we can fix. We can try to improve at communicating that we’re hurt instead of internalizing it, but that’s it. We are who we are.

5. People Get Fed Up With Us Easily

It gets to the point with certain people where it’s like the boy who cried wolf syndrome. They get really annoyed that things keep going wrong, even when they should know by now what makes us tick. At one point you have to start wondering whether a relationship between the two of you is even healthy. Not all people are meant to get into a relationship with or be friends with somebody who is sensitive.

6. We’re Left Hurting Extremely Badly

When we do call people out on something, often times they just don’t apologize. Sometimes they even try to make it worse. This is the hardest part of it all because somebody we like or love is deliberately trying to hurt us more. Nothing is worse to a sensitive person than deliberate insensitivity.

7. Most Times We End Up Saying Sorry

Trust me, we hate conflict. We hate conflict as much as we hate getting our feelings hurt. So to bypass conflict we end up saying sorry simply to make things normal again. This isn’t a healthy way to take care of the situation at all.

8. Some Times We’re Serious And Cut People Off

Sometimes we are serious and end up cutting people off for good. And no, it wasn’t all just because of a dumb little text or a dumb little side comment–it was because the other person didn’t have the humility to simply take two seconds to say sorry. Literally all we want is an apology. When we’re hurt that bad, we remember it.

9. People Simply Don’t Learn

After a few months of knowing someone, you kind of understand what makes them tick and what doesn’t make them tick. For those who are friends with sensitive people, you should be able to understand that we have a few land mines embedded in the soil of our personality, but if you simply avoid doing just one or two things, life with us is going to be absolute gravy.

10. We Sound Over-Emotional

I’m sure you got that just from reading this post. The truth is that we’re amazing friends to have. We’ll put in more effort than anyone else and we’ll also be much more thoughtful than anyone else. It goes both ways. You get the insane highs with the lows. And the fact is that you won’t even get the lows that much if you simply stop doing the two or three things that we don’t like!

11. It’s Hard To Find Someone That Gets It

I have a few friends that get it. They understand that sometimes jokes need to be kept to a minimum, and that I have my stressful days every now and then. I hardly fight with these kinds of people. For the most part we have awesome times together with little to no conflict at all, while on the other hand I could have multiple conflicts a day with somebody else.

Again, it all depends on the personality of the people around us, and whether they even care about the sensitivity of other people.

What You Can Learn From Talking To A 90-Year Old

2016-09-25-1474825017-4549814-L1010393.jpg
Pretty good shape for 90 – must be those G&Ts

Last week we celebrated my father-in-law’s 90th birthday.

There was a time when even getting to 90 was a major achievement, and if someone were lucky enough to make it to 90, they were generally frail, wheelchair bound and barely aware of the celebration going on around them.

I remember when my great grandmother hit 90. She was in a nursing home, bent over, in a wheelchair. She barely knew where she was, or who she was. That was some time ago.

For my father-in-law, Ken Pattenden, nothing could be further from the truth. The man still stands a lean and wiry six foot plus (as I am only 5’6″, I find this alone intimidating), has a full head of hair, a crushing handshake, an athlete’s build and more than all his marbles. I suppose it’s a tribute to genetics and clean living.

In any event, to celebrate the event, we all gathered in one of those massive old English country houses (did I mention that he lives in the UK?), and gathered the family for a weekend long party.

Ken was born in 1926, (you don’t have to be a math major to have figured that one out), one year before Charles Lindbergh became the first person to fly across the Atlantic. Lindbergh’s flight took 33½ hours in a tiny, one-seater, single engine plane made of wood and cloth, lacking even a front window. It was hailed as the ‘wonder of the world’.

Our trans-Atlantic flight took about 6 hours. We slept most of the way in the reclining beds and we watched a movie. They also served us two meals. Lindbergh brought along some sandwiches.

The world has changed a lot since 1927, when Lindbergh made his historic flight. Sometimes, we lose sight of that.

This remarkable transformation, all of it, took place within my father-in-law’s lifetime.

At dinner, I asked Ken about his experiences in the Second World War. He served in the British navy, assigned to Alexandria, in Egypt. At that time, Britain was still the British Empire and Britain ruled one-quarter of the world’s surface and also ruled one-quarter of the world’s population. Today, they are down to a few islands, and maybe Scotland, if they stay lucky.

But, prior to the war and signing up with the Navy, Ken had grown up and lived in London. This was during the Blitz, the German bombing of the city, and he recounted that as well – walking past houses that had been simply blown to oblivion overnight, and never knowing when or if you were going to get hit.

As we chatted, his wife of 60 plus years, Anne, who was sitting next to him also joined in.

She recalled that as a child in a small English village, they had no running water. Her mother had to go to the well in the center of the village and fill jugs each day. They had no central heating – all of the heat, and the cooking, was provided by an open fire. They had no indoor plumbing, but rather an outhouse behind the house. And no electricity, at least in the earliest days. They had no refrigerator, but instead an ice box that would, when it was available, be stocked with a block of ice to keep food cool.

She remembered the first car in the village, the first phone. She went on to become a head teacher. Ken became an accountant.

The transitions in the course of their lives, from the time they were born until the present is, well, mind-boggling. The changes they have seen and personally experienced represent a transformation so massive that, frankly, personal computers and iPhones (he is quite good with his), which we think of as major are, in fact, minor events.

When Ken and Anne were born, the world was, in many ways, far closer to what it had been for more than 500 years in the past, maybe a thousand. Most transport was done by animal power or walking. Agriculture was largely driven by animal power as well. Modern medicine was virtually unknown. You could die of a simple infection. Penicillin only came into public use in 1942! Last year Ken had laser cataract surgery and a few years before, an artificial replacement knee.

Automobiles, airplanes, telephones, refrigeration, running water, central heating, electricity, modern medicine, television, radio – the changes that their one lifetime has encompassed was probably the greatest transformation that any generation has ever seen, or for that matter, is ever likely to see.

We like to complain that ‘things are bad’. This is particularly true in this election cycle. Things are terrible. Things have never been worse.

What we are lacking is a sense of history.

Talk to a 90 year old the next chance you get. I think you will see that things are not quite so bad after all.

Redditors Hilariously Reimagine Michelle Obama’s Hug With George W. Bush

It was inevitable.

Michelle Obama hugged George W. Bush at the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington on Saturday, and people on the internet immediately went into overdrive.

Redditors used former chief White House photographer David Hume Kennerly’s heartwarming picture of the First Lady embracing her husband’s predecessor to engage in a good old Photoshop battle.

They amusingly reimagined Bush as a sleeping baby and an actual bush ― while presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton also made an appearance.

Vital Lessons Learned From The Chelsea Bombing From A Chelsea Psychologist

The following post was created for Self-Therapy Month at Techealthiest. This is Part One.

When frightening events like the Chelsea bombing and the additional planting of nine other bombs from New Jersey to New York occur, we have no choice but to create a mental file in which to place our thoughts, feelings and images associated with the attack.

It has to be stored in your memory one way or another.

Those of us who live or work in New York City have been more directly affected by this nerve-shaking attack, but its explosive effects are, without a doubt, far-reaching, as news, commentary and images have been repeatedly catapulted from the media toward our eyes and ears, which essentially forces us to make sense of what happened.

At worst, you’ve been vicariously traumatized by the bombing (or directly traumatized if you were on 23rd Street that Saturday night). The more common reaction among is to be shaken and disturbed in the days following the bombing, followed by a few weeks of talking about the bombing with your social and work circles.

Social media essentially guarantees that you’ll have to grapple with disturbing thoughts about the attack, but for how long will  these thoughts linger in your mind?

This leads me to the question I’ve been pondering since the event occurred: What is considered a “healthy” way to reflect upon the Chelsea bombing way after the event, as well other terror attacks that have occurred (and God forbid might happen again)?

Here are four things to be remembered about the attack that will promote health and personal responsibility.

1) Use the memory of this event to remind you of all that you currently have, most notably things that money can’t buy.

You actually are rich because you have everything you need right now. Dare to be more thankful than you’ve been of late. Let the memory of the terror attack spark a feeling of gratitude toward the people in life who are invested in your happiness AND the people who don’t seem invested in your happiness.

It’s just too easy to lose touch with what matters most. Life can change in a split second. Don’t forget that but it’s not healthy to think about this idea all of the time because it can turn to anxiety if it becomes an obsession.  See this horrible event as a beautiful opportunity to be reminded of all that you have, especially your freedom, friends, health, family or whatever matters most to you.

2) Think twice…three times…a thousand times about the consequences of spreading hatred before you utter a single word.

There are two hugely important points here. First, on a personal level, when you spread hatred, you’re killing the cells in your body. You lose. A part of you dies. The spread of word venom is an artificial way to expand your ego by diminishing others. It certainly makes you depressed and it pushes people away from you, except for people who either are as angry as you are or whose lives are devoid of meaning and are looking for something to believe in.

Second, the expression of hatred on the web can cause real harm to people. There are people out there who feed off of hatred. Keep in mind that social media creates a thunderclap that spreads like wildfire through the web. For people who feel powerless, this is a place to gain a synthetic sense of power. Hatred on social media spreads like cancer, and makes everyone sick.

Please know that if you’re constantly ranting on Facebook about Trump or Clinton or any person or group with whom you have a major problem, most of your “friends” are viewing you as crazy. They probably contemplated defriending you, but they’re either lazy or they don’t want to have to randomly face your scariness in the supermarket or at your next high school reunion. Instead, they’ve subtly unfollowed you and connected your current venomous behavior to a past memory of you being something negative. Please know that I’m referring to the expression of hatred, not anger, the latter of which can often be healthy and productive to express.

3) The collective American attention span is shrinking at an alarming rate.

The speed at which information travels makes us more likely to be satiated at a faster rate. In other words, you’ve probably been bombarded by news of the bombing so much that you eventually either tune it out completely or you go numb when you hear about it. The danger here is that you’re likely to miss the value inherent in remembering what happened and what could have been.

How do you counter a natural tendency for your emotional reactions toward the Chelsea bombing to become watered down as a result of social media satiation? At minimum, make a reminder to mention the bombing at your next major family, religious or other gathering. Talk about the event in terms of how it affected you and what you now feel thankful for. Another strategy is to find a way to express your thoughts and feelings about the event though a creative modality that you repeat even months after the disturbing event. For example, if you dabble in acrylic art, create a series of paintings over time which serve as an expression of your inner experience of the incident.

4) Crowdsourcing is a weapon against terror.

Yes, social media (and the media in general) spread hatred, false beliefs and dangerous calls to action faster than the world as ever known. How little it takes for an individual to incite violence on the web is scary, but various forms media can also (obviously) be used to spread good and inform people of important developments. Case in point: the capture of Ahmad Khan Rahimi, the Chelsea bomber. Harry Bains had been watching CNN, which allowed him to recognize Rahimi who was sleeping next to Bain’s bar in Linden, New Jersey. This is loosely an example of how crowdsourcing can aid in spreading valuable information to combat terror.

Who knows what the next incident will be? Use the internet as a way to inform people if something suspicious is happening in front of you. You have the loudest megaphone ever created in the form of Twitter and Facebook.

There’s much more to say here, but it’s time to digest and return to this topic soon. This essentially reflects the optimal strategy. Ponder the horrible events that occurred. Learn from it. Vow to appreciate life more at least in the short term. Move on but return to it at a later date. Just don’t forget.

Stay tuned for Part Two of my lessons learned from the Chelsea bombing.

Integrator Alert: Demand Time (and Changes) in the FDA’s Move Limiting Access and Increasing Costs of Dietary Supplements

Removal of many dietary supplements from the market. Increased prices for patients and consumers. Limited access to key nutritional tools for practitioners who have used them safely for decades.

Charges like these against a proposal of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have propelled many Paul Revere rides through the alternative and integrative medicine community. One wonders with blasts against the FDA if it is “wolf” that is being cried.

