Anthony Weiner Reportedly Caught In Yet Another Sext Scandal

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), whose political career ended in disgrace after two sexting scandals, was apparently unable to put down his phone.

Weiner, 51, who’s married to top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, allegedly sent lurid tweets and photos of his crotch to another woman, the New York Post reported. One of the raunchy selfies included his young son in the background.

The woman who received the former Congressman’s photos has reportedly been chatting with him online since January 2015. She sent screenshots of their conversations to the Post and spoke to the newspaper on the condition of anonymity.

Although Weiner admitted to the newspaper that he and the woman had “been friends for some time,” he claimed they had never met in person.

In 2011, Weiner resigned from Congress ― and became the fodder of late night comedians ― after he accidentally posted a sexually explicit image of himself on Twitter. Although Weiner attempted to revive his political career in 2013 by running for New York City mayor, he lost the election amidst a second sexting scandal (the one where he used the alias Carlos Danger).

Afterward, Weiner mostly dropped out of the public eye, giving only occasional interviews with the media. He announced that he was undergoing therapy and vowed to focus on being a better father.

“Being a dad, that’s my job,” Weiner said in May on the “Here’s The Thing With Alec Baldwin” podcast.

In recent years, Weiner opened a consulting firm, became involved in a nonprofit restaurant and acted in the Syfy movie “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!” This past spring, his sexual and political escapades were featured in the documentary “Weiner.”

11 Habits of Ridiculously Likeable People

2016-08-25-1472165418-1528300-11HabitsofRidiculouslyLikeablePeopleHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that being likeable comes from natural, unteachable traits that belong only to a lucky few–the good looking, the fiercely social, and the incredibly talented. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception.

When I speak to smaller audiences, I often ask them to describe the most likeable people they have ever worked with. People inevitably ignore innate characteristics (intelligence, extraversion, attractiveness, and so on) and instead focus on qualities that are completely under people’s control, such as approachability, humility, and positivity.

These qualities, and others like them, describe people who are skilled in emotional intelligence (EQ). TalentSmart research data from more than a million people shows that people who possess these skills aren’t just highly likeable, they outperform those who don’t by a large margin. Ninety percent of top performers have high EQs, people with high EQs make $ 29,000 more annually than people with low EQs, and a single-point increase in your EQ adds $ 1,300 to your salary. I could go on and on.

Being likeable is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence. Unlike innate, fixed characteristics, such as your intelligence (IQ), EQ is a flexible skill that you can improve with effort.

To help you improve your EQ, I did some digging to uncover the key behaviors that emotionally intelligent people engage in that make them so likeable.

1. They are genuine. Being genuine and honest is essential to being likeable. No one likes a fake. People gravitate toward those who are genuine because they know they can trust them. It is difficult to like someone when you don’t know who they really are and how they really feel.

Likeable people know who they are. They are confident enough to be comfortable in their own skin. By concentrating on what drives you and makes you happy as an individual, you become a much more interesting person than if you attempt to win people over by making choices that you think will make them like you.

2. They ask thoughtful questions. The biggest mistake people make when it comes to listening is they’re so focused on what they’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect them that they fail to hear what’s being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost. A simple way to avoid this is to ask a lot of questions. People like to know you’re listening, and something as simple as a clarification question shows that not only are you listening, you also care about what they’re saying. You’ll be surprised how much respect and appreciation you gain just by asking questions.

3. They don’t pass judgment. If you want to be likeable you must be open-minded. Being open-minded makes you approachable and interesting to others. No one wants to have a conversation with someone who has already formed an opinion and is not willing to listen.

Having an open mind is crucial in the workplace where approachability means access to new ideas and help. To eliminate preconceived notions and judgment, you need to see the world through other people’s eyes. This doesn’t require you believe what they believe or condone their behavior, it simply means you quit passing judgment long enough to truly understand what makes them tick. Only then can you let them be who they are.

4. They don’t seek attention. People are averse to those who are desperate for attention. You don’t need to develop a big, extroverted personality to be likeable. Simply being friendly and considerate is all you need to win people over. When you speak in a friendly, confident, and concise manner, you will notice that people are much more attentive and persuadable than if you try to show them you’re important. People catch on to your attitude quickly and are more attracted to the right attitude than what–or how many people–you know.

When you’re being given attention, such as when you’re being recognized for an accomplishment, shift the focus to all the people who worked hard to help you get there. This may sound cliché, but if it’s genuine, the fact that you pay attention to others and appreciate their help will show that you’re appreciative and humble–two adjectives that are closely tied to likeability.

5. They are consistent. Few things make you more unlikeable than when you’re all over the place. When people approach you, they like to know whom they’re dealing with and what sort of response they can expect. To be consistent you must be reliable, and you must ensure that even when your mood goes up and down it doesn’t affect how you treat other people.

6. They use positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation.

It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

7. They leave a strong first impression.
Research shows most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this you can take advantage of it to make huge gains in your likeability. First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Strong posture, a firm handshake, smiling, and opening your shoulders to the person you are talking to will help ensure that your first impression is a good one.

8. They greet people by name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. Likeable people make certain they use others’ names every time they see them. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet him. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation.

If you’re great with faces but have trouble with names, have some fun with it and make remembering people’s names a brain exercise. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask her name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep her name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see her.

9. They smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good as a result.

10. They know who to touch (and they touch them). When you touch someone during a conversation, you release oxytocin in their brain, a neurotransmitter that makes their brain associate you with trust and a slew of other positive feelings. A simple touch on the shoulder, a hug, or a friendly handshake is all it takes to release oxytocin. Of course, you have to touch the right person in the right way to release oxytocin, as unwanted or inappropriate touching has the opposite effect. Just remember, relationships are built not just from words, but also from general feelings about each other. Touching someone appropriately is a great way to show you care.

11. They balance passion and fun. People gravitate toward those who are passionate. That said, it’s easy for passionate people to come across as too serious or uninterested because they tend to get absorbed in their work. Likeable people balance their passion with the ability to have fun. At work they are serious, yet friendly. They still get things done because they are socially effective in short amounts of time and they capitalize on valuable social moments. They minimize small talk and gossip and instead focus on having meaningful interactions with their coworkers. They remember what you said to them yesterday or last week, which shows that you’re just as important to them as their work.

Bringing It All Together

Likeable people are invaluable and unique. They network with ease, promote harmony in the workplace, bring out the best in everyone around them, and generally seem to have the most fun. Add these skills to your repertoire and watch your likeability soar!

Please share your thoughts in the comment section, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

For Presidential Candidates, 70 is the new 45

by Dr. Mehmet Oz & Dr. Michael Roizen

Controversy blossomed this week surrounding the health of our presidential candidates. That’s because we’re heading into this fall’s presidential election knowing relatively little about the medical history of either major-party candidate, and at 68 and 70, respectively, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump would be among the oldest people ever elected to the office of the president. Ronald Reagan, the oldest so far, was 69 when he was elected to his first term, 73 for his second term, and 77 when he left office. Only 10 of our 43 presidents entered office older than 60.

For many of us, the health of the president is an important issue when casting our ballots. While we don’t and shouldn’t take someone’s age or health into consideration when hiring for a typical job, the role of the president is an extraordinary position. Health is also one of our nation’s most important issues, and a healthy president sets a better example for us all to follow.

Some say that in this election, the health of the candidates is even more important than ever, because of their chronological age. We understand this concern, because aging can definitely affect stamina and mental quickness. On average, we (kidneys, liver, heart, even bone mass, and brain functioning) decline 5 percent every 10 years. So by age 70, your IQ is, on average, 20% lower than at age 30. In addition, we have examined the medical records of all of the presidents since Teddy Roosevelt and found that after someone gets into the Oval Office, they age two years for every one year on the job.

But while the calendar age of Secretary Clinton and Donald Trump would traditionally qualify them as elderly, today we also know that a president’s real age is more important than his/her chronological age. Your real age is determined by your habits and environment. For those who engage in the healthiest habits and are in the healthiest environments, 70 truly is the new 45. As a result of improvements in public health and medicine, all Americans, on average, live much longer than when we elected our first president 227 years ago. Over just the last 100 years, average life expectancy has increased more than 20 years, from around 55 in 1916 to nearly 79 today.