2016-09-24-1474737510-3070699-FDA213X110.gif

Best assessment: not this time. I received an urgent email from long-time Integrator adviser Michael Levin of Health Business Strategies. Levin’s executive roles over the past 4 decades have included positions with pharma companies, medical device firms, as well as supplements firms. He’s a level headed analyst. He pointed to a perspective of the Council for Responsible Nutrition:

“Collectively the draft FDA Guidance can be viewed as a variety of maneuvers by the FDA to re-characterize as many dietary supplements as possible as [New Dietary Ingredients] and then propose a standard of proof for their safety that few manufacturers would be able to meet; one that Congress and the courts clearly did not intend to be applied to dietary supplements.”

Urge the FDA to add a 120 day extension to the comment period

At issue is Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376: “Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry.” The present comment period ends October 11. Levin urges all organizations with a stake in the industry to make their voices heard.

The first step: request a 120 day extension to allow a regulation of this importance to be thoroughly vetted. A draft letter of request is affixed below.

2016-09-24-1474753206-6563239-CRNJointHeader120611400x105.jpg

CRN wasn’t acting alone. It signed a joint statement with the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the Natural Products Association (NPA), and the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA). The group of organizations called for “an overhaul” of the guidance. Best estimates are that compliance will cost the industry $ 2-billion to $ 6-billion a year. These costs that will be passed through to patients and consumers.

Levin is realistic about the challenges the guidance poses for anyone not intimately involved with manufacturing and sourcing processes. He warns that “this highly technical regulatory guidance document is very complex.” One example: if the guidance were adopted, a manufacturing change will trigger new dietary ingredient (NDI) status which, due to routine manufacturing processes, “essentially will put most botanical extracts into NDI territory.” If so, this would add substantially to regulatory burden, and cost.

For these reasons Levin, pictured below, “encourage(s) all practitioner-stakeholders to request a 120 day extension on the comment period (now due on 10/11/16) to allow a careful review.” In his view, “medical doctors, pharmacists, naturopathic doctors and other healthcare practitioners should review this guidance and consider how it may impact their ability to prescribe safe nutritional interventions to help their patients.”

2016-09-24-1474754646-3300244-levinmichael2015.jpg

Levin urges all who are affiliated with professional organizations or institutions linked in any way to supplement use to respond – and also send copies of their letters to US Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Maria Cantwell (D-WA)

If guaranteeing safety is the FDA’s primary concern, attacking the dietary supplement manufacturing is roughly like the IRS seeking to balance the budget by auditing people who make under $ 50,000 a year. With a significant percent of the estimated 251,000 medical deaths a year linked to pharmaceutical use, maybe a better use of the FDA’s team on this project would be to set them to mining in a deeper vein of public harm than to making more expensive the agents people are using instead of pharmaceuticals.

Bottom line: Levin’s call for an extension makes sense. No need for the FDA to rush on this one. Get your request for an extension and comments in!

Sample Letter Requesting a 120 Day Extension

Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376 – Request for 120 Day Extension for Comment Period (“Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry”)

The revised draft guidance for New Dietary Ingredients (NDIs)

Re: Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376 – Request for 120 Day Extension for Comment Period (“Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry”)

This is to respectfully request a 120 Day extension for comment period on this draft guidance.

As written, the guidance raises very serious questions about the future availability of safe dietary supplements recommended by healthcare practitioners to help patients maintain and improve their health.

Physicians, doctors and pharmacists use nutrient repletion and targeted nutritional interventions to improve the health status of the patients we serve. In so doing, our patients can live healthier lives. Evidence also exists that these nutritional interventions may reduce healthcare costs, safely.

Since this guidance is highly technical and appears to have a high likelihood of impacting the practice of nutritional medicine, we simply need more time to study, understand and consider how this guidance might impact our ability to help the patients we serve. The issues of manufacturing changes, ODIs vs NDIs, the position on synthetic botanicals, the cost of redundancy of NDINs and how that might impact innovation, product availability, consumer prices and ingredient availability are some of the issues that need careful exploration. Products on formularies will need to be reviewed to determine how this guidance, if adopted, would impact their availability.

Please extend the comment period by (at least) 120 days (to February 11, 2017) so that we may evaluate the impact this important guidance may have on public health and safety, in general, and the patients we serve, in particular.

Thank you.

Sincerely

Barack Obama Advises His 2009 Self In Hilarious Jimmy Fallon Clip

If you had the chance, what advice would you give to your younger self?

Jimmy Fallon has hilariously imagined what the President Barack Obama of today would say to himself when he first entered the White House in 2009.

And POTUS’ biggest tip? Well, apparently it’s all about the hand sanitizer.

With the election so close, President Obama’s time in office is winding down,” Fallon said on “The Tonight Show” on Friday.

“Of course, Obama has changed a lot during his Presidency,” the comedian added, before playing the amusing spliced and diced interview between the “duo.”

Check out the fun in the clip above.

My Stepmom Died And That’s Not Okay

I’ve been having some health problems.

In order to resolve them, I did what any good adult would do: I went to the doctor. It turns out, I’m stressed. I’m stressed in the kind of way that makes your eye twitch for no apparent reason and makes you cry when you drop your fork on the ground (it had one last bite of broccoli on it, okay?).

My doctor asked me about my life and what I have experienced in the last year. I droned on about my engagement (yay!), moving to a new city, planning a wedding, financial troubles, health problems, and the passing of my stepmother.

“You said your mother-in-law died?”

“No, my stepmom.”

“Oh. I was about to say…that is awful! Not that losing your stepmother isn’t awful, but…”

My stepmom passed away seven months ago. This is not the first time I have experienced a less-than-sympathetic reaction. This is not the first time I have had to stifle my tears and reciprocate a stranger’s words with a forced smile. Our society has an innate bias towards the word stepmother.

I blame Cinderella. Thanks, Disney.

I have to be honest here: we bickered a lot. She was stubborn. I was stubborn. We fought, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love her. It doesn’t mean that it hurt any less when my father called me on that otherwise beautiful Thursday morning and told me she was gone. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t have to dig deeper than I ever thought possible, to find strength I didn’t know I had, to organize a funeral and finalize all of the details so my dad didn’t have to.

I haven’t fully mourned her loss yet. I don’t know if I have it in me to. She has been in my life since I was a tiny human running around with my blanket and sucking my thumb. With my wedding less than two months away, it’s finally starting to hit me that she wont be present. There are certain things that have always meant more to me when she would say them. Hearing her tell me that I’m beautiful has always been one of them. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because you expect your biological parents to tell you you’re beautiful. Maybe it means something different when it comes from a “step.” Knowing that I wont hear those words from her on that day stings. It stings the way a stranger’s words sting when they assume I’m fine because I only lost a stepparent. I was only her stepdaughter.

The loss of a stepparent is confusing. Sometimes I feel guilty. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t be allowed to feel sad because she wasn’t actually my mom. Sometimes I feel like I’m betraying my actual mom by feeling sad.

And, what may be the worst of all feelings, sometimes I feel like I don’t get to feel sad because at times we simply didn’t get along.

I know I’m not the only one who has experienced (or is experiencing) something similar. I know I’m not the only stepchild who has experienced this kind of a loss. I want to change the narrative. I want people to understand the complex range of emotions that can accompany the death of a stepparent when both biological parents are still very active in a child’s (or adult’s) life.

I am blessed. I have an amazing mom and I have a phenomenal dad. I also have a kick-ass stepfather whom I love dearly. Just because I have all of these things, that doesn’t mean that my stepmother’s death should be diluted. I am not deserving of less time to grieve or less time to process what happened simply because my bio parents are amazing.

What I am deserving of is a little bit of compassion.

It has been seven months.

And I think I have finally started to grieve.

This post is part of Common Grief, a Healthy Living editorial initiative. Grief is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t make navigating it any easier. The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. So we started Common Grief to help learn from each other. Let’s talk about living with loss. If you have a story you’d like to share, email us at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

‘Love Hormone’ Oxytocin May Enhance Feelings Of Spirituality

The same hormone that helps mothers bond with their newborns may also enhance feelings of spirituality, a new study suggests.

It’s been called the “love hormone” and the “cuddle chemical,” but doctors and scientists know it as oxytocin, a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland during times of love and bonding.

A recent study spearheaded by Duke University social psychologist Patty Van Cappellen found that participants who received doses of oxytocin reported a greater sense of spirituality than those who received a placebo.

“Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs,” Van Cappellen said in a statement.

For research purposes, the study defined spirituality as a sense of connection to a higher power or to the world that gives meaning to people’s lives.

Eighty-three men between the ages of 35 to 64 participated in the study. Each participant received either a dose of oxytocin or a placebo, administered through a nasal spray.

Researchers found that those who received oxytocin were more likely to report feeling that spirituality was important in their lives and that life has meaning and purpose. They were also more likely to give higher ratings to statements like, “All life is interconnected” and “There is a higher plane of consciousness or spirituality that binds all people.”

Participants also listened to a guided meditation, after which those who received oxytocin reported experiencing more positive emotions like awe, gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest, love and serenity than those who received a placebo.

The study’s results held true regardless of whether the participant reported belonging to an organized religion or not, and they remained consistent a week after the hormone and placebo were administered.

Van Cappellen noted that the results of the study could only be applied to men given that the research subjects were all males. Oxytocin produces slightly different results in men and women, she said, and thus further studies should investigate the hormone’s role on women’s spirituality.

Even among men, the effect might not be uniform. The study also showed that oxytocin has a stronger spiritual effect on people with a particular variant of the CD38 gene, which regulates the release of oxytocin from hypothalamic neurons in the brain.

“Spirituality is complex and affected by many factors,” Van Cappellen said. “However, oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe.”

But Van Cappellen isn’t alone in her findings. Previous studies have shown oxytocin to have a profound impact on spirituality, as well as generosity, altruism, and empathy. Oxytocin has also been shown to play a role in experiences of spiritual transformation.

But it has a dark side, too.

A 2010 study of Dutch males out of the University of Amsterdam found that male subjects who received a dose of oxytocin were more likely to express ethnocentric prejudice and xenophobia than those who received a placebo.

Luckily, spirituality isn’t bound by hormones alone. It’s how we choose to define our spirituality ― whether as a connection to all creation on our global home or loyalty only to those who look, act and believe as we do ― that makes all the difference.

Powerful New Clinton Ad Nails The Impact Of Trump’s Vile Behavior

Hillary Clinton’s campaign is here to show you what a Donald Trump presidency would feel like for young women.

The Democratic nominee’s latest ad, titled “Mirrors,” shows girls of varying ages and backgrounds looking at their reflections as they hear multiple comments from Trump degrading women.

“Donald Trump has spent his campaign, and career, demeaning and insulting women, which is just one of the reasons a majority of American women do not think Trump respects women,” Clinton’s campaign said in a statement.

The spot ends with a sobering question: “Is this the president we want for our daughters?”

Watch the full ad in the video above.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Money, Millennials, And Finding Happiness: My Talk With The Iconic Deepak Chopra

2016-09-21-1474495479-2144486-TonyTriumphandDeepakChopra.JPG
Deepak Chopra and Tony Triumph at the Harper’s Bazaar x Brunello Cucinelli event in Soho, NY.

Neatly tucked into an oasis of calm beyond the usual madness of New York Fashion Week, speaking 1-on-1 with Deepak Chopra was the cornerstone of common sense, sensibility, and gratitude needed for my brain to recondition.

As I joined Harper’s Bazaar and Brunello Cucinelli’s Soho Flagship for an intimate cocktail event and panel conversation, I was welcomed by clean beachy hues and a lush, luminous atmosphere. Arriving a little late, I Instantly felt safe and alleviated from the pressures of my day, and of course, my journey through rush hour traffic getting downtown. There was a hidden somber to the room. “The Deepak effect,” I thought.

Exclusive to friends of Deepak Chopra and Brunello Cucinelli VIPs, the room comfortably held about 60 of us. As the epochal Deepak Chopra perched a white seated lounge, along with Brunello Cucinelli President, Massimo Caronna, Bazaar executive Fashion & Beauty Director, Avril Graham kicked off the conversation with highlights to Deepak’s latest book, Radical Beauty.

2016-09-21-1474497119-5209740-DeepakChopraHarpersBazaarBrunelloCucinelli001.jpg

Shifting into the atmosphere, my brain suddenly did a shuffle, organizing my thoughts and examining my experiences from this New York Fashion Week in order of importance. “You can evoke it right now. Just turn your attention to who’s doing the listening.” I heard Deepak say. Which I took as an ethereal response to my digression of the moment, but mostly to Graham’s first question, “What is Beauty?”

“If you feel a presence, it’s your being. Not your mind saying you should’ve gone to the bathroom before this presentation started.” Deepak continued, finessing a bit of laughter to the room.

“If you take this presence wherever you go you will radiate beauty. It is a presence- it’s not a thought, it’s not a feeling, it’s not an emotion, it’s not your physical body. Take your presence wherever you go and you will radiate beauty and light from the sun.”

2016-09-22-1474511973-87506-SS2_6524001.jpg

As each guest sat and soaked in Deepak’s ideologies, the room whirled silent more times than I could count, each of us pondering in those famous ‘Ah-ha’ moments that we always hear Oprah speak about. Occasionally chiming in, Massimo Caronna offered us his wisdom and insight on the overall structure of the Brunello Cucinelli brand. Seemingly, no employee is allowed to be communicated with after the closing hours of 5:30pm, and as Brunello Cucinelli is the first person in, he is also the first person to leave at closing hours.

This conversation would remain intimate, open and candid, with Graham making reference to the annual Bazaar Icons party hosted on the previous Friday, Kanye West’s performance, and Deepak’s response that he’d in fact once taught meditation to Mr. West himself.

Brunello Cucinelli President Massimo Carrona, BAZAAR Executive Fashion & Beauty Editor Avril Graham, and Deepak Chopra joined forces for an intimate panel conversation at the Brunello Cucinelli flagship in SoHo, NY.

Yet before any panel discussions, and before Avril Graham took the mic and introduced Deepak to the intimate room of celebrities, VIPS, special invited guests, and thousands streaming live via social media, I was fortunate enough to get in my own set of questions with Deepak 1-on-1.

Chiming in on the topics of Money, Millennials, and Finding Happiness, tune-in below for my exclusive chat with the iconic Deepak Chopra:

Tony Triumph: As many of us desire health and wellness within Arts & Entertainment, what do you recommend for us to maintain our bliss, beauty, and balance?

Deepak Chopra: If you really feel centered all the time, if your body feels energetic and joyful, if your heart feels loving and compassionate, if your mind is restful, alert and quiet, and you are carefree, you can achieve anything. It doesn’t matter what.

Tony Triumph: How do you feel about millennials and the impact they have on society ?

Deepak Chopra: Overall I feel very encouraged by the millennials, because they have a lot of idealism, they have passion and they are wanting to change the world.

2016-09-22-1474519952-6868881-TonyTriumphinterviewingDeepakChopra.JPG

Tony Triumph: What are 5 key things that we can do to change our lives now?

Deepak Chopra: Get good sleep every night, manage your stress, cultivate healthy emotions- like love, compassion, joy, and peace of mind, move- if possible, do a little yoga and meditation, read, and eat food that nourishes your body and soul.

Tony Triumph: What is your business advice to millennials who are overwhelmed by their goals in this fast-changing world?

Deepak: I do believe in smart goals, so you should always stretch more than you think you can achieve. You should make sure everything is measurable, you should have a good team behind you that supports you, you should record your process, and you should set time limits.

An expert in the field of mind-body healing, Deepak Chopra, MD, FACP is a world-renowned speaker and author on the subject of alternative medicine. He is the author of more than 80 books translated in over 43 languages, including 22 New York Times bestsellers.

6 Expert-Approved Tips For Dating With Anxiety

When you suffer from an anxiety disorder, getting through a date can seem near impossible.

It may help to know you’re not alone. An estimated 18 percent of all American adults suffer from an anxiety disorder of some kind, ranging from social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder and general anxiety. There’s a good chance you’ve gone on a date with someone who’s had a panic attack over the thought of dinner and a movie.

There are ways to cope with anxiety, though, and meet someone worthwhile. Below, experts on anxiety share their best advice for managing your worries and stress so you can successfully get through a date.

One technique that is well-known in anxiety treatment is the idea of exposure: The more you deal with things that stress you out, the better equipped you are to handle them. If dating feels particularly nerve-racking, start slow by putting yourself in situations where you can practice small talk, said Keith Humphreys, a professor of psychiatry at Stanford University.

“Go to any social event ― a dance, a church picnic or a hangout after work ― and set a goal of talking to a stranger who seems interesting for at least 10 minutes, without the pressure to ask anyone out,” he told The Huffington Post. “Taking the scary thing ― a real date ― off the table will give you security to practice your dating and conversational skills until you get more comfortable.”

Pay attention to the stories you’re telling yourself in anticipation of the date, said Jennifer Rollin, a psychotherapist in North Potomac, Maryland. Just because you think you’ll spend the whole night stuttering out of nervousness and mispronouncing menu items doesn’t mean that’s necessarily going to happen.

“When you view your thoughts as ‘just stories,’ you can distance yourself from the ones that are unhelpful,” she said. “Let’s say that you are thinking ‘I’m going to come across as insecure’ or ‘If people knew about my anxiety, no one would want to date me.’ Rather then judging yourself for having these thoughts, simply notice them and then determine whether that train of thought is helpful or unhelpful.”

When a thought is unproductive, filter it out and try to replace it with something more optimistic, Rollin recommended.

“For example, you might tell yourself, ‘No matter how this date goes, I am proud of myself for facing my anxiety and putting myself out there.’”

Try to see a healthy dose of stress as your friend when you’re dating, said Kimber Shelton, a psychologist based in Duncanville, Texas. A bit of nervous energy can give you the focus and motivation to get through the date. The key is to keep the date short so you don’t feel trapped.

“When stress is first activated we think, ‘I feel nervous, but I can do this!’ ― but that thought can be be temporary and short-lived,” she explained.

To that end, Shelton recommends scheduling dates of a reasonable length and meeting up in a familiar place ― your favorite coffee shop, for instance, or a nearby restaurant where you’re well versed in the menu.

“You want to just slightly push yourself out of your comfort zone,” she said.

Everyone dreads awkward silence on dates but when you have anxiety, you may feel a heightened need to “be on” around new people. You often feel tongue-tied, making even even basic conversation difficult.

To combat this kind of performance anxiety, Manhattan psychologist Chloe Carmichael recommends storing up a few conversation starters beforehand.

“Read some news stories before your date and choose a handful of topics that might come in handy ― something about the arts, the weather, sports, local news and world events,” she said. “Besides filling up the awkward silences, this will connect you to your date because current events are relevant to pretty much everyone.”

In anticipation of a date, it’s easy to get caught up in how the other person might perceive you. But instead of worrying about where you stand, psychologist Stacey Rosenfeld suggests flipping the script: How will they stack up in your estimation?

“Shift your focus to whether or not this is a suitable person for you to date, said Rosenfeld, who’s based in Coral Gables, Florida. “Focus on what you have in common, their chemistry with you and whether or not you’d like to see this person again.”

She added: “This can take a lot of the pressure off the meeting because you realize you have an active role in this process, rather than passively waiting to be accepted or not. This strategy works great for job interviews, too!”

When the date is over, put it to bed. You may feel tempted to mentally replay the awkward moments or lulls in conversations but resist that urge, said Shannon Kolakowski, a psychologist and author of Single, Shy, and Looking for Love: A Dating Guide for the Shy and Socially Anxious.

“Rather than beat yourself up or focus on awkward moments, go through the date recalling fun moments and good conversation,” she said. “Did you both find yourself laughing or did your date compliment you, or vice versa?

If the date truly lacked any moments of connection, remind yourself it wasn’t your fault, Kolakowski said: “Sometimes people just don’t click, and that’s OK.”

Jew Am I?

2016-09-22-1474519476-6095897-ScreenShot20160921at9.44.03PM.png

Despite my unpronounceable surname, formidable Dukakis-level brow line and decidedly Jewtastic seasonal allergies, I’ve always considered myself a regular, average American. I’ve lived in America for all 50 of my 50 years, if we count Los Angeles as part of America. And some people do. On Friday nights, I solve Blue Bloods murders right alongside Tom Selleck’s mustache. On Saturday mornings, I’ll watch any college football game you place in front of me, even the traditional battle between the Devry Institute and Clown College. And on the 4th of July, I not only root for Joey Chestnutt in the Hot Dog Eating contest, but I’ll often eat along with him. You know, for moral support. I like my sitcoms with three cameras and my omelettes with three cheeses. I cried at Argo, Sully, Rudy and Miracle. I complain about traffic and Mondays and my back and gridlock in Washington. See? Regular. Average. American.

And then there are occasional days, when I still feel like a guest, trying to “pass”. But hey, what are you gonna do?

Not long ago, I was at the dentist when their hygienist asked if I was Persian. I answered “No, but that’s funny I do get that a lot. My grandparents were Sephardic. From Turkey.” Apparently, I had given the wrong answer. Apparently, I had given the most grievous answer known to man. Turns out my hygienist wasn’t Persian, but Armenian. And she spent the next ten minutes holding me a little too responsible for the Armenian Genocide, while never once removing her finger from my mouth. “I guess maybe there’s such a thing as a good Turk” she offered with all the resolute conviction of someone reading a ransom note with an off-camera Glock pointed at her head. She then made repeated references to “your people.” My grandparents moved here a hundred years ago. My people are from Encino. As I’ve been known to say, the only things they committed genocide against are pound cake and my self-esteem.

I can’t say I grew up in a super Jewish home. We were Reform. So reform that our temple had a swimming pool, hence it’s common appellation as the “shul with a pool.” I went to Nursery and Hebrew School there and had my bar mitzvah there, but we were mostly High Holiday kind of Jews. And even then, those services were frequently held in a Presbyterian Church. I did mention this was LA, didn’t I?

The other thing that muddled my Jewish identity was the fact that I was half-Sephardic (from Turkey) and half-Ashkenazi (from Poland and Austria). I always thought of my parents as just two Valley Jews. Their nearly matching tennis gear didn’t belie some cultural chasm to my ten year-old eye. But apparently, their union had been the Judeo equivalent of an inter-marriage. I never really considered that there was much difference between my grandparents. But looking back, one side, the Bel Air side, were close friends with Richard Nixon. On the other side, the Fairfax side, I had a grandmother so old country that she didn’t drive, pronounced Seattle as “Seatt-Lee” and wouldn’t buy me root beer because a kid shouldn’t drink alcohol. And a grandfather who, I swear, had at least 8 brothers named “Victor.”

I went to a public elementary school that was so Jewish, I didn’t even realize anyone there was Jewish. I just thought all guys were as bad as me at contact sports. And all girls had frizzy hair and topped out at 5’2.

My first real understanding that not everyone celebrated Shavuot, came when I entered my Episcopalian middle school. Some of the clues included boys with blond hair, Topsiders, restricted counry clubs, tee times and a group called the Sons of Hitler that drew swastikas on our lockers. I don’t believe they received course credit for their hard work. But they didn’t receive suspensions either. This was back in the day, when “kike” was tossed around as casually and without consequence as “fag.” And if you happened to be a sensitive Jew, you frequently received the daily double.

I always felt I was a guest at someone else’s school. But by the end of my six years, I started to have fun with it. I was tasked with doing the introductions at our annual debate banquet, where I shared the dais with our school priest and English headmaster. Neither looked particularly overjoyed when I began my comments with “seated on the bima tonight” and then introduced each member of the debate team by their synagogue affiliation. Except for the one Korean guy every debate team had. He, I said, was here representing Fromin’s Delicatessen.

2016-09-22-1474519803-4968074-ScreenShot20160921at9.49.22PM.png

In college in the Northeast, I definitely went through a phase where I did everything I could to pass. Not just as Gentile, but as Mayflower, old money Gentile. I had the Bean Bluchers and the Norwegian fisherman’s sweater and the shiksa girlfriend from Miss Porter’s. I played touch football with fraternity brothers overlooking the water in Newport while wearing an Oxford shirt. But this was always an ill-fitting costume. As they say, you can’t hide the hook. That’s my nose. That’s what the hook is referring to.
I even once tried dying my hair blond, using a homemade brew of lemon juice, Sun-In and peroxide. Instead of blond, I spent a summer with a bright orange mane looking like the evil spawn of Danny Bonaduce, Carrot Top and Bozo the Clown.