These life expectancy numbers are typically based on averages, but no matter your political preference, everyone can surely agree that our presidential candidates are far from average in many ways. We know that social determinants, such as educational level and income, are among the most important factors for longevity. The more education you have, where you live, and your job correlate with how long you live and how healthy you are. According to research, women and men with 16 or more years of education (Secretary Clinton has 19 and Mr. Trump has 16) are expected to have an increase in life span as much as 8 and 13 years respectively. In addition, those in the highest income brackets (again, this includes both candidates) have been estimated to have a life expectancy about 14.6 years longer than those in the lowest income brackets. These social advantages suggest that both candidates are likely to have a longer life expectancy than most voters – a fact that we hope the winning candidate will address while in office so as to improve the health of everyone in our nation.

Fortunately, healthy habits in our control are even more important for our health than our social situation. Data from the nation’s biggest health studies, including the Nurse’s Health Study, the Health Professional’s Study, and the Medicare Studies suggest that chronic disease is reduced by 80-90% and cognitive function improved in people who engage in the “six healthy habits” and are up-to-date on their immunizations. The more of these healthy habits you have, the younger relative to your calendar age you are. We estimate that someone who has all six of these habits has the cognitive abilities of someone more than ten years younger than their chronological age. These six healthy habits include eating right, managing stress, being socially connected, being physically active, avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol, and getting enough sleep. While we don’t have perfect data on the candidate’s health and all of their habits, we can make some inferences from what we’ve seen in the media.

Just the act of actively campaigning for the past 16 or so months indicates that the candidates are able to tolerate substantial stress. They are both very social and connected to strong, supportive families and the people they meet every day. Secretary Clinton enjoys exercising regularly and Mr. Trump plays golf. We would bet that they also both get in a lot of steps pounding the pavement and shaking hands. We also know that neither candidate smokes nor drinks much, if any, alcohol. Now, according to reports in the media, when it comes to eating, Secretary Clinton (who tries to eat healthfully) may be doing a better job than Mr. Trump (who often eats fast food), and neither of them is getting much sleep. While we don’t have all of their data, it’s fair to say that they are both mentally sharper than the “average” person with their chronological age, and from a health perspective, likely fit to be president.

Social Town Planning

Social Town Planning

Many issues such as access for the disabled, childcare facilities, environmental matters, and ethnic minority issues are excluded from town planning considerations by planning authorities. This book introduces the concept of `social town planning’ to integrate planning policy and practices with the cultural and social issues of the people they are planning for. Part 1 provides background on the development of a social dimension to the predominantly physical, land use based, British town planning system. Part 2 investigates a representative selection of minority planning topics, in respect of gender, race, age and disability, cross-linked to the implications for mainstream policy areas such as housing, rural planning and transport. Part 3 discusses the likely influence of a range of global and European policy initiatives and organisations in changing the agenda of British town planning. Planning for healthy cities, sustainability, social cohesion, and equity are discussed. Part 4 looks at `the problem’ from a cultural perspective, arguing that a great weakness in the British system, resulting in ugly and impractical urban design, has been the lack of concern among planners with social activities and cultural diversity. Alternative, more culturally inclusive approaches to planning are presented which might transcend the social/spatial dichotomy, such as urban time planning. Concluding that the process of planning must change, the authors ague that the culture and composition of the planning profession must particularly change to be more representative and reflective of the people they are `planning for’, in terms of gender, race and minority composition.

White Lives Matter To Be Listed As Hate Group By Southern Poverty Law Center

White Lives Matter will soon be listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

SPLC said the status will be reflected in the next update of its “Hate Map,” which tracks the activities of hate groups around the country.

“I can’t speak to how many chapters will be listed, but it’s clear that the leadership of the group, the ends of the group ― it’s just a flat-out white supremacist group,” Heidi Beirich, director of the center’s Intelligence Report, told the Houston Chronicle. “The ideology behind it, the racist leaders, everything about it is racist.”

White Lives Matter made headlines earlier this month when the group sent armed protesters to an NAACP office in Houston, where they waved Confederate flags.

Their organizations and their people are shooting people based on the color of their skin,” White Lives Matter member Ken Reed told the Houston Chronicle at the time. “We’re not.”

However, the Anti-Defamation League said the protest was organized by the white supremacist organization Aryan Renaissance Society:

“During the August 21 protest, the ARS symbol, a lightning bolt and a runic symbol, was visible on the group’s ‘white lives matter’ banner and on white shirts worn by some of the dozen or so participants. Their message also included a sign reading ‘14 words,’ a reference to the most popular white supremacist slogan in the world: ‘We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.’

The SPLC said in a blog post that one of the leaders of White Lives Matter was Rebecca Barnette, a 40-year-old Tennessee woman “who is also vice president of the women’s division of the racist skinhead group Aryan Strikeforce.” Barnette was also allegedly involved in the National Socialist Movement, the country’s largest neo-Nazi group, SPLC said.

While those organizations are already known as hate groups, the addition of White Lives Matter will be new to the map.

“We are listing them because they are clearly white supremacists,” Beirich told VICE News. “Their motto should be ‘only white lives matter.’”

Although some called for Black Lives Matter to be listed as a hate group after the shooting deaths of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, that organization doesn’t hold supremacist or separatist views and its leaders have condemned violence.

The SPLC said in a blog post last month:

There’s no doubt that some protesters who claim the mantle of Black Lives Matter have said offensive things, like the chant ‘pigs in a blanket, fry ‘em like bacon’ that was heard at one rally. But before we condemn the entire movement for the words of a few, we should ask ourselves whether we would also condemn the entire Republican Party for the racist words of its presumptive nominee ― or for the racist rhetoric of many other politicians in the party over the course of years.

The next update to the “Hate Map” is expected in February.

This Wonderful Thing Called Our Twenties

I just dropped off an old friend at the airport and drove home as the sun was setting. It’s San Francisco, so it was perfect weather for my commute home. A song I really liked came on as I pulled away and there it was: my perfect life, right in front of me.

I’m 23, I’m struggling in the job market scene, and I’m constantly living in a state of unfamiliarity.

There’s nobody that can explain to you how life after college really feels. There’s nothing to compare it to. One day you’re with your friends and the weather is perfect and you’re all laughing about something stupid. The next day you’re getting chewed out by a boss or you see your friend getting married and you have an existential crisis.

This is our twenties.

And they’re a rollercoaster.

This section of our lives is the part we were always trying to get to, but most times now we end up wondering why.

Why does the world keep screwing with us so much? Why are we now so uncertain of things we used to be certain of? Why is there somebody shooting up a club? Why don’t we get the same respect that we show to others? Why aren’t things fair?

Then you run into an unforgettable day. You hike a mountain with friends and breathe in new air and sit on the side of a cliff wondering how in the hell you got there. What did you do to deserve a day like this? There’s suddenly nothing wrong.

Then you take a flight back to reality.

There’s a date that’s scheduled on Thursday with someone you really like, but you’re not certain they’re the one. Your parents give you a call and you talk about the usual. Your sister just got engaged. When did she get that old?

Most days are filler to get to those few hours where the universe ignites and you’re there, on the edge of figuring it all out.

It’s so real and so vibrant and so exciting, and then you’re suddenly driving home in the darkness.

We’re alone now.

We’re alone in the decisions that we make, which means we’re also alone when those decisions fall through in the worst way.

What should we do when we’re uncertain and the clock is ticking? Every choice seems so gigantic.

But that’s the power of our twenties. It’s finally up to us. The universe is hurling a lot of things our way, but it’s also poised to bow to our wishes.

Yes, there’s tough days. There’s moments when we snap and we wish that we were home and that we were ten years younger. But there’s also days where we’re sitting on the side of a mountain looking out at the earth, realizing that it’s ours for the taking.

Our twenties.

It’s our time to hurt, it’s our time to laugh, but most of all it’s our time to figure it all out. What should it all mean? Does it matter to figure it out right now?

Maybe you should go climb the mountain. Maybe you should call that old friend you’ve been ignoring. Maybe you should stare deeply into that person’s eyes and tell them they’re absolutely beautiful.

There’s no guide map now. There’s nobody to tell us where to go. But every decision that we make shows us who we are more and more until we slowly piece ourselves together into the person that we want to be.

This is our twenties. They’re scary, they’re fun, but sometimes they’re simply wonderful.

This Is What It’s Like To Try Out To Be A U.S. Open Ballperson

Serena Williams might be the champion of tennis, but there are other unsung heroes who are pushed to the brink of their athletic abilities each year at the U.S. Open, without whom the game could simply not go on.

They are, of course, the ballpeople, tasked with the ever important duties of grabbing tennis balls between rallies at what seem like record speeds. They have to constantly remain in precise position, all while trying to avoid being slammed by serves that can go over 150 miles per hour.

Back in June, I ― a person with slight athletic ability and even less tennis knowledge ― had the opportunity to try it out for myself. Before the real tryouts (which are open to the public) kicked off at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, I threw on one adorable (if not slightly too small) ballperson uniform and attempted my hand at what I thought would be a fun, easygoing experience.

Boy, was I wrong.

Cathie Delaney, assistant director of ballpersons for the U.S. Open, showed my lack of skill no mercy. Between running for the ball, throwing the ball and quite frankly being near the ball, I was winded after the brief tryout, much to my delight and not much to Delaney’s.

In honor of the U.S. Open’s opening night August 29, check out our live stream of the tryout to see if I made it to the big time.

Spoiler alert: I didn’t.

New UN S-G Must Realize That Climate Change Threatens Our World

The task facing the next United Nations Secretary-General will not be an easy one. The world seems to be teetering on the edge of multiple, interconnected crises including conflict in Syria, tensions around Ukraine, and disputes over water and land resource issues. All of this at a time when we are seeing the biggest movement of people since World War II.

In the public debates the candidates for the next UN Secretary-General have participated in, they’ve shown that they can list what will be in their in-tray, but few have acknowledged the common thread running through many of these crises and challenges: the impact of a changing climate. Any analysis that fails to acknowledge this as one of the key drivers to current and future global instability is a flawed one.

The evidence of this impact is becoming increasingly apparent. Whilst very few are saying that climate change is a direct cause of conflict, it is certainly increasing the likelihood. Last month research published by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research found climate disasters increase the chance of armed conflict, particularly in ethnically-divided nations. Climate change is already contributing to social upheaval and even violent conflict by making bad situations worse. In 2015, the National Academy of Sciences linked a prolonged drought in Syria in 2011 to climate change, and suggested the drought may have contributed to the start of the conflict and subsequent migrant crisis: The 2006-2011 drought was particularly severe and led to widespread crop failures, which in turn forced people to move within Syria into cities in search of work, increasing the tension and chance of conflict in urban areas. As always, there will be alternative views and whilst other analysis suggests the link may not be so straightforward, the new additions have certainly added momentum to the debate.

Unlike her fellow candidates, Christiana Figueres — a Costa Rican diplomat and former head of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change — not only recognises that climate change is increasingly one of the biggest threats that we face, she also understands that the security implications need to be addressed along with all the other threats to global stability and prosperity, rather than in isolation. She knows that without such an approach climate change promises to make many of our most complex crises — from migration to conflict, food shortages to terrorism — much harder to solve.

A Secretary-General prepared to integrate a response to the risk posed by climate change across the UN will have the best chance at delivering peace during these turbulent times. International security today is dependent on understanding the effects of climate change on people’s prosperity within states and relations between states.

Figueres has demonstrated that she is a shrewd diplomat and coalition builder at the top of her game. She picked up a broken UN climate talks after the failure of the Copenhagen Summit in 2009, and proved she could help states work together to achieve the Paris Agreement, the first of its kind to commit all countries to reduce their carbon emissions and transition to economies based on renewable energy. States that once saw little to agree on have, through her skill and dedication, found common ground and agreed a deal which was previously seen as impossible.

What’s more, as was often repeated at the World Humanitarian Summit in May, the scale and frequency of the crises that are hitting home have stretched the UN and the humanitarian apparatus to the breaking point. The UN needs reform. It needs to treat these crises holistically and not remain beholden to a siloed approach that gives rise to internal demarcation disputes. The UN has shown it can deliver multilateral deals — not just on climate but also the Sustainable Development Agenda, and the Sendai Risk Reduction Framework.

The 21st century is proving extremely challenging, with many threats to our global prosperity and well-being. Under the new Secretary-General, the UN will have to adapt to meet these challenges and the candidate the members of the Security Council choose to recommend to the General Assembly must be capable of delivering; Christiana Figueres is that candidate.

13 Questions That Will Change Your Life

2016-08-18-1471552531-5357259-13QuestionsThatWillChangeYourLifeHP.jpg

When things aren’t going quite the way you’d like them to, it’s often the result of not asking yourself the right questions. Some questions are hard to confront because you’re afraid you won’t get the answer you want, others because you really don’t want to know the answer.

But the best things in life don’t come easily, and turning away from life’s toughest questions is a sure path to mediocrity. I believe that Socrates said it best:

“The unexamined life isn’t worth living.”

Socrates’ observation also applies to business. When Eric Schmidt was CEO of Google, he famously said, “We run this company on questions, not answers.”

Life, like business, runs on questions, not answers. Let’s take a closer look at some of the tough questions we should be asking ourselves regularly.

1. How do people see me differently than I see myself?

Have you ever heard a recording of your voice and thought, “Is that what I really sound like?” Because of the way the sound of the voice travels through the human skull, we never hear ourselves the same way that everybody else hears us. The same is often true for the way we behave. We interpret our behavior in terms of how we think we come across, whereas everyone else sees the real thing. A 360° assessment is a great way to gain this perspective. It gathers feedback that is constructive, anonymous, and accurate. If you forego the 360 and solicit feedback in person, make certain you ask for feedback that is specific, avoiding broad questions and generalizations. For example, you’re more likely to get an honest and accurate answer to, “How well did I handle myself in the meeting when everyone disagreed with me?” than to, “Am I a good boss?” And be careful to show that you’re receptive to the feedback. If you flip out or get defensive every time somebody speaks their mind, they’re going to stop doing it.

2. What/whom did I make better today?

That’s another way of saying, “Leave things better than you found them.” Ending each day by asking yourself what or whom you made better is a great way to keep yourself grounded and focused on what really matters.

3. Am I being true to my values?

Do you ever get that nagging feeling that something is a little off in your life? This often happens when little behaviors creep up on you that violate your values. If spending quality time with your family is one of your primary values, but you keep staying late at work, there’s a conflict. If you want that nagging little voice to go away, you’re going to have to do something about it.

4. If I achieved all of my goals, how would I feel? What can I do to feel that way as I work to achieve them?

The ability to delay gratification in pursuit of your goals is one of the most fundamental prerequisites for success, but delaying gratification doesn’t have to mean being miserable until you cross that finish line. You can achieve more–and have more fun doing it–if you let yourself feel some of that pride and pleasure along the way.

5. What haven’t I taken the time to learn about?

It’s a big world out there, and it’s getting bigger all the time. Scientists have theorized that it once took 1,500 years for the accumulated knowledge in the world to double; now it only takes a year or two. Don’t get caught behind.

6. In what areas of my life am I settling?

When you settle, you accept less than you’re capable of. Sometimes we settle in dead-end jobs. Other times we settle for unhealthy relationships. If you don’t ask yourself where and why you’re settling, it’s hard to stop it.

7. What do I want my life to be like in five years?

Lewis Carroll once said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” The corollary is that, once you have your destination in mind, you can plan your route. Five years is the perfect timeframe: It’s not so far in the future that you can’t imagine yourself there, but it’s not so close that you can’t do anything about it.

8. What would I do if I wasn’t scared?

From a survival perspective, fear has its purpose. It’s what keeps us from sticking our hand in the washing machine or any of the million other things that could get us hurt or killed. But fear has a tendency to get carried away. Instead of keeping you safe, it keeps you from improving your life and living your dreams.