In reality, it’s hard to pass as a Jamestown colonist or a laconic Wyoming sheriff with the last name “Behar.” My wife and I used to joke that if our kids ever wanted to run for the Senate, they could drop the “Behar” and run as “Samantha Robins” or “Jack Andrews.” The latter could also save the State Department from an impending terrorist attack in a Michael Bay movie. Then again, this now feels like a concern from a bygone era. Things have changed so quickly in this country that no name feels more quintessentially American than “Barack Hussein Obama.”

As an adult, I’ve embraced my Jewishness if not a deep religiosity. Both my kids attend Jewish day school, yet I’ve never been to Israel. “But who’s watching my trees” I ask every time to repeated non-laughter. I call 1000 Island , “Russian dressing” and still see Woody Allen movies mostly out of cultural obligation. I know the V’ahavta by heart (or off-book as I call it). But then again, I still also know the Lord’s Prayer–the gift of Tuesday Episcopal chapel that keeps on giving.

We consider ourselves a typical American family. Our last big trip was to Charleston. Before that, we went to Austin. Super American, right? But then, after a week of eating our way through Texas and still in a brisket coma, I was pulled out of line at the Austin airport for questioning. For no discernible reason, beyond my swarthy complexion and swarthy outlook.

It’s possible I’m getting more Jewish as I age. Or the corollary, all old people seem Jewish. Last week, I smuggled a baggy of Trader Joe’s lox into my local bagel store so I wouldn’t have to pay full retail. When did I become everyone’s grandmother?

So what is the point of all this identity navel-gazing. Two thoughts come to mind. The first is about the Jewish-American experience. And how not everyone’s is the same. We’ve grown accustomed to seeing 20th century Jewry through the same herring-tinted filter. It’s always Ashknazi. It always runs through Brooklyn. And it always seems to be narrated by the same talking heads. We get it, Larry King liked egg creams, stickball and sneaking into Ebbets Field. But my experience has just as many bumuelas and biscochos as tongue sandwiches on rye. And my experience has already been supplanted by the new Jewish immigrant stories from Iran, South Africa, Russia and Israel.

My second observation is how I/we fit into the overall tapestry of American life. Every immigrant in every group always faces the give and take of full assimilation versus holding on to precious customs. There are days when I’m well aware that I am a Jew in a non-Jewish society. Try spending a day at Disneyland. (It’s also helpful if you want to feel anorexic). But on most days, I just blend in and don’t think about it–a proposition I’m well aware not all groups get to achieve with equal ease. But as I write this final paragraph in the Northridge Starbucks, the only non-Asian or Latino in the room, I see that we all just want to be thought of as American.

This Teen Is Almost 8 Feet Tall — And Still Growing

At 7 feet 8 inches, Broc Brown definitely sticks out in a crowd, and he’s only going to get bigger.

Brown’s family knew something was up at a young age: He was 5-foot-2 in kindergarten, according to his mother, Darci Elliot.

“When he got into middle school he was around 6 feet tall, and by high school he was 7 feet tall,” Elliot told Barcroft TV. “It’s a genetic disorder and there’s nothing that can stop him from growing – I don’t know if he will ever stop.”

Brown, 19, grows an astounding six inches a year because of a rare genetic disorder called Sotos syndrome, or cerebral gigantism. The condition reportedly affects 1 in 14,000 newborns, but the National Institutes of Health says the number may be closer to 1 in 5,000, since not everyone who has it is properly diagnosed.

Kids with the syndrome tend to grow quickly in younger years and have unusually large heads, but their adult height is often in the normal range. That makes Brown a rarity among rarities.

Other symptoms include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and an explosive temper.

Brown has both, his mother said.

“When he gets mad, he’s mad. It wouldn’t take him two seconds to pop a hole in the wall ― it could be very dangerous if he wasn’t on medication and able to be calmed,” Elliot told Barcroft TV. “But overall, he is a big softie, his heart is as big as his body.”

Brown is in constant pain because of other issues, including curvature of the spine and narrowing of the spinal cord. He was born with only one kidney, which means he can’t take painkillers.

“It kind of feels like a big tennis racket has gone through my back,” he told Barcroft.

Dr. John Pappas, director of NYU Clinical Genetic Services and associate professor of pediatrics at NYU Langone Medical Center, said there is no cure for Sotos syndrome and treatments address only the symptoms, not the cause.

“We don’t have a specific kind of medication that can control the overgrowth of protein,” Pappas told HuffPost.

Pappas, who hasn’t treated Brown, said factors beyond Sotos syndrome may be causing Brown’s non-stop growth.

The teen’s trajectory has been financially challenging for his family.

“There’s a lot of things that are hard, like finding shoes for him, finding clothes,” Elliot told local station WILX-TV in 2013. Nike helped by donating a pair of size 24 shoes.

Brown’s size has helped him reach a certain height of fame.

Previously, he held the Guinness World Record for tallest male under the age of 18. He outgrew that honor when he reached legal age. Kevin Bradford of Doral, Florida, who stands 7-feet-1, now holds that honor.

But if Brown continues to grow, he could soon be looking down at 8-foot-3 Sultan Kösen, the current owner of the tallest living person honor. Kösen stopped growing in 2012 at the tender age of 29.

Brown doesn’t seem concerned about being the world’s tallest man. He’d be happy with a normal, comfortable existence.

“I hopefully want to work for a sporting goods store or something like that, a cashier or something,” he said. “I just want to have my own job.”

Internet Racism is a Longstanding Feature of American Politics

By Jessie Daniels

Trump’s candidacy appears to have closed the gap between right-wing extremists like longtime Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke and the mainstream in a single campaign cycle. But as someone who has spent more than twenty years studying white supremacist rhetoric before and after the Internet, I view Trump’s rise differently. It is not new but rather a continuation of a trend that has been sped up and amplified by social media.

This trend involves people hijacking topics that are considered closed in mainstream society and opening them up to debate. Today, this debate happens on Twitter. It gains momentum when cable media feeds them back to the general public. This is why the sharing of a white-supremacist meme should not come as a surprise. It is hardly news.

In the early 1990s, I made copies of hundreds of publications from groups like David Duke’s National Association for the Advancement of White People and the Ku Klux Klan, which at the time meant travelling to an archive of printed newsletters at the Southern Poverty Law Center. What I copied back then was strange, but eerily familiar.

The language of these extremist groups was very similar to mainstream political talking points from the early 1990s. When placed side-by-side, David Duke’s call to value European American heritage did not sound that different from conservative political commentator Patrick Buchanan’s 1992 culture war speech. And it was not only the case on the political right, either. Bill Clinton’s vilification of hip-hop artist Sister Souljah shared the extremist view of African American women as particularly threatening to society.

At the same time, my students were also beginning to encounter white supremacist sites through search terms like “KKK” and even innocuous terms like “Martin Luther King.” These students were not being recruited, but something was happening that I wanted to study. By then, I didn’t need to go to an archive, I could just log on to the Internet, where I discovered a different kind of attack on civil rights. The website Martin Luther King dot org appears to be a tribute site, but it is actually a white supremacist site. It is intended to undermine hard-won civil rights victories by questioning Dr. King’s legacy.

This is a strategy shared by the white nationalist accounts that Mr. Trump is prone to retweet. Rather than simply shouting racial epithets, white nationalists would rather engage in a “reasoned debate” about ideas that are considered settled in polite society. Notions of the inherent criminality or lasciviousness of black people, or the innate avarice of Jewish people or their “control of the media,” are topics that could be debated, were it not for “political correctness” of Trump and his followers.

The innovation that Trump brings to white nationalism is to combine his persona from the “Apprentice,” edited to offer a facsimile of realness, with the unfiltered platform of Twitter. The cable news networks have augmented this by covering his tweets as if they are news, allowing him to be a call-in guest and featuring his campaigns events. Trump then leverages this media into political feelings. His gift is the ability to arouse a noxious farrago of emotions among white people, from white resentment and rage to the faux victimhood clustered in the phrase: “We cannot afford to be so politically correct anymore.”

There is a kind of naïveté among some writers covering Trump who are shocked at his success. But we should not be surprised. In the U.S., we cling to an illusion about our inevitable progress away from a past of slavery, Jim Crow segregation and overt racism. Some of us even hoped that electing the first African American president would mean a post-racial era, but the fact that Stormfront’s servers crashed the night Obama was elected should have made us warier. Trump’s broad appeal should remind us that white supremacy is neither new to the U.S. nor an aberration, but rather it is a consistent feature of our political landscape.

Autumn — Using The Season To Beat Self-Sabotage

2016-09-21-1474490215-9465970-17185939846_31d830277a_b.jpg

I’m sitting here in front of a fire much like the one above with a laptop upon my lap, realizing we’re within a few hours of Autumn Equinox here in the Northern Hemisphere–a time of transition.

Traditionally Autumn is a time of abundant color, pumpkins and squash, heartier harvest meals, and cozy sweaters, yet too often we forget that it’s also a time of fertile transition.

As I sit here in the darkness of the cool night with my face lit by fire, I smell the crinkled leaves around me and hear the sound of crickets singing out their final goodbyes to summer.

I’m reminded that we’re coming full circle again
. Even though we’re in the middle of harvest season, something is dying, and we’re heading full force into the darker nights of winter.

Death is here.

Trees are pulling chlorophyll from their leaves, bushes are celebrating their now shriveled flowers with bursts of berries, and the sun is starting to give us less and less attention.

For me–grief, sadness, shame, and guilt arise. Not because I’ve done anything wrong, but because some potent potential arrived upon my doorstep today and I’ve reverted back to old beliefs and patterns of unworthiness.

For a fleeting moment I found myself celebrating the possibilities, yet in my next breath, I felt familiar negative feelings I’ve carried since childhood.

So I catch myself. When something good starts to unfold for me, I’ve learned to breathe through the rising emotion of fear. If I don’t, I drop the ball, give up and throw in the towel.

You see it’s easier for a lot of us to fall back into old patterns when life starts to get good.

It feels safer to expect hard times because we’ve been conditioned by well-intending parents, television, and books to expect less for ourselves and to play it safe.

We strive for our dreams, working our asses off, and then when the universe starts to deliver something, we say to ourselves: “Oh, this can’t be. I don’t deserve this….there must be some mistake.”

But we DO deserve goodness in this lifetime. We’ve just bought into the cheap belief that we don’t- or that we can’t.

According to Psychology Today, Behavior is said to be self-sabotaging when it creates problems and interferes with long-standing goals.

When deep potential arrived upon my doorstep today, I marveled at her abundant possibilities, yet immediately felt the guilt and shame of old beliefs arising.

As I sat there listening to the crackling fire, I remembered that all familiar things must die–even things we’ve clung to since childhood–familiar things that while toxic, have remained comfortable.

So now as fall wraps her dark abundant cloak of change around me, I throw it all into the fire. I write those beliefs down on paper and throw them into the flames to be consumed by a wisdom older than any of us.

I watch the sun crawl across the sky during these ever-shortening days and I’m reminded that like the light, these memories too shall pass. These voices in my head that I, like so many of us carry, will fade in time as I distance myself each time they arise.

Like nature’s ruthless way of sucking the life out of the plants around us, we have a fertile opportunity right now to suck the life out of toxic beliefs each time they surface.

Nature makes us endure the darkness of winter before the dawn of spring, and we must remember that old beliefs must die before new dreams are born.

Before the harvest of good in our lives, something old and toxic must die. Death is around the corner waiting for payment. Death is a fertile compost transforming demons to fertilize hopeful spring moments leading to abundant summer dreams.

So my hope is that you join me in using this fertile time of year to celebrate the ceremony of fall all around us.

Cast into the crisp winds what no longer serves you and remember to leave behind your self-sabotage like an old season, so that it too can become the fertile compost of your future.

MacArthur Foundation announced the recipients of its annual MacArthur Fellowship ― commonly referred to as the “Genius Grant” ― early Thursday morning. Dianne Newman, Sarah Stillman and Joyce J. Scott are just three of those recipients, earning themselves a $ 625,000 stipend and a spot in the history books next to previous fellows like writer Susan Sontag, astrophysicist Joseph Taylor, and artist Carrie Mae Weems.