9. Who has qualities that I aspire to develop?

When people have qualities that you admire, it’s a great exercise to reflect on these qualities and think about ways that you can incorporate them into your repertoire.

10. What problem are we solving?

Have you ever been in a meeting and suddenly realized that not everyone was having the same conversation? Not because people were talking over each other, but because they had different ideas about the purpose of the discussion. Sometimes it helps to put the topic on the whiteboard when you’re having a meeting. This makes certain everyone knows why they’re there.

11. What’s stopping me from doing the things that I should be doing?

It’s easy to shrug your shoulders and say, “I don’t know what to do,” but that’s just an excuse. Most of the time, we know exactly what we should be doing; we just aren’t willing to move the obstacles out of the way.

12. Will you be my mentor?

It’s an intimidating question to ask, but few people will turn you down. Everyone likes being looked up to, and it feels good to share our knowledge with others.

13. What’s the most important lesson I’ve learned so far in life? Am I living that lesson?

Sometimes life lulls us back into complacency and we’re forced to learn a powerful lesson twice. The trouble with this is that it’s just as much of a rude awakening the second time around.

Bringing It All Together

Asking the hard questions can be extremely uncomfortable. But we don’t learn and grow by sticking with what’s comfortable.

What other questions should people be asking? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Why Does My Hip Click?

Snapping Hip
Snapping hip is an audible clicking or snapping sensation caused by hip movement that can be painful. There are a variety of reasons patients present with a clicking or snapping sensation in the hip. A click in the hip can be the result of the following: a labral tear, iliotibial band syndrome, psoas bursitis, psoas tendon snap, and arthritis of the hip. It is essential for physicians to understand each cause to provide an effective course of treatment.

Labral Tear
A labral tear is a common cause for clicking sensations in the hip joint. The labrum refers to the ring of cartilage surrounding the socket of ball-and-socket joints. The labrum of the hip is essential in providing stability to the joint. This same ring of cartilage can be found in the shoulder.

Labral tears can be the result of degenerative or traumatic processes. Degenerative labral tears can occur from repetitive motions or osteoarthritis. Traumatic labral tears can occur from injury or dislocation of the joint. Femoroacetabular impingement is a common cause of a labral tear. Impingement occurs when the proximal femur abuts the acetabulum with movement of the hip. This occurs especially in hip flexion. A patient with a labral tear will usually present with complaints of a clicking or a locking sensation in the joint. In addition, a patient will present with pain in the hip or groin, stiffness and decreased range of motion.

2016-08-26-1472230479-3420199-hip6.PNG

Diagnoses
To diagnose a labral tear, physicians will utilize a combination of physical examinations, imaging and diagnostic injections. MRI arthrograms are typically utilized to diagnose a labral tear, while injections are then used to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment for a labral tear can range from conservative modalities to surgical intervention. Conservative treatments include anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy and injection. If conservative treatment fails, arthroscopic surgery may be needed to debride or repair the tear and the impingement can be addressed at the same time.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome.
Iliotibial band syndrome is another common cause of snapping hip. The thickened iliotibial band snaps over the bony greater trochanter of the femur. The patient may develop trochanteric bursitis, adhesions, gluteus maximus inflammation or edema.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis of iliotibial band syndrome can be done by direct palpation of the greater trochanter. This can be accomplished by placing a patient on their side, while putting the hip into extension and rotation until a “pop” is heard or felt. The patient can reproduce the snapping and sometimes this moment is physically seen.

2016-08-26-1472230535-5500850-hip3.PNG

Ober’s Test
The Ober’s test is the best clinical examination for assessing the tightness of the iliotibial band. To perform the Ober’s test the patient will lay on their side with the unaffected leg on the bottom. The examiner will slowly abduct the leg with the knee in flexion and the hip in extension. When the iliotibial band is tight, the test is positive. In a positive test the patient will be unable to adduct the leg and the knees will not come together.

2016-08-26-1472230571-61357-hip4.PNG

Iliopsoas Tendon Snap
Iliopsoas tendon snap is the result of movement over the iliopectineal eminence. The iliopsoas tendon will snap over the pelvic brim. It is caused by inflammation of the bursa that lies between the front of the hip joint and the iliopsoas muscle or tendon. Diagnosis is usually difficult, the ultrasound or MRI may be normal or it may reveal fluid anterior to the hip joint (bursitis). An iliopsoas injection can be diagnostic. Abduction and external rotation and hearing the snap or the click of the hip will support this diagnosis.

2016-08-26-1472230606-4697293-hip2.PNG

Hip Arthritis
A click in the hip can also result from arthritis in the hip joint. Arthritis leads to the loss of cartilage between the head of the femur and the acetabulum. Without adequate cartilage, there is bone-on-bone interaction that causes pain, tenderness and inflammation of the hip joint. Patients will present with stiffness (limited movement), clicking in the hip joint, pain worsening with activity, and tenderness in the groin and hip. Physicians will utilize a combination of physical examinations and X-rays to identify loss of cartilage. Treatment for hip arthritis can be conservative or surgical. With severe arthritis a hip replacement will be needed to remove and replace the arthritic joint.

Donald Trump’s Black Voter Delusion

Michael K. Fauntroy is associate professor of political science at Howard University and the author of the book Republicans and the Black Vote. His next book, More than Just Partisanship: Conservatism and Black Voter Suppression will be published next year by New York University Press.

Donald Trump recently ramped up his Black voter outreach in the wake of poll after poll showing him failing to overcome a historically weak Democratic nominee in his bid for the White House. His Black outreach is equal parts condescension and bluster. He talked down to Black voters recently pointing out, inaccurately and out of context, that “you’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth are unemployed” before asking “What do you have to lose?” He also stated that he would get 95% of Black votes in his reelection campaign. Taken separately, these and other statements can charitably be said represent a deep misunderstanding of Black voters and Black life in America. Collectively, these statements reflect a deep delusion on the part of a candidate who has a history of race baiting.

Like most Republican nominees during the last eight decades, Trump has plenty of room for improvement. Credible recent polls show him with one or two percent support among Black voters. This is astonishingly low even among Republican nominees. If he ends up with two percent in November, then he would get half of what the 2008 nominee, John McCain, received in the historic election of Americas first Black President.

In the 22 presidential elections since 1936, for which even rudimentary polling was conducted, no Republican nominee has won a majority of Black votes. Only one, Thomas Dewey in 1944, received 40 percent, the high water mark in more than 75 years of presidential campaigns. Only three, Wendell Willkie, Dwight Eisenhower in 1956, and Richard Nixon in 1960, got between 30 and 39 percent. More recent Republican nominees have done consistently worse. In the last 10 elections, only Ronald Reagan in 1980 and Bob Dole in 1996 won 12 percent of the Black vote. Even setting aside the historic Barack Obama-induced headwinds facing John McCain in 2008 (four percent) and Mitt Romney in 2012 (six percent), GOP nominees since 1968 have largely been in the 10 to 15 percent range among African Americans. Trump is on the verge of a historically bad performance. After all, even Barry Goldwater won six percent of the Black vote in a treacherous 1964 campaign.

Trump’s “outreach” assumes that a few events in which he cynically mentions Black people is all that will be necessary to win over large numbers of African Americans to his cause. This strategy only works if Black voters are suddenly overtaken by amnesia and forget the many ways in which he has previously treated Black people. Unfortunately for Trump, there is a decades-long track record to show who he really is. He took out a full-page newspaper ad in April 1989 calling for a return of the death penalty in the wake of the infamous “Central Park 5.” The ad poured rhetorical gasoline on the anger many Whites felt over the five Black kids, the oldest of whom was 16, who were arrested for brutally beating and raping a White woman. They confessed under duress and without counsel present. Years later someone else confessed to the crime. DNA at the crime scene confirmed his guilt and the innocence of the falsely convicted. Trump has never apologized or acknowledged his inflammatory rhetoric during this period.

He joined up with racists when he became the most prominent among the far right birthers who repeatedly alleged that President Obama was not born in the United States. He elevated his profile among White racial conservatives by using his broad platform to traffic the false claims. Ignoring the evidence of Obama’s Hawaiian birth, he claimed that his investigators found that he was not born in the United States. He never produced evidence, just headlines. When proven false, rather than acknowledge his wrongness, he talked about the “service” he provided by keeping the issue in the news. Even now he cannot bring himself to acknowledge that he was wrong on all the facts about Obama’s birthplace.

The birth certificate foolishness, moreso than anything else he has said or done during the campaign, has made him radioactive in the Black community. Even Black people who are lukewarm to Obama understand the racist undercurrent of birtherism. They also understand that Trump led the charge in stoking the flames of birtherism. Questioning the nationality of an obviously native-born American, after a 2008 campaign that would have been stillborn if he were ineligible to serve, was Trump’s attempt to deligitimize the first Black President. Black people understood that then and remember it now.

His campaign is replete with other racial missteps and dog whistles. Since announcing his presidential bid, he has consistently tweeted or retweeted White supremacist conspiracy theories, erroneous statistics regarding Black crime, and seemingly encouraged the physical attacking of Black protestors at his rallies. Let’s also remember that David Duke, former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, has repeatedly spoken very highly of Trump. Duke cited Trump as the inspiration for his decision to run for the U.S. Senate this year.

Any campaign that is serious about outreach to African Americans would at least do the following. First, it would include African Americans in significant decision making campaign positions. Second, it would advance policy proposals that reflect respect for and understanding of Black life. Third, it would constantly speak with an inspirational voice that encourages not demonizes. Fourth, it would advertise in Black media outlets and contract with Black vendors. More importantly than all this, serious outreach would be timely, not something seemingly done as an afterthought. Trump has failed on all counts. He has no significant African Americans in serious positions (No, Omorosa doesn’t count!). He has made no policy proposals that show an understanding of Black issues. A speech given barely more than three months before the election is not timely. There has been no inspirational rhetoric and no evidence of significant Black media or vendor engagement.

Donald Trump won the Republican nomination by swimming in the rotten river of racial stereotypes and invective. Those now talking about his pivot to a more presidential general election mode would do well to remember that Trump has been around. And Black people know him well enough that a few speeches here and there won’t change anyone’s mind.

Thought-Provoking Questions

Often, when I am booked for lectures or radio and television interviews, I am provided questions in advance to help me prepare. Some of the questions are provocative, the kind that make me stop and think. So much so, I am sharing a few here with my replies.

1. What are three principles you live by?
a) “Identify the fear and then go there.” Usually I’m afraid because it is something I have never done before, and so I figure I will at least learn something new. I always ask myself: What is the worst-case scenario? If it’s one I can deal with, I go for it.
b) “Not everything worth doing is worth doing well.” Being stuck striving for perfection will not allow you to move on. For me, this pertains to writing. It is never finished and can always be improved upon. But at some point, it must be abandoned. Of course, this does not apply to everything; be sure to use discernment.
c) “Maintain an open mind.” I try to not be judgmental or assume that I know best. I listen and attempt to understand other points of view, seeing them in the contexts of culture and personality. When presented with a new opportunity, I ask myself: Will I learn something?

2. Do you believe nature or nurture has more impact?
People are born with specific tendencies; some children are shy, some are outgoing. This is a natural component of our genes, but then life experiences also impact our brains. Successes can reinforce behavior while failures discourage future attempts. So it is both. First it is nature, then nurture. Both have an equal influence.

3. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
I wish I had not cared so much about what other people thought of me. As women, we try to please others more than necessary. Speak the truth as often as possible and be willing to be disliked, but respected.

4. What did you wish to be when you were a child?
My childhood dream was to be a poet. I won a poetry contest for a poem I wrote when I was eight. This early success inspired me to continue writing poems, which I still do today.

5. What role does luck play in success?
Obviously, luck plays a part–you have to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people. However, success is also “opportunity meeting preparation.” I am always scanning my environment to look for ways to make a contribution and a difference.

6. What are the barriers to female leadership?
“MEN!” There is still gender discrimination, both conscious and unconscious, even by well-meaning men. Our culture continues to be dominated by male values, and, in the majority of cases, even when shown the same resume with a male or female name, men are chosen over women for both promotions and as new hires.

7. What was your biggest challenge?
a) Acceptance. As the only woman on the faculty of a business school, the first woman in a Rotary Club, the only female consultant in all-male organizations, I faced issues of acceptance. I did not try to blend in, as I knew this was not possible, so I stood out by wearing red suits, sitting on the arms of chairs to make me look taller (I am barely 5 feet tall).
b) A close second was being ignored–not only feeling invisible, but, also, not heard, and (when earned) not rewarded.

8. What changes in the workplace would you like to see?
I would like to see flexible working hours as a norm at work. This would permit time off not only for child-related needs, but, also, for the increasing needs of aging parents. Men must be provided with the same opportunity to take an equal share of these responsibilities without negative consequences in the workplace. What do you attribute your success to?
The willingness to ask the first question, using an assertive voice, looking others in the eye while conversing, giving credit when credit is due, looking and sounding confident (even when I do not feel that way), being well-prepared by knowing the agenda and relevant facts, and lastly, believing in myself.

9. What are the three rules you live by?
a) First of all, have fun. b) Do no harm. c) Be as helpful to as many people as possible.
I am urging you, my readers, to do the same. Think of each question as it relates to you, your values, philosophies, experiences, your life overall. Take time to answer these questions honestly and you might gain new insights–perhaps discover some unconscious motivations.

Trump’s Doctor Has An Amazing Explanation For That Bizarre Medical Report

Donald Trump’s personal physician told NBC News that he wrote a now-infamous medical report about the candidate in just five minutes.

Dr. Harold Bornstein, a gastroenterologist who has been Trump’s doctor for more than three decades, released a brief note last December declaring the reality TV star would be “the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency.” The four-paragraph letter, which billed Trump’s health as “astonishingly excellent,” was far less detailed than medical reports traditionally released by presidential candidates.

In an interview with NBC airing Friday, Bornstein said he spent “five minutes” on the letter while a car sent by Trump waited for him outside his office in Manhattan.

“I get rushed and I get anxious when I get rushed, so I try to get four or five lines done as fast as possible,” Bornstein explained. “In a rush, I think some of those words didn’t come out exactly the way they were meant.”

The doctor stood by his assessment of the reality TV star’s wellness.

“His health is excellent, particularly his mental health,” he said.

He also defended the claim that Trump would be the healthiest president in history.

“I like that sentence to be quite honest with you, and all the rest of them are either sick or dead,” he said.

Watch the interview above.

Bornstein and his bizarre note have come under scrutiny again as Trump and his campaign surrogates have floated conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton’s health. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow pressed Trump campaign manager Kellyane Conway on the issue during an interview Thursday.

“If he was elected, Donald Trump would be the oldest person to ever be sworn in as president,” Maddow said. “Whether or not he’s going to try to make Hillary Clinton’s health the issue, doesn’t he owe it to the American people to release an actual medical report, a more credible, more complete statement?”

Conway said “perhaps” he should release more information.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

A Gift For You: Walk In The Woods Meditation

2016-08-25-1472151034-8505504-WalkintheWoods.JPG
After decades of practicing meditation, four years of teaching happiness meditation classes and workshops, and now leading weekend retreats, I finally wrote my own guided meditation, “A Walk in the Woods.” Being in nature makes us happy, but it isn’t always possible to physically be outside drinking up the sights, sounds, and smells of a wooded trail. We can, however, savor the forest sensations mindfully by taking the time to mentally create or recreate that experience in as much detail as possible.

I was inspired by the local Trails Committee and by the transformative Helen Keller essay, Three Days to See. With gratitude to them, I offer the following meditation to you. Please make it your own. I’ve based the meditation on a summer walk in the Vermont woods, but your walk may be in the fall, spring or winter, on a real or imaginary trail. Create or recreate the experience that best suits you. The following is more a series of suggestions than a road map.

A Walk in the Woods

I invite you to start by easing into your meditation practice. With your eyes closed, let your breath out with an audible sigh. Do this several times if you like. Take a moment to notice all the places your body is in contact with the floor, chair, or cushions. Appreciate the support of the furniture and the building you are in, as well as the strength of the earth, making it safe for you to relax into your meditation time. Next, in an easy gentle fashion, focus on your breath, for a few minutes, until you feel ready to proceed. Take as much time with this transition as you want.