The MacArthur Fellowship dates back to 1981, created to acknowledge and celebrate high-achieving individuals in disciplines as diverse as sculpture, chemistry, human rights law and engineering. What was once a $ 50,000 award has since grown into a six-figure prize, awarded to American citizens and residents with a “no strings attacked” policy to enable them to pursue new creative work.

This year, the fellows include 12 women and 11 men, ranging in age from the 31 to 67. Together, the group of artists, scientists, writers, lawyers, engineers and activists are nothing short of inspirational. See the entire list of new “geniuses” below:

Zen Meditation in Plain English

Zen Meditation in Plain English

The jolt of confidence you get when discussing a day’s performance with a seasoned veteran can take any activity to a higher level. In his concise and informative Zen Meditation in Plain English, meditation veteran John Daishin Buksbazen gives detailed directions for each step of Zen-style meditation, from getting into the different postures and developing breath concentration, all the way up to intensive training periods. With only one short chapter on what the mind should be doing while “sitting” (as they say in Zen), his focus is on getting the fundamentals right. He also offers a rare introduction to the importance and mechanics of group practice and a well-selected “Frequently Asked Questions” section at the end. While Buksbazen repeatedly says that there is no substitute for a good teacher, until you find one, Zen Meditation in Plain English will do nicely. –Brian Bruya

‘West Wing’ Cast Reunites To Campaign For Hillary Clinton In Ohio

The cast of “West Wing” is reuniting. Sort-of.

Several stars of the hit TV show will hit the ground running with Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton this weekend, traveling to multiple campaign stops in the Buckeye State.

Members of the “West Wing” cast, including Allison Janney (C.J. Cregg), Bradley Whitford (Josh Lyman), Richard Schiff (Toby Ziegler), Dulé Hill (Charlie Young), Mary McCormack (Kate Harper) and Joshua Malina (Will Bailey) will join forces at six different locations on Saturday and Sunday.

The actors will encourage Ohio residents in Mahoning Valley, Sandusky, Toledo, Cleveland, Dayton and Columbus to register to vote in the battleground state.

Martin Sheen, who played President Josiah Bartlet, won’t be there, but he’s already endorsed Clinton. And he’s dismissed her Republican rival Donald Trump as an “empty-headed moron.” The president has spoken.

Why Your Environment Is Working Against You—And How To Fix It

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

Did you know that the way we dress, our facial expressions, our posture, and the tone of our voice make up 93 percent of what we communicate to others?  Research pioneered by Dr. Albert Mehrabian shows that what we communicate non-verbally can be highly impactful. We are hardwired to listen to our senses without conscious thought, and this ability helps protect us from danger and saves us time making endless decisions throughout the day.

If we are so influenced by our senses, what else is subconsciously triggering our everyday decisions?

Lately, I’ve been trying to pay more attention to “nudges” in the built environment around us. The built environment includes the size and shape of our roads, parks, and buildings: these all drive our behavior. Specifically, I’ve been in search of ways the built environment can affect decisions we make about our health. What we see, hear, smell, taste, and feel impacts our actions—and emerging research in urban planning, occupational health, and behavioral science validates this. Here are just a few of the many ways to leverage the built environment to improve health outcomes:

Nudges to encourage movement

Building location and access to public amenities can impact how much we move. For example, research shows that proximity to parks and other recreational facilities is consistently associated with higher levels of physical activity and healthier weight status among youth and adults. The same goes for proximity to public transit—there is a link between access to public transportation and physical activity since transit use typically involves walking to a bus or subway stop. In one study, train commuters walked an average of 30 percent more steps per day and were four times more likely to walk 10,000 steps per day than car commuters.

Several studies show that simply letting people know the health benefits of taking the stairs and showing their location (like putting a sign in the elevator lobby or using stair banners, like these) increases stair usage by 54 percent. Taking this a bit further, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a “StairWELL to Better Health”campaign in its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. They use music, art, an upgraded appearance, and motivational signage to nudge employees to use the stairs more often. (Check out their downloadable signs, and see “before” and “after” images of their stairwells.)

Nudges to encourage healthy eating habits

You may not have heard the term “choice architecture,” but you experience its impact every time you stand next to the candy display at a checkout counter. Choice architecture refers to the different ways in which choices can be presented to consumers and the impact of that presentation on consumer decision making.

For example, the number of choices presented, the manner in which attributes are described, and the presence of a “default” can all influence consumer choice. Many companies are using this strategy by reducing the number of unhealthy foods available in the workplace or by making them harder to find.  ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Brian Wansink, director of Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab and author of Mindless Eating, suggests a number of ways our eating behavior is significantly impacted by the way food is presented to us. For example, in some of his studies, people were 44 percent less likely to snack in kitchens that were tidy versus kitchen environments that were messy.

Keeping the kitchen clean is more than just a sanitation issue—it can affect how much we eat. In another study, Wansink found that people tend to eat less on plates that are 9-10 inches in diameter. People piled up food on larger plates, but felt “deprived” and went for a second helping when eating on smaller plates (around 6 inches in diameter). His other studies show that people are likely to serve themselves 20 percent less food on plates with “contrasting colors” to the food they are eating, e.g., white pasta on a red or blue plate. White breads and pastas on white plates? That is a recipe for “carb-loading”!

Nudges to reduce stress and improve well-being

We have a strong desire to be in and among nature. It’s only natural: for most of human history we spent all our time outdoors. This preference, often referred to biophilia, was introduced and popularized by E.O. Wilson, known as the “father of biodiversity.” Wilson suggests that there is an instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems.

In Biophilic Design: Theory, Science and Practice, authors Stephen R. Kellert, Judith Heerwagen, and Martin Mador describe the importance of nature for human productivity:

“Nature is rife with sensory richness and variety in patterns, textures, light, and colors. All organisms respond with genetically programmed reflexes to the diurnal and seasonal patterns of sunlight and climate.”

Interestingly, biophilia-based design can be manifested in many ways. The most obvious way is to incorporate real plants, water, and natural views into buildings. Another way is to create “natural analogues” or use materials and patterns that evoke nature, such as artwork, ornamentation, biomorphic forms, or the use of natural materials. A third way to use biophilia is through configuration of space, by organizing interior environments or man-made outdoor landscapes, using similar to natural environments elements. In its paper “The Economics of Biophilia,” environmental consulting firm Terrapin Bright Green suggests:

“Over the last quarter century, case studies have documented the advantage of biophilic experience, including improved stress recovery rates, lower blood pressure, improved cognitive functions, enhanced mental stamina and focus, decreased violence and criminal activity, elevated moods and increased learning rates.”

There are hundreds more nudges and design strategies such as these that urban planners, architects, product designers, business owners, and homeowners can use to shape the environment around us to improve health and well-being. In the words of Winston Churchill:

“We shape our buildings; thereafter, our buildings shape us.”

The key is to be aware of how our environment affects us and to use this knowledge for good.

Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan Pledge Billions To Fight All Disease

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan on Wednesday pledged more than $ 3 billion toward a plan to “cure, prevent or manage all disease within our children’s lifetime.”

Speaking through tears at a San Francisco event to announce the initiative, Chan said she hoped to spare parents the pain she had seen while delivering difficult news as a pediatrician.

“In those moments and in many others we’re at the limit of what we understand about the human body and disease, the science behind medicine, the limit of our ability to alleviate suffering. We want to push back that boundary,” she said.

The event was attended by business and political luminaries including former Microsoft Corp Chairman Bill Gates, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom.

Zuckerberg said science and the medical community have made rapid advancements over the last 50 years, including eradicating smallpox and nearly eliminating polio without the aid of modern technology.

“Today, just four kinds of diseases cause the majority of deaths,” Zuckerberg added in a posting on his Facebook page, citing cancer, heart disease, infectious diseases and neurological diseases. “We can make progress on all of them with the right technology.”

The plan includes creating a bioscience research center, called the Biohub, developing a chip to diagnose diseases, and ways to monitor the bloodstream continuously and map cell types in the body.

Chan and Zuckerberg will donate $ 600 million over the next decade to the Biohub in San Francisco, bringing together Bay-area researchers and scientists from the University of California at San Francisco, the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University.

Two initial Biohub projects will be a Cell Atlas, a map of cells controlling the body’s major organs, and the Infectious Disease Initiative to develop new tools, tests, vaccines and strategies for fighting diseases such as HIV, Ebola and Zika.

The Biohub will be led by University of California, San Francisco professor Joseph DeRisi and Stanford University professor Stephen Quake, whose work includes small molecule screening and biological measurements.

Dr. Cori Bargmann, a Rockefeller University neuroscientist, will lead all of Chan Zuckerberg’s science initiatives.

Any research, tools and material coming out of Biohub, which will work with a network of 10 to 15 laboratories across the world, will be “available to every scientist, everywhere,” Bargmann said.

“If you take great people and set them loose on important problems in an intelligent way and give them a long time horizon there will be progress.”

Dem Megadonor Tom Steyer Gives Millions More To Bolster Ground Game

An umbrella organization of labor and progressive groups is ramping up on-the-ground operations in an attempt to propel Hillary Clinton and like-minded Democratic candidates to victory this fall. And they’re getting a multi-million-dollar cash infusion from one of the party’s biggest donors.

For Our Future PAC, a 501c4 and super PAC organization, is aiming to knock on 5.3 million doors between now and Election Day in a variety of battleground states, representatives of the group told The Huffington Post. The group, which has already reached 2 million households, is the creation of leading labor groups and billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer, who announced on Tuesday that his group NextGen Climate was donating an additional $ 15 million to the cause on top of the $ 5 million it has already given. For Our Future PAC’s total budget is now $ 55 million after starting with a $ 50 million objective.

The investment in Get Out The Vote operations represents a huge bet that a conventional campaign playbook still matters in this highly unconventional election. With Donald Trump banking on free media and his powers of persuasion to win the presidency, progressives are turning to old-fashioned door-knocking.

Real change happens through real people and you have to get people where they actually are which requires conversations on the issues they care about,” said Amanda Brown, campaign director for For Our Future PAC. “When there are billions of dollars poured into TV and radio ads, those just don’t hit home in the same way. I think, also, given the nature of the candidates we are choosing between this cycle, what you see on the air is heavy on persuasion, convincing people they have to vote. The work we are doing is to try and empower individuals and make them understand that their power is voting.”

At its inception, For Our Future caused discord within labor ranks, as several building trade unions scoffed at the alliance with a donor known for his environmental-based opposition to major energy projects like the Keystone Pipeline. But a close election has a way of quieting discord. And the group appears to be gearing up in the closing weeks of the campaign.

As part of its ramped up ground game, For Our Future has expanded its operations to Missouri and North Carolina in addition to work being done in Nevada, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida (all, tellingly, with Senate races this cycle). Its staff currently numbers more than 700, with the vast majority in those swing states.

Though Trump has largely passed on building a robust campaign apparatus, an investment in on-the-ground organizing for Democrats does not come without challenges. The party faces significant hurdles with white working-class voters drawn to Trump’s message, millennials turned off by Clinton, and some of the coalition that helped elect Barack Obama twice proving difficult to re-mobilize. To combat that, For Our Future has brought together different entities with ties to unique constituencies.

The group, for instance, is working with the NAACP as well as Color of Change to engage black voters and bolster community-based activism. It is working with VoteVets, a progressive veterans organization, to do more door-to-door campaigning in addition to its traditional focus on paid media. And, according to notes provided to The Huffington Post, it is assisting several state-specific organizations to micro-target groups of voters. That list includes Make it Works Nevada, Ohio Environmental Council, Equality PA, and Wisconsin Jobs Now.

“The whole idea is building power up,” said Brown. “So there are a ton of great organizations who have been on the ground in these communities doing work for longer than I’ve been alive. What we are not doing is saying you have to do this differently. Having a trusted messenger is what matters most so we want to make sure we are elevating the good work already happening in that community. That is key.”

Why We Care So Much About Brad And Angelina’s Divorce

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are divorcing. Seems strange how much energy and personal time we invest in complete strangers. And then when something like this happens it startles us and makes us feel sad. Sad for the end of an era when our idealization of what a life could be is writ large in the relationship of someone else. It’s also a cold, unwelcome reminder that life and dreams and other people are never quite what they seem to be. Even if they’ve been the stars of your fantasies for half a lifetime.

But what else is there to do once you’ve built a glass house for someone else’s marriage or life, except knock it down. It’s so human of us. To peer over the fence at another’s way of life out of voyeuristic curiosity, only to shake our heads and tisk our tongues in disapproval. It’s also so human of us to forget or choose to ignore this infallible truth – that all humans are human.

It’s a truth that is the impenetrable foundation for a more forgiving and compassionate life and world-view. But it’s so much more interesting to hold out hope for the secret gods among us. It tickles our sense of separateness between “us and them.” And confirms our belief that other’s lives are more fulfilling and interesting. We also proclaim with vicarious arrogance that we would do it differently and here’s how.

I’ve only just started to outgrow the inclination for celebrity worship that consumed my teens and twenties. But even still, it’s only graduated to a different, more sophisticated version of the same – this time it’s dead writers instead of reality stars and historic leaders instead of pop singers.

Maybe we’re genetically predisposed to admiration turned idol-worship. It’s been so human for so long, even Moses can attest. I guess what I’m getting at is at the core maybe a deeper (or deeply rooted) fallacy that “what is out there is greener than what’s in here.” It’s got to be! we cry. But maybe if we’d start to look at life with the truth that all humans are indeed human, there would be less hero worship and more appreciation for the preciousness in each of us. Maybe more would be done to help the less fortunate. Maybe more of ourselves we’d make.

Congress: Pass Mental Health First Aid Funding

In a crowded Chinese restaurant a few years ago, a colleague saw his panic-struck brother grab at his own throat – a telltale sign he was choking. He instinctively applied the Heimlich maneuver, dislodging the offending piece of broccoli.

He learned the Heimlich in a first aid class, which was clearly time and money well spent.

We heavily invest in prevention, early intervention and awareness for every conceivable disease from the neck down. Like my colleague and millions of others, we train adults and children in CPR and First Aid because choking and bad car accidents happen, often without warning.

Yet somehow, when it comes to mental illnesses, we take everything we know about prevention, early intervention and emergency response and throw it out the window. The subtext is that the issues caused by these diseases are someone’s fault, or that people need to just pull themselves together, or that “it will never happen to me.”

Members of Congress, aware of the kind of mental health crises that are all too commonplace, are pushing bipartisan legislation that will help create a nation of well-informed mental health first responders, a nation of people who know what alcohol abuse looks like, how to handle and support someone having hallucinations, what to do to truly assess someone for risk of suicide.

The Mental Health First Aid Act, championed by Reps. Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) and Doris Matsui (D-CA), requires the federal mental health agency to award grants to initiate and sustain mental health awareness training. Individuals eligible for inclusion in training would include teachers, law enforcement, emergency personnel and veterans who are likely to be confronted with Americans experiencing a mental health crisis.

The goal of Mental Health First Aid is to train those individuals in how to safely de-escalate crisis situations, recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness, and encourage timely referral to mental health services.

Sometimes the person in crisis is you.

An 18-year old girl in Central California was giving away her possessions and was on the verge of suicide when she realized she might be pregnant. Having just taken the Mental Health First Aid course in her art class, she realized she was in deep trouble, saw a counselor and got help. She readily admits that had she not taken the class and realized the symptoms of her own mental illness she would not be here today.

Because of Mental Health First Aid training, her suicide note did not become her tragic last words, but a school art project and a poignant symbol of how we can all save lives, and save souls, and sometimes save ourselves.

One in five Americans will experience a mental health condition in the course of any given year. Mental illness is a disorder just like any other – it can be acute, or chronic. It can be mild, or severe. It can have roots in biology, genetics or life experience – like the death of a parent or a nearby terrorist attack.

And it can happen to you. It can happen to your children. It can happen to your neighbor, your friend, your coworker.

What was my colleague’s brother supposed to do when he was choking at that restaurant? Make an appointment with a gastroenterologist to remove the food stuck in his throat? Funding treatment services and supporting public education for emergency response are not trade-offs, just like teaching the Heimlich maneuver and financing specialty medical care are not a zero-sum game. We can and must do both.

Mental illnesses should be treated no differently than physical ailments. When someone you know is hearing voices that aren’t there, or drowning in grief from the death of a child, or experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress from the loss of his fellow soldiers, you need to know how to help them in the heat of a crisis moment.

We all do.

Yoga: The Science of the Soul

Yoga: The Science of the Soul

Much of what is known as yoga today emphasizes physical postures and exercises to increase flexibility and help relaxation. But in fact, yoga has its roots in centuries of rigorous investigation and research in the East to develop an understanding of human consciousness and its potential. In Yoga, Osho explains the meaning of some of the most important Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, an early “scientist of the soul” who is credited with being the father of Raja Yoga, or the “royal path” of yoga that uses physical postures and breath primarily as a means to achieve higher states of consciousness. With a fresh translation of these ancient texts, and unique Osho insights into the modern mind and its psychology, Patanjali comes to life on the pages with an approach to using yoga for greater self-understanding that is absolutely relevant to our times. An invaluable resource for beginning or experienced yoga practitioners, and for anyone who seeks to better understand the intricate and powerful relationship that exists between body and mind

  • Focusing On Error In Polls Isn’t Sexy, But It’s Necessary

It’s that point in the election cycle where if you don’t like the results of one poll, you can wait five minutes and another one will come out. People are inundated with numbers, which they might not know how to interpret.

Polls contain “error” in them, which means the numbers are estimates of what people think, rather than precise data points. Pollsters and journalists will usually provide a “margin of error” that approximates how much the numbers might change due to the random chance of who is selected to participate in the poll.

But analysts know there’s more error in a poll than this margin indicates. Some say that’s why we shouldn’t report margins of error at all. And we often don’t do a good job of explaining any type of error to audiences.

Nate Cohn provided an excellent demonstration of polling error not accounted for in a margin of error by having four different sets of pollsters re-analyze data from The New York Times Upshot/ Siena Florida poll. Their results ranged from Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton being 4 points ahead to her GOP opponent Donald Trump ahead by 1 point, using the exact same data but creating their own likely voter calculations. This is an important lesson in non-sampling sources of error: The choices an analyst makes about how to define likely voters can substantially affect the outcome of the poll.

But Cohn takes the lesson a step further and argues that the existence of these other sources of error mean margin of error wasn’t worth reporting in the original pollClearly, the reported margin of error due to sampling, even when including a design effect (which purports to capture the added uncertainty of weighting), doesn’t even come close to capturing total survey error,” Cohn states.

It isn’t actually unusual for polls not to report a margin of error. Some surveys don’t report margins of error or even mention the concept, particularly online surveys which don’t use random sampling ― the basis for a margin of error calculation. But the NYT Upshot/Siena poll was conducted by telephone, and a margin of error typically accompanies these types of polls.

Not reporting a margin of error brings up a big concern for those of us trying to communicate with readers about polling: If there’s not a prominently listed margin of error, do they understand that there’s error? Do they have any idea how much error there might be?

Unlike analysts, who know there’s error and can quickly estimate a margin of error by looking at a poll’s sample size, most readers aren’t thinking about the uncertainty in polling estimates. It’s up to the experts to explain it.

The question, then, is how best to explain survey error. Cohn chose to mention it, but not give it an exact figure in the poll release story: “All polls, of course, are subject to a margin of error. But the margin of error does not include many other potential sources of error, like the choices of the many undecided voters, or decisions made by pollsters about how to adjust the poll.”

This is a good start. However, that still leaves readers to wonder just how much error there is in the poll. How much error do surveys usually have? Most non-experts probably don’t have the answer to that question, so could assume the survey only has half a percentage point of error. Or they might assume it has 8 points of error.

It also still doesn’t address error based on people who couldn’t be reached because of how the poll was conducted (“coverage error,” such as those who rely solely on mobile phones in a landline telephone survey), people who didn’t respond to the survey (“nonresponse error”) and potential bias in how the questions were asked and answers recorded (“measurement error”).

We should be able to address error better in the polling field. Pollsters release hundreds of polls in an election cycle, often with great care given to how the poll is conducted and how the sample is designed. It’s time to put more care into estimating and describing the error in those polls. Doing so is important to both the general public trying to understand polls and to pollsters themselves: If we’re providing realistic expectations of error, polling “misses” that are actually reasonable based on expected survey error might be better understood.

But that means putting aside the horserace for a while and focusing on the errors. Unfortunately the horserace is what drives attention and traffic ― and both pollsters and journalists need that to survive in their industries. Technical discussions of error (like this one) aren’t going to get many clicks.

However, Nate Cohn and the four sets of pollsters he worked with took the time to dive into the errors with very useful results. It’s a lesson many experts will likely use well beyond this year’s election. So maybe the risk is worthwhile.

7 Things You Need To Know To Tame The Monkey Mind

The monkey mind is something every modern human is familiar with. It’s that incessant thought stream that no matter how hard you try never seems to settle down.

It’s the worries that keep you up at night, the assumptions that cause you grief, the projections you make about the future and the regrets and sentiments you go over from the past.

To tame the monkey mind takes commitment and a deep inner desire for peace. Calming the monkey mind is the first step on the path towards life mastery.

When you consciously realize that your thoughts are energy, and that the energetic implications of what you maintain focus on are actually creating your life to be based in either joy or suffering, you can be empowered to take control over your monkey mind and access the peace of mind that makes sheer existence a true gift.

    1. Seek Common Ground and Connection

Division is a distraction from the divine. When you see yourself as a lone wolf, you lose sight of the pack, and you struggle to survive, let alone thrive. Yet when you can look around and feel a connection to all the people you encounter, everything changes.

You start to focus on connection instead of seeing everything as separate. Nothing is separate. The sun in the sky keeps us all alive. The people around you complaining about their mundane daily disturbances are going through the motions just like you are, they’re merely at a different point in their personal evolution.

Instead of focusing on your independence and feeding your loneliness with divisive thought patterns, bring the focus back to finding common ground.

When you do this you shift your entire perspective.

    2. Look Deeper Than the Story

Society, the people you surround yourself with, your past experiences and your present belief system all work to strengthen the story you’re narrating in your head all day long. It’s so easy to attach to your story and your thoughts are the glue that binds you there.

If you struggle with self-esteem and that’s a part of your story then without a doubt your thoughts are the roots keeping that belief alive.

When you can remain present and focus on how you feel in each moment you can start to release the constant narration and let go of the belief structures embedded in your story that hold you back from realizing your true potential.

    3. Realize YOU Are Not Your Thoughts

Endless thoughts flow through your mind. A thousand thoughts pass through your mind every hour, and you have two options.

The first option is to allow your mind to act like a hose. Thoughts stream in through the top of the funnel and are directed out, they’re let go of, and they flow elsewhere without attachment.

The second option is to allow your mind to act like a filter. Thoughts attempt to pass through the filter but they get trapped. The filter of your mind clings to them for analysis and attachment. The filter gets all clogged up full of thoughts based in what you want and what you don’t want.

When you believe that every thought matters, that every thought that enters your brain is you, and that every thought needs to be examined, you become overburdened, overwhelmed, confused, directionless and prone to overanalyzing. You create internal resistance because you believe on a subconscious level that you are your thoughts.

When you allow your thoughts to show up and pass away without clinging on to them in an attempt to analyze and integrate, you access a freedom that few people embody. You enter into a vibrational state of allowing which is expansive and creates space for you to access the peace and pure joy of being.

    4. Let Go of Excuses

I don’t have time. I’m too busy. These are everyone’s favorite excuses for not allowing connection, acceptance, and peace to enter your life on the level of experience.

When you’re ready to let go of the monkey mind and free yourself from the chains that keep you stuck in your head and separated from the world around you, you stop making excuses.

Breaking down the mental constructs that you’ve been attached to and strengthening for your entire life is no easy task, but it is possible and the more excuses you make, the longer it will take to break away from the mental chatter.

    5. Develop a Drama Free Mentality

There’s a tendency in our society to become addicted to drama. The boldest example of this is television, you flick on the TV and suddenly you’re immersed in a world wrought with drama.