When you are ready, imagine you are at the trail head, ready to step in among the trees. Before you begin your walk, take time for gratitude. You may be grateful to have an able body. You might thank those who built the trail, or the landowners who share their property with the public. Perhaps your gratitude is for the weather, or for a strong pair of sneakers and good socks. What are you grateful for? Again, take your time. There is no need to hurry.

Remember to breathe.

Now, stepping into the woods, where do your feet land? What does the trail look like? Are there trail blazes or other markers on the trees? Who made them? Are there roots or rocks you might stumble over? Fallen branches? Are ferns or maybe even poison ivy growing near the trail? Is it a sunny day? What kinds of patterns does the play of light through the tree canopy make? Look around, what can you really see?

When we practice mindfulness, we can try to use all our senses. Right now, for example, what do you hear in your own little forest? Maybe leaves crunching underfoot? Or birds — is there a variety of bird calls if you really listen? Is it a still day, or is a breeze blowing? What does that sound like? Other animals? Insects whirring by your ear or chirping from afar? Maybe even traffic or construction noises off in the distance? Mindfulness is about more than appreciating beauty — it is, deeply observing what truly is.

Still breathing?

What does the air smell like? Did it rain recently? Are there rotting logs nearby? Do you smell your own shampoo, or toothpaste? Maybe there are flowers, or berries — do you want to lean in and breathe in their aroma?

And touch — is the air on your arms and face cool from the shade, or is it a hot sultry day even in the woods?

Even taste — did you bring a water bottle along? What does the water taste like? Any leftover meal flavors still lingering in your mouth? Did you pick a berry to eat? Was it sweet, sour, overripe?

Breathing deeper now, and looking more carefully around you. You’re surrounded by trees, but what species? Have any blown over, from the wind or maybe lightning? What bark do you see around you? Patterns? Growths on trees? Any holes in the trees? Perhaps holes made by animals, or perfect for animals to crawl into. And of course the leaves, or pine needles — different shapes, various shades of green? Are there also browns, and reds — trees in distress, or maybe autumn is coming on. It’s time to see the trees themselves, not just the forest. Are there any very old trees? Or very young ones? Any competing for the sunlight? What else?

Where would we be without trees? Can you feel gratitude for them?

Still remembering to breathe, turn now to the rocks and stones. Do you see ledge, or quartz? What sizes — boulders? Pebbles? Do you have to climb over any rocks? Are they moss-covered? Sharp, rounded? Maybe you can even spot one that is heart shaped.

Now we’re walking next to a mountain brook. Is your brook full and flowing forcefully? Maybe it just rained? Or is it late summer, with only a trickle? Pause and put your hand in. How cold is it? What does the brook sound like? What patterns do you see, in the way the water falls, and on the rocks below the surface? Linger by the brook as long as you’d like.

When you’re ready, notice that the trail is going up hill. What are the sensations in your muscles? Are you winded? Sweaty? Thirsty? How is your body doing on this hike? Or is it more of an easy going walk for you? Even on this mental journey, can you listen to your body’s experience?

In this moment, we’ve stepped out of the woods into a meadow. It may be sunny, or overcast. Is it hotter? Or is there a wind blowing, making your skin cooler? Looking up, what do you see in the skies? Have the sounds in the meadow changed from those in the woods? And sights — perhaps here you might see butterflies. What else is different on this part of the walk?

Finally we’ve arrived at an overlook, where conveniently there’s a bench to sit on and savor the view. What do you see? A lake in the distance? Mountains? A city? Is the view awe-inspiring? Does the larger vista give you a sense of place in the world, maybe putting your own cares in perspective? Can you pay attention to your feelings as well as the view? Just accepting your feelings, not trying to change them or judge them in any way.

Spend as long as you want sitting on the bench, taking in whatever is present for you in this moment.

Finally, let’s end this meditation the way we began: with gratitude. Grateful perhaps for beauty, for public policies that have preserved park land, for your own self to take this time to flex your mindfulness muscles and nurture your connection with the natural world. Who and what are you grateful for?

When you are ready, open your eyes and gently return to your regularly scheduled programming.

This Morning I Met
And Old Friend Returned
The Greed That Had Brought Him
The Trees That Had Burned …

He Carries A Message
So Bright And So Clear
Whatever Our Actions
Effects Will Appear …

In Kindness We Shower
Much Joy And Much Smiles
In Sharing Our Happiness
We Lessen Our Trials …

Compassion When Lacking
We Seek For Our Own
Without Ever Thinking
Our EGOs Have Grown …

Without Ever Knowing
No Sense Of This Greed
That Just Overwhelms Us
Polluting Our Seed …

Of Loving And Living
As Brothers In Tow
On Journeys Alongside
In Tandem To Flow …

But Ignorance Being
So Strong In Our Minds
Not Heeding The Call
Not Seeing How Blind …

So On This Very Morning
Through Grey Heavy Mist
So Deep In My Heart
My Prayer In Gist …

If Only Awareness
We Somehow Could Raise
Then Maybe Our Lives
Would Be Better Dear Haze ….

Zero to Sixty: The Motorcycle Journey of a Lifetime

Zero to Sixty: The Motorcycle Journey of a Lifetime

Nearing sixty, diagnosed with heart disease and feeling his mortality, Gary Paulsen buys his first Harley-Davidson and rides from his home in New Mexico to Alaska-and from the present into his past, through the landmarks of a singular life. Paulsen’s journey is peopled with familiar faces, from the tough cop who saved him from juvenile delinquency to the prostitute whose career advice stopped him from quitting the army. And the work he does while on his bike-the work of mapping his life to find meaning-is of a piece with the pure sweat and muscle of youthful days spent on farms in Minnesota, or at the bottom of septic tank pits in Colorado, or wrangling dogsleds through the Alaskan wilderness. Amid the silence and beauty of running the road on his Harley, Paulsen celebrates the comforts of hard work, the thrill of challenge met bravely, and the peculiar joys of life lived to its fullest.

Why We Need To Make Space For Quiet Teachers

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

As the ice-cold applesauce poured over my head, I kept telling myself that it was for the kids. My humiliation was their gain. I would be the cool, hip teacher who was willing to embarrass himself instead of the stodgy taskmaster with high standards.

But after the completion of the all-school rally, in which several teachers and I agreed to be slimed with applesauce by students who met specific academic goals, I just felt sticky, gross, and humiliated. This is how I was going to inspire and encourage the next generation?

I know now that attempt to be cool and hip was utterly useless. My teaching and interactions with students were none the better for participating in such sophomoric stunts. In fact, for the students in my class, it was more startling than supportive, particularly for the quiet, thoughtful ones who had bonded with me because they had finally found a teacher to whom they could relate. I was a safe space—a teacher who wouldn’t constantly nag them to “be more social” or pair them up with the struggling students to push them through their work when the quiet ones had finished their own. They were happy to do well, participate when needed, and carry on with being good students; they felt comfort in having found a quiet role model in me. My departure from my quiet self shocked them.

A larger push for collaboration

Sadly, such quiet students and teachers won’t be left alone much longer. There’s a growing movement in education to turn teachers into performers and students into non-stop collaborators. This is the effect of the Extrovert Ideal. Teachers are increasingly expected to be not just knowledgeable about content and good at the art and science of teaching but also outgoing and exciting on stage. It’s the Ron Clark method run amok: in meeting after meeting, I’d constantly hear the need to excite students with learning. Unfortunately, that meant entertaining them, which doesn’t always go hand in hand with appealing to their intellect.

Every couple of weeks a YouTube video goes viral of a teacher dancing with their class orperforming a hip hop routine, which is supposed to show how well the students learned the content and bonded with their teacher. The problem is that sometimes learning isn’t that exciting. You may not have enjoyed grammar rules or algebraic problem solving, but for such disciplines, persistent focus is good for the mind. Deliberate practice and the road to mastery can be thrilling, but not for the entertainment value.