Breaking the cycle of drama will create more peace in your life, thoughts and relationships. Over time you can consciously train your brain to let go of the things you would normally make a big dramatic deal over.

Your life can be whatever you want it to be, a soap opera or a peaceful expansive existence that plays out moment by moment.

    6. Release Judgement

What were they thinking? What’s wrong with them? Why are they doing that?

Judgment creates an inner resistance, a pushing against what is without ever changing what is. When you allow yourself to move into acceptance, even with the things you don’t particularly like, the monkey mind backs down.

The monkey mind thrives on judgment and drama, it’s the fuel that feeds the fire of your thoughts.

When you would normally jump into judgment, whether it’s over someone else’s actions or your own, try to practice allowing things to just be as they are. Allowing isn’t the same as condoning, it’s simply an energetic shift which helps you release attachment and aversion, the monkey mind’s favorite snacks.

    7. Practice Awareness

Practice awareness of the thoughts streaming through your mind. You can’t one day wake up and decide to tame the monkey mind without bringing awareness of the thoughts themselves to the forefront. Awareness is the balm that soothes the irritation the monkey mind loves to create.

Awareness is different from attachment because it integrates with the energy of allowing. Thoughts pass by and your awareness shines a light upon them without the incessant desire to unconsciously attach to their meaning.

In every moment you can bring awareness to the forefront of what you’re feeling and thinking. When you notice anger and irritation bubbling up let yourself become consciously aware of these thoughts and your reaction to them and then just let them go.

5 Body Imbalances You Might Unknowingly Experience

    By: Cassie Shortsleeve

Technology has improved our lives in many ways, but not without some consequences, including these five common bodily aches. Here’s how to address the pain without pulling the plug.

There’s no doubt that technology has its perks, from allowing us to work from all corners of the earth to meditating via an app at the touch of a finger. But despite the many advantages technology brings us every single day, it also has a downside–one that can be very painful if ignored. Americans suffer from a number of ailments relating to technology, including a type of back and shoulder pain that is now often referred to as “tech neck” (the repeated act of craning your neck forward and down over a screen, resulting in discomfort that can lead to strain and stiffness). The solution, however, isn’t to disconnect and revert back to powerless Pilgrim living. Instead, heed this advice from Sonima.com‘s pain and anatomy advisor, Pete Egoscue: “If an activity is hurting us, take a look at the body. Pain is the body’s way of trying to tell us something.”

Related: Understanding the Source of Back Pain

What is your body saying? It could be hinting at an imbalance. Maybe you’re not vertically loaded properly–meaning your head, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles aren’t stacking up right. Or perhaps you’re just not bearing weight evenly, says Egoscue, creator of the Egoscue Method for pain-free living.

To find out exactly what your body is telling you, tune in. Once you start paying attention to the subtle signals (usually accompanied by a minor ache), stretch or shift positions to continue enjoying your TV, laptop, smartphone or whatever device is captivating your attention in comfort and with peace of body and mind. Use Egoscue’s guide below to help translate your body’s messages and take appropriate action.

Related: Simple Stretches for Office Workers

When this hurts: BACK, SHOULDERS, HEAD
Your body may be saying…change the way you sit.
Sitting with your shoulders slumped forward, hip flexors shortened, and back rounded can put extra stress on your lower back, which may curve into a ‘C’ shape instead of its natural ‘S’ shape. This pain doesn’t come from only sitting, but also from being misaligned. Your body is compensating, Egoscue says.
Listen and learn: Look down at your feet. You want them hip-width apart facing forward with toes slightly turned in. Your knees will want to come together, but keep them out, he says. Then pull your shoulders down, relax your abs, and roll up and forward with your hips, putting an arch back into your lower back with your pelvis. In this position, he says, you’re vertically loaded. “That’s the way you sit without effort. Your body has just adapted and adjusted to what you have conditioned it to do.” Sit like this and you could notice back and shoulder pain dissipate and even see improvements in issues, like constipation and digestion, he says.

To learn the four other body imbalances that you might unknowingly experience, continue reading the original article on Sonima.com.

Clinton Versus Trump: Black Swans And Perfect Storms

Supporters of Hillary Clinton have long feared the ” Black Swan” – that cataclysmic event which gives Donald Trump more than a puncher’s chance to knock her out. But more discerning worriers conjure a perfect storm of circumstances which, coalescing at just the wrong time, dismantle her edge in the electoral college.

Two weeks ago the skies seemed clear enough. The month started with a more comfortable candidate taking questions from reporters, giving good and measured speeches, and dismissing the feverish rumors about her health with a few amusing quips. She was reaching out to disaffected Republicans while attacking Trump with an air of presidential confidence. The most concrete concerns focused on turnout and demographics and, even here, her superior ground game gave her several paths to 270 electoral votes.

Still, it was possible to imagine a demographic breakdown which, although unlikely, would place her on the razor’s edge between victory and defeat.

In theory, Trump’s gift for repelling blacks, Hispanics, women, young people and college-educated whites gave her a daunting advantage. So why were the polls tightening? The simplest answer was Trump’s massive lead among whites without a college degree – particularly working-class men. Here, Trump’s attacks on free trade and immigration, and promises to preserve entitlements, gains him a larger and more loyal following than Mitt Romney enjoyed in 2012.

True, this demographic is shrinking as opposed to those where Clinton leads. This gives her the potential to overwhelm Trump’s narrower base. But, in itself, changing demographics means much less than intensity of support – who actually shows up to vote. Thus a gifted pessimist can imagine a scenario where, despite her organizational advantages, turnout goes absolutely haywire.

Start with what appears to be a passion gap. Polling shows that over 60% of the registered voters who support Trump are following the campaign closely, and over 90% say that they are certain to vote. Clinton voters are less attentive – 45% – and a full 20% are less committed to voting. Thus polls of likely – as opposed to registered – voters erase Clinton’s edge.

There are reasons to question this model, and it overlooks the distribution of votes in the electoral college. Still, to win comfortably Clinton must reassemble the Obama coalition: the minorities and young people – otherwise disinclined to vote – who turned out to elect and reelect America’s first black president. So far, it seems, she is falling short.

Obama is working this demographic hard, and the Clinton campaign is deploying Michelle Obama, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren to help. But millennials, particularly blacks but also other minorities, seem less drawn to Hillary Clinton than to the president, and young African-Americans are harder to reach than their parents and grandparents. The question is less who they vote for than whether they vote at all.

A depressed turnout among her potential supporters would jeopardize Clinton in crucial swing states where the race has tightened, leaving her more vulnerable to defeat. And a less enthusiastic voting base leaves her vulnerable to unforeseen events – as this weekend’s bombings reminded us yet again.

Even so, to have a chance of winning Trump needs to turn out a bunch of less educated white Americans who almost never vote. Here, too, passion is important, and events may matter – these otherwise disaffected people have to believe that Trump can win and that, as president, he would be a human Powerball ticket, transforming their lives for the better. While a massive influx of new voters seems unlikely, it is not inconceivable – as Trump’s recent rise in Ohio suggests.

Still, this alone is not enough. Trump also needs more Republicans to come home – including suburban and college-educated whites. To some degree, polls suggest that this is already occurring. Indeed, given that our politics are polarized, our candidates polarizing, and our information compartmentalized, the grip of old loyalties will only intensify. But to garner all the Republican – leaning but wary voters he needs, Trump needs to look normal or, more accurately, to create the illusion of normality.

Finally, there is the impact of third-party candidates – Gary Johnson and Jill Stein. Trump not only needs them to outperform expectations for such political outliers, but to drain disproportionate support from Clinton. And, as of now, polls suggest that third-party candidates are hurting her more than Trump. The question is how many, and how much.

But suppose all that happens: overwhelming blue-collar support for Trump; depressed turnout for Clinton; a host of new Trump voters; a massive restoration of party loyalty among Republicans; and third-party damage to Clinton in key states. Further assume that virtually every important event between now and November breaks Trump’s way – including, contrary to right reason, the debates.

It then becomes possible to imagine a Trump electoral college victory, of necessity based on winning Florida, Ohio, North Carolina and, least likely, Pennsylvania. Or even that nightmare of improbabilities: a 269 – 269 electoral college tie. That would throw the election into the House of Representatives, which could give us President Trump.

This is the sequence of horribles that worries Democratic pros. For with the economy still flagging for too many Americans, the GOP should have the advantage of a “change election.” What they need is for their candidate to become thinkable for a sufficient plurality of Americans.

This is why thoughtful Democrats have started sweating the polls, near – even despite an overwhelming advertising assault by the Clinton campaign. They fret that all the negative media about emails and the Clinton Foundation, however skewed, is tarnishing the positive image of Hillary Clinton which emerged from her convention. They wonder if her campaign has focused too much on denouncing Trump instead of inspiring voters. They fear the unknown which is yet to come.

    Then stuff started happening.

The first warning shot was fired by the moderator who couldn’t shoot straight – Matt Lauer. During back-to-back appearances at a forum devoted to military matters, Lauer consumed much of Clinton’s time aggressively re-litigating the email controversy. In embarrassing contrast, he allowed Trump to deliver a series of lies and idiocies with his usual bluster, largely unimpeded by any references to reality.

This drove home some pitfalls awaiting Clinton in the “debates” – a word to be used advisedly. First, the quality of discourse depends greatly on the skill and resolve of the moderator. Second, absent a determined interlocutor to call him to account, a self- assured ignoramus like Trump can appear “presidential” while reciting nonsense. Given that the expectations for Trump are so low, in such a permissive environment he might be deemed the “winner” if he simply completes most of his sentences.

Then Clinton made an unforced error which confirmed the existence of a double standard – one for Trump, the other for everyone else. Speaking at a donor event – ever a fallow ground for folly – Clinton tossed half of Trump’s followers in “the basket of deplorables” – the “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic – you name it.” A pretty effective list of adjectives if directed against the man himself. But against a chunk of the public, not so much – at least if you’re running for president.

Such verbal slips are nothing new. Obama described a Republican base “clinging to their guns and religion”; Romney told a gaggle of rich folks that 47% of their fellow citizens were moochers. They both paid – Romney in particular, because it fit his caricature as a heartless plutocrat.

To some degree, so will Clinton pay. For those Democrats keeping score, it was a reminder that this year’s playing field is far from level – Trump spouts far worse things with such metronomic regularity that nothing he says seems to stick. Except, ironically, to Hillary Clinton.

Potentially more worrisome was her literal stumble at a Sunday event to commemorate 9/11. On Friday, it transpired, she had been diagnosed with pneumonia. Given the rigors of campaigning, this was no surprise. But her decision to “power through” her schedule without disclosing her illness led to a ruder surprise – an alarming piece of film followed by several hours of delay before the campaign fronted her pneumonia.

This created two problems, both predictable. For a moment, at least, it fueled all the health hysteria fomented by the Trump campaign – including that she is suffering from cerebral damage. More lasting, it fed the usual trope about Clinton’s lack of “transparency.”

Her campaign has put out more health information – which, along with steadiness during the debates, should help put this to rest. It also appears that, as he did with the aptly-named Dr. Oz, Trump will continue to vamp about his own superlative health, rooted in the benefits of Big Macs and insomnia. Still, this incident was another unpleasant reminder that, in presidential campaigns, surprises happen – whether or not provided by the Russians in October or, as just occurred, by terrorists from New Jersey. And it kept her off the stump for a few precious days.

As vexing, for once Trump did not stumble over himself to squander an advantage. His response to Clinton’s illness was, for him, positively demure. Instead, almost like a normal candidate, he seized on Clinton’s “basket of deplorables” to deplore her condescending cruelty to Americans who long to make their country great again.

Smart – this no doubt energizes his base and, quite possibly, could rally more nonvoters to Trump. Those “Deplorables For Trump” T-shirts are on their way. And the last thing Democrats need is a deepening class war with blue-collar whites – they’ve been on a wrong end of this one for years.

Perhaps fearful of humiliation, Trump has allowed his new campaign team to impose greater discipline. He is hewing more to prepared texts; blurring some of his most controversial positions; veering less into his own grievances. His attack lines, however outrageous, are more focused on Clinton. And he is finally up with attack ads of his own, placed strategically instead of at his whim. The Clinton camp can no longer count on Trump to help them – at least not quite so often.