Oftentimes, the best teachers are exactly the opposite of those dancers above. Think of the patient but firm and knowledgeable sage who may have guided you to a breakthrough when you were interpreting the events of history, struggling to understand a challenging piece of literature, or trying to interpret data in the lab. And even if you’re an extrovert, you may have come to value that time alone to think through a problem. As has been noted, the best and most innovative thinking often comes to us when we are alone.

A tough road for quiet students

The outlook isn’t bleak just for quiet teachers. Introverted students are pushed more and more towards group work and collaboration throughout the school day. Movements like the flipped classroom and blended learning encourage students to constantly find a solution together. Group writing, problem solving, and presentations are the future. Yes, these play a part in the world of work. However, such demands will leave our quiet students exhausted by the end of the day. And quiet teachers will be forced to facilitate a nonstop parade where no one will learn the ability to take time to reflect.

This is unfortunate because introverts bring a lot of good to the teaching profession: we value deep and meaningful conversations and content. Tackling a complex math problem after patiently and silently assessing the problem yourself causes the learning to stick far more than chatting with a partner about what methods to employ. And everyone has been in that group where a couple of people struggle through the work while trying to wrangle the others to stay on task. Introvert teachers cherish taking and granting quiet time to think—something that students are being robbed of in the push for working with groups and partners. Worst of all, quiet students face little autonomy as more lessons are designed to elevate the Extrovert Experience. Parents of quiet children may have to watch out for social burnout or even consider a different placement if things become too overwhelming.

What are quiet teachers to do?

Whether teacher or student, an introvert finds it tough enough to be in today’s classroom. Even when you value your students, want the best for them, and have structured your classroom to include both quiet and group activities, there’s a small relief at sending them off at the end of the day. But if everything moves to a model that requires a teacher to be on stage and pushing conversation all the time, the job may be untenable for those with a quiet temperament.

Quiet teachers will have to find ways to carve out time for themselves when they can even if it means declining lunch invites or using that rare prep time to reflect on their practices. If it comes down to it, have a ready-made list of alternative obligations in your mind to ensure you get the quiet time you need: you may need to catch up on grading, plan for a parent conference, or finish up an independent study packet for a student about to go on vacation. In a profession where being social is a significant part of the day, you have to allow yourself moments to catch your breath. There’s also value in just being upfront with those with whom you work: people can be surprisingly understanding if you tell them that you just need a little time alone to recharge.

Yet, there’s also value in seeking out fellow introverted teachers as a way to build camaraderie and generate new ideas. Additionally, a tiny drop of rebellion is sometimes a good thing: bucking the extrovert trend by building in reflective time for students will not only benefit the introverts in class but provide some needed thinking time for everyone.

Extroverts certainly deserve the ability to interact with one another and engage in collaborative efforts during the school day. It’s not that this shouldn’t be a component of education. It’s just the scale is tipping profoundly in one direction. Forcing introverted kids and teachers to live as extroverts throughout the day would be the equivalent of asking all the extroverts to take a vow of silence. Finding the right balance and meeting everyone’s needs is the right approach, which is what education is supposed to be about.

Donald Trump Spoils Ann Coulter’s ‘In Trump We Trust’ Book Launch

Ann Coulter’s new book is called “In Trump We Trust,” but the conservative pundit might already be regretting that title.

There’s nothing Trump can do that won’t be forgiven,” she wrote in her book. “Except change his immigration policies.”

Trump did just that on Wednesday night with a plan to offer legal status to undocumented immigrants, an announcement that came the very same night Coulter held her book launch party.

She did not look like she was in a forgiving mood:

At first, Coulter was ready to offer excuses

It’s just rhetoric, but it’s still annoying,” she told The Hill. “I think he panicked and he had to say [it] … I don’t think he is softening. I mean the big thing is the wall.”

But later on Twitter, Coulter tore into the policy, comparing it to previous offers that come conservatives have dismissed as amnesty.

Needless to say, Coulter’s critics seized on the opportunity:

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. Please include name (if organization please include organization and contact name),mailing address, designate Spanish or English, amount of cards requested, and telephone number.

American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

We Must Learn to Tell Narratives That Make Us Better – Not Divide Us

By Bruce Janz
UCF Forum columnist

Every four years we turn to our TVs and online sites to cheer on competitors vying for supremacy in an arena where the rules are often unclear and scandal is rife. We hope for an uplifting narrative that shows the best of who we can be, which gives us all something to strive for, but more often than not the narrative degenerates into stories that divide us.

No, I’m not talking about the presidential race. I’m talking about the Summer Olympics. And the narratives I’m interested in are not the ones created by the athletes themselves, but rather by the media.

The Nielsen ratings for this year’s Olympics were down about 17 percent from the London Games in 2012. There are many possible reasons – Americans might prefer watching the games in another English-speaking country; people are watching on screens that Nielsen has a harder time tracking; interest in the Olympics among younger viewers has been waning; television watching in general has declined, especially among younger viewers.

NBC has the contract for Olympic coverage, both summer and winter games until 2032, to the tune of $ 12 billion. And it has contracts guaranteeing to advertisers a household percentage rating in the high teens during prime time. It averaged a 15.4 rating, lower than hoped for, although the night that Usain Bolt won gold in the 100 meters and Simone Biles won gold in the vault, the rating went up to 17.4.

Ratings are obviously about money, but I am more interested in the kinds of narratives that seem to draw those ratings. In the United States we love to see stories of those overcoming personal challenges or hardship to win. We generally love to see winners win more, at least if we like them as people – that is if they are great characters.

NBC’s strategy for coverage has been controversial for some. It has emphasized the human drama, even the reality-show nature of the competitions, as opposed to the sports themselves. Scandal sells, as does a recognizable cast of characters fitting defined roles.

They have been criticized for diminishing the significance of the successes of women and racial minorities. These narratives, in other words, can have an inertia to them, and can be slow to change to recognize new characters and new audiences. Simone Manuel’s gold medal in the 100 meter freestyle swimming event is a narrative full of significance, but only if we recognize that it happened against the background of racial exclusion in the United States.

Mount Olympus was where the gods of the ancient Greeks lived. More importantly, it was the focal point for their myths. We think of myths as stories that aren’t true, but in fact, myths are stories that make sense of our world, that help us to give a narrative to our world. They help to tell us who is friend and who is foe, what happens if we stray too far from the accepted practices of our people, and how the world is put into the order it has. We might think that we now have science, and so we don’t need these myths. But in fact we now just tell myths about science, as well as about everything else.

These myths we have are not just hard-wired into our culture. They are repeated over and over in different ways, and that makes them seem natural, but what they really are is familiar and comforting. In a world of uncertainty, it is good to see Michael Phelps and Simone Biles do exactly what we expected they would do.

But being open to new narratives, even ones that do not fit our comfortable patterns, are absolutely essential. Simone Manuel’s medal brings up narratives of race in the United States. Non-African-Americans must find space for those narratives as well, not just as another gold medal but as a triumph over racial barriers.

For the first time ever, the International Olympic Committee decided to honor the competitive spirit of refugees by allowing them to compete without a country. We must be able to honor their ability to rise above their circumstances, but then also include in the narrative the question of why these capable people ended up as refugees in the first place, and how our refugee policies could improve the lives of those like them. We need to be open to Muslim women competing in hijabs – their athleticism is the real story.

So Gabby Douglas didn’t hold her hand over her heart during the national anthem. There is no rule, and many other athletes didn’t do it at other times. But there was a narrative, a myth about what makes a real American, and for some people, at least, her little action in that moment was enough to question her loyalty. Years of dedication on her part apparently meant nothing in comparison to that action.

Our narratives define us, but we have to do better on telling which ones make us better and which just diminish us.

And, we have to do better on listening and hearing new narratives, those that matter to others around us, rather than just fitting their stories into the ones we already have. We’re all richer when we can empathize with these stories.

This Is The Thing That Caregivers Fear Most

When someone you love falls seriously ill, your first instinct is to immerse yourself in their healing. You do your best. You take every step with them; spend hours at their hospital bedside, whole afternoons waiting for them to be seen by doctors, endless hours at rehab centers watching them relearn to walk, to speak, to use the toilet on their own again. And while you are doing this, studies have shown that there is an excellent chance you are ignoring your own health, your own job, your own life. Caregiving takes over everything. But you do it. You serve each bowl of homemade chicken soup as if it were the miracle cure that will make your patient whole again.