Still, late last week, Trump provided fresh evidence of his own transcendent squalor. With chilling carelessness, he falsely accused Hillary Clinton of wanting to “destroy” the Second Amendment, and suggested that her Secret Service protectors “disarm” so that we could “see what happens to her.” This followed the latest episode in his five-year history of spearheading the birther movement – a “press conference” which spotlighted his own mendacity and, more important, renewed fundamental questions about the media’s responsibility in covering his campaign.

Pressed by his brain trust to at last abandon birtherism, Trump created drama by promising a major announcement. He then kept the media waiting for an hour, tying up cable news outlets, before appearing to promote his latest hotel. He capped this with a 30 -second statement that he now believed that America’s first black president was born in the United States.

He did not explain how, after years of falsehoods, he had now divined the truth. Nor did he apologize. Instead, he praised himself by offering still more lies: “Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy. I finished it.”

In fact, the Clinton campaign did not indulge in birther rhetoric. Its principal agent was Trump himself. Nor, despite his statement, did he accept Obama’s birth certificate when the president made it public – to the contrary, he questioned its validity. Never once, until last Friday, did he disown any part of the racist lies and insinuations which paved his entry into political life, and inspired the widespread belief among Republicans that Obama is a foreign-born Muslim.

For once, the combination of his contempt for truth, and for the media, inspired a swift reaction. Several cable commentators expressed embarrassment that he played them; major newspapers documented the litany of statements promoting birtherism which showed Trump, yet again, to be a liar. And, in the wake of this performance, important outlets – particularly The New York Times – analyzed the impact on our politics of candidate whose recourse to lies is so comprehensive and unconstrained. Here, as well it should have, the press at large refused to serve as conduit for a shameless and amoral con man.

The unanswered question arising from this incident is whether the media will, at last, cover Trump with the sustained rigor his candidacy deserves. For the Clinton campaign, this is perhaps the biggest worry of all – not simply that the media scrutinizes Clinton much more harshly, but that it slights substance in favor of superficiality, relieving Trump of the in-depth appraisal his candidacy is due.

Examples abound. We know that Trump admires Vladimir Putin. But what more do we know about this worrisome subject – including, as but one example, his financial ties to Russia?

Thanks to the Washington Post, we know that the Trump Foundation is a funnel for giving away other people’s money, including through illegal campaign contributions. But when will the press call out Trump for his unsupported assertions – widely reported without criticism – that the Clinton Foundation is a criminal enterprise awash in bribery?

And what about “transparency” writ large? We hear that Clinton’s health scare intensified her problems in this area. But what of the obvious truth that Trump is, by far, the most comprehensively secretive presidential candidate in modern history, concealing his tax returns, his business dealings, his sources of financing, and his supposedly massive- and quite possibly fictitious – charitable contributions?

It is not simply that the media narrative has created a false equivalency. It has given Clinton’s areas of opacity, though far less than Trump’s, a disproportionate share of coverage.

But another problem for the Clinton campaign is the media’s tendency to elevate transparency over substance.

It is not hyperbolic to suggest that, on matters of policy, Trump is a crank candidate – Lyndon LaRouche with money. Never has a major party nominee been so inexperienced, uninformed, behaviorally erratic, intellectually dishonest, and pervasively untruthful. His ideas about the economy, foreign policy, and national defense are routinely inconsistent, contradictory, incoherent and tinged with nonsense from the fringes of political thought.

His statements on taxation are, in the main, self canceling gibberish. On the day of his birther announcement, Trump backed away from a promised $ 1 trillion tax-cut for small businesses, before his campaign assured one interest group that Trump was still behind it, then promised another that Trump was not. In the last year, he has praised and denounced Janet Yellen and the Fed so many times that but one thing is clear – he has no grasp whatsoever of monetary policy. As for critical matters of science, he is an utter crackpot, whether the subject be global warming or vaccination.

And what of counter-terrorism? Trump’s renewed denunciations of Muslims, intemperate attacks on Hillary Clinton and promises to be tough may resonate with voters, especially in the wake of the bombings in New York and New Jersey and the stabbings in Minnesota – the kind of unpredictable occurrences which worry the Clinton campaign. But it is not sufficient for the media to speculate about the electoral impact of such events. The real question is what Trump’s “toughness” actually means in terms of policy and effectiveness, and how this compares to Clinton’s proposals to combat terrorism at home and abroad.

The fact that, unlike LaRouche, Trump is a major party candidate whose entertainment value provides the media with millions of eyeballs means that – unlike LaRouche – he could actually become president. Thus what he proposes to do as president is of the gravest consequence, and should be to those who cover him. And if Trump is the proverbial naked emperor on matters of policy, that must be rigorously explored.

But there hasn’t been nearly enough of this – and likely won’t be.

Why? There are lots of reasons, some rooted in institutional self-interest. But one of the most pious – and bogus – excuses comes from the public editor of the New York Times, Liz Spayd.

The media’s reluctance to critically examine Trump’s policy positions, she suggests, stems from the standards of objective journalism. Those who claim that the media is mired in “false equivalency” between Trump and Clinton are calling for “a partisan explanation passed off as factual judgment.” Thus the media should not be concerned that coverage of Clinton’s emails is excessive, lest they go down the “slippery slope” of covering the emails too little.

To say the least, this is problematic. To edify Ms.Spayd about where her own slippery slope is taking us, by way of grotesque exaggeration I offer this fictitious German news story from 1933: “While Herr Hitler’s statements about population control seem ill-considered, the appearance of the possibility of the potential for a conflict of interest on behalf of Mayor Schulz is equally troubling.”

My serious point is straightforward – both candidates’ statements about policy should not only be reported, but analyzed and dissected with bipartisan rigor. Nonetheless, in Spayd’s view, what critics “really want is for journalists to apply their own moral and ideological judgments to the candidates.”

Really? Or do they simply think that the media should be something more – and better – than a megaphone for unexamined claims on issues of the utmost public importance. Fairness in journalism should not mean a grant of substantive immunity to any candidate, passed off as objective journalism. Objectivity is different than vapidity.

Yet here we are. And so we await the first debate, perhaps the single most important moment of this campaign. As much as on the candidates, its outcome depends on whether the moderator, Lester Holt, asks Clinton and Trump the hard questions a president must answer.

For the candidates, that’s only fair. For the rest of us, it’s essential.

How to Waste Your Entire Life: A Quick Guide To Pleasure

The easiest way to waste decades of your life is to mistake pleasure for fulfillment.

Pleasure lives in the realm of now. It’s made of feeling and emotion, which are both very important, but predictably unstable. It’s impossible to base a meaningful life solely on the pursuit of pleasure.

At the extreme end of pleasure: over-eating, over-sleeping, chronic masturbation and sex addiction, television, benders, cocaine and ice cream (the verdict is still out here). Push the button, get the stimulus. Constant stimulation to dull the pain, anxiety and existential uncertainty of being a human in society.

It feels good to feel good. So why not try to feel good all the time? Pass the mint chocolate chip, please.

Fulfillment is concerned with your highest vision for the future. It doesn’t equate pain or discomfort today with pain or discomfort tomorrow. It assumes that the best is always yet to come. Those looking for fulfillment out of life will do things that aren’t fun now, to reap massive rewards later.

In his book Autobiography of a Yogi, Indian spiritual guru Paramahansa Yogananda recalls a conversation between a sage and his student:

The student exclaimed, “Master, you are wonderful….You have renounced riches and comforts to seek God and teach us wisdom.”

To which the wise sage replied:

“You are reversing the case! I have left a few paltry rupees, a few petty pleasures, for a cosmic empire of endless bliss. How then have I denied myself anything? I know the joy of sharing the treasure. Is that a sacrifice? The shortsighted worldly folk are verily the real renunciates! They relinquish an unparalleled divine possession for a poor handful of earthly toys!”

This irony captures the essence of seeking pleasure over fulfillment.

The other way toward fulfillment: Training for a triathlon, starting a business, writing a book, recording an album. All of these things can bring pleasure in the short term. But more often than not, they do not. They are not fun. They are a constant struggle. They take years to master. They are never urgent and the easiest things to postpone.

(Especially if a new season of Walking Dead is on.)

But these are also the types of activities that, done day after day, lead to the highest quality of life and most pleasure long term. Not the acute, “OMG this is so fun” type of pleasure — but the more subtle, albeit equally exhilarating feeling of overarching satisfaction with one’s life.

These types of activities make you feel like you’re worth a damn. And that’s important. Because you are.

Pleasure versus fulfillment is the difference between spending your time and investing it. Or the difference between consuming and creating.

The time will pass anyway — but at the end of a lifetime, what will you have to show for it?
Some of us will have 100,000 hours of television, a leased Mercedes and a bunch of clothes we got sick of last year as evidence that we were here.

Others will have created a legacy that leaves the world a better place and makes a difference for people we’ve never even met.

    Which one will you be?

Jennifer Lopez, First Lady Michelle Obama And Myself On ‘Feeling Comfortable In Your Own Skin’

I won’t forget an episode of the last season of American Idol when one of judge Jennifer Lopez’s comments resonated with me. Reacting to a stellar performance, she said something to the effect of, “It’s all about feeling comfortable in your own skin.” She praised the contestant, and passed on a lesson to me that night as well.

Isn’t it all about feeling comfortable in our own skin? Certainly as social beings we feel the desire to be a part multiple social networks whether they are through dinner parties, work meetings, brunches, picnics, book clubs, or any context really. The message to feel assured about ourselves, our personalities and our impact on others is a truly important one, and one that we might take time to reflect on so we can cultivate the feeling. How we feel about ourselves can amplify or limit our enjoyment in life and, more significantly, is a feeling that can contribute to great self-esteem if we value ourselves properly. Our impact on others can be shaped tremendously with a helpful dose of self-value and self-esteem, strengthening our ability to contribute meaningfully and effectively in society.

When I hear good advice, I like to share it to help others, and Ms. Lopez’s words are a good example. I don’t know if she came up with the advice herself, but at the time she spoke them it did catch my attention.

A related strong piece of wisdom is the advice that First Lady Michelle Obama gave at the United State of Women’s Summit while being interviewed by Oprah. (View the interview @11:10.) She talked about self-value, and how the FLOTUS could not have done her job as First Lady as comfortably did she not have the self-value she’s had for herself for decades. While self-esteem is a concept we may feel we don’t have control over at times, self-value is not like that. We can influence our thoughts and perspective to shape a healthier self-value, which in turn can boost self-esteem. It is so important, especially in today’s society, that we treat ourselves better than ever because most others do not simply have the time to do so. We ought to care for and believe in our best traits and understand that being human means we will have difficulties presented as well.

Loving yourself is as important as every other way we care for ourselves, like eating and sleeping. Being narcissistic is different, as achieving balance in self-value is important, just like balance in everything else in life. However, if you need to reflect on why you should love yourself, take some time and do the soul-searching. Keep at those things which make you feel the most self-confident. Those habits and hobbies will likely reveal your biggest strengths. Remember, we are all so small in the bigger scheme of society and the world’s affairs, but within each one of us lies a universe of its own.

Here are three steps to follow if you want to develop greater self-value and, in turn, feel comfortable in your own skin:

    1. Reflect on your traits to develop greater self-value.

What traits do you have that you love the most? How do you demonstrate these traits daily? Take a moment to talk to loved ones and friends if this is too challenging on your own. Write your thoughts down if you like.

    2. Get out there and share your traits in social settings.

When you are an active member of your social networks, it can create a positive feeling, especially if you’re able to show off your best traits. You might be super thoughtful, kind, loving, or particularly self-confident and loving. Getting out there so that others get a taste of your character and mindset while you feel confident and positive can help you feel great about yourself.

    3. Be on the look out for great advice and continuous ways to improve yourself.

The journey to shaping our attitude and mindset will constantly shift based on life factors. Having the ability to adapt and be grateful in every circumstance will no doubt be a huge asset if you can. Love yourself, live gratefully, and dream big. Hopefully, with the ability to value your traits and personality, you can pretty much always, ‘feel comfortable in your own skin,’ and continue to shine through it all.