At least that’s how it is in the beginning. Sometimes as a caregiver, you get lucky. Your patient recovers and with that comes the return of some semblance of your pre-caregiving life. Other times though, things get worse, and not better. The care you must give burrows deeper, becomes more medically complicated to manage. Problems beget other problems. Diagnoses change, test results reveal new issues. Once you step on the medical treadmill, there is no way to slow the damn thing down. Each doctor’s visit brings more trips to the pharmacy, more tubes and needles for you to learn how to use. More procedures for you to master so you can do them at home. You have more things to remember. You make lists and then lose them. The dark precipice that you are trying to pull your patient back from just keeps widening and one day it becomes clear that ultimately you are powerless and are going to lose this war. That’s aging for you: It always wins in the end.

But as any caregiver who is being honest will tell you, the scariest part is not when defeat starts to creep in around the edges. It’s when it doesn’t and you start asking yourself “how much longer can I do this?” It’s the status quo and the possibility that this is my new normal that destroys me.

I am a relative newbie to caregiving. My husband’s kidneys decided to stop working in May. He spent a month in the hospital and then was discharged home to my care. We are among the lucky ones. We have decent insurance, a teenager who has helped all summer with the driving, and I have the world’s most understanding boss. But I still want to know: When will this be over? I am the kid in the backseat of the car asking when we will get there.

I feel trapped in a theater being forced to watch a bad movie. I want it to end already so I can just go home. I consider just getting up and leaving because I know the movie won’t be getting any better. But I won’t. I just can’t. And I feel selfish for even thinking these thoughts. After all, it’s not me walking around with an open dialysis port in my chest; not me who will never again be able to eat my favorite foods; not me who feels so weak and tired that I sometimes need my child’s help to stand up from the couch.

But actually, it is me too. Ask any caregiver and they’ll tell you we are the invisible patients ― the ones whose needs are neglected, whose pain goes untreated, whose job it is to be cheerful and keep the family train running on time while we die a little more inside each day.

In my new role, I’ve met many military wives and others who are caring for spouses or parents. I can’t tell who has it harder: the ones who love their patients or the ones who don’t. I truly can’t imagine doing what I do for someone I didn’t love and care about. And yet I’ve met some women who are caregivers to the fathers who abused them. There are even a few who take care of their ex-husbands. Nobody deserves to die alone, one told me. I’m not sure I believe that but I do marvel at how she manages.

Me? I take it one day at a time. What I use to regard as problems I now see as mere inconveniences. I could stand a little more time to myself and without question I’ve fallen into the group of caregivers who wish their patients would simply try harder ― try harder to get well, try harder to appreciate us, try harder to understand that our best may not be enough but it remains our best.

Formerly serious and responsible adults go on shopping sprees for toys and baby clothing, smile incessantly, pull out photo albums that they “just happen to have” with them, and proudly display baby seats in their cars. Grandparents dote on their grandchildren, and grandchildren love them back with all their hearts. This new book includes the best stories on being a grandparent from Chicken Soup’s extensive library. Everyone has experienced the special ties between grandparents and grandchildren – the unlimited love, the mutual admiration and unqualified acceptance. Grandparents and grandchildren will enjoy these lovingly written stories written by grandparents about their grandchildren and by grateful grandchildren about their grandparents. The book is set in larger print for easier reading.

Stephen Colbert’s ‘Tinfoil Hat’ Segment Explains GOP Conspiracy Theories

Donald Trump’s fear that the election could be rigged ― and Karl Rove’s new assessment of Hillary Clinton’s health ― prompted “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert to give us the lowdown on conspiracy theories.

On Wednesday, he introduced “Stephen Colbert’s Tinfoil Hat,” and it’s a segment brought to you by Reynolds Wrap: “Keeping government signals out of your brain since 1999.”

Colbert gave Rove (and Fox News’ Megyn Kelly) the business and got to the bottom of Clinton’s “secret illness” by investigating the spelling of her name. You’ll have to watch for the big reveal.

Then the paranoia fest really accelerated.

“Bowling balls and electrical outlets both have three holes,” he said. “But for some reason you’re not supposed to put your fingers in one of them or your penis in either of them. What do they not want us to experience?”

We’d love to hear Trump’s and Rove’s explanation.

Two Keys Why You Don’t Receive & How to Shift It!

Have you ever wondered why you struggle receiving the things you want? I see this a lot in my coaching practice and with my students. In fact, I would say that receiving is one of the key issues most people face. I would like to share with you some thoughts that might help you break out of this painful cycle.

Here are the two core reasons I’ve seen over and over again that shut people down to receiving:

    1. We are brought up to believe that receiving is wrong. For some, this belief stems in religion, and for others it begins in the home.

There is a tendency in religion to push the belief that being of service means you must deny yourself. In other words, don’t receive. But when you live by this belief, you shut down to taking the time to go within and connect to God. This is where you get the guidance you need to live life in the flow with grace and ease.

Even if your family wasn’t religious, you might have been brought up in a home in which your mom and dad gave themselves up to take care of your needs. They set the example that it wasn’t okay to receive. This is why it’s so important for parents to love themselves. They don’t realize that they are perpetuating a cycle of pain for their kids to grow up and do the same.

    2. Feeling bad about one’s self is the second reason most people don’t receive. If you have beliefs, whether conscious or hidden, that tell you something is wrong with you or that you have to act a certain way to receive, you’ll stay shut down to having miracles show up. This is why it’s so important to do the inner work of cleaning up subconscious beliefs. As you chip away at each of them and raise your Worthiness Quotient to inner abundance, you attract outer abundance and miracles.

I share a story of Cassie in my book, The Enlightened Mom, and her awakening to the importance of receiving. Cassie had attended my weekly live Enlightened Mom class, focusing on helping the ladies release subconscious beliefs so they could finally love themselves unconditionally and open up to receive. From the very first session, most of the moms were having breakthroughs and seeing miracles show up in their daily lives. But Cassie was different. She was mired in the negativity of her mind and really struggled with receiving.

For the last session of our class, we went to a local bookstore and sat on the patio. I invited the ladies to take a moment and go within to get grounded and connected to God before going into the store. Their mission was to allow God to guide them and to open up to receive a message.

Cassie was the first one back to the patio! With tear-filled eyes and joy that was palpable, she shared the incredible messages she received, one after the other from the pages of a book she had been guided to pick up. Cassie exclaimed, “I get it now! I used to ask God for guidance and would get so angry because I never got answers. Now I realize the messages were always there. All I had to do was give myself permission to open up and receive them!”

Cassie had been mired in false beliefs about receiving. She gradually chipped away at some of those beliefs during our class. But it wasn’t until that day at the bookstore that she finally realized a huge truth:

You are the one who determines whether you receive.

    2016-08-24-1472065296-5598401-15278638_s.jpg

Are you like Cassie was? Are you shut down to receiving the love, guidance and support you seek to make life a joyful flow?

If your answer is yes, it is time to look within. Do you have religious programming that says to be of service you must not receive? Or did you grow up in a family in which your parents put themselves on the backburner, giving you an example that this is love?

To be able to give freely, you must learn to receive. You can’t truly be of service if you’re coming from an empty cup.

Here are three simple steps to open up to receive:

    1. Give yourself permission to receive. You are the boss of your life. If you’re not receiving a life of grace and ease, it’s because you’re still making others the authority of your life.

    2. Take time daily to connect. Spend time in meditation, prayer, journaling or whatever works for you, but by all means, connect. This is a powerful way to set your inner compass to receiving.

    3. Be you! Pay attention to when you shut down your voice, your feelings and your needs. Then give yourself permission to share these things. If you struggle with this, go within and clean up the beliefs that stop you down. By loving yourself unconditionally, you send out an energetic message to the universe that says, “I deserve to receive simply for being me!”

Receiving is the loving thing to do. As you transition into this new belief, you will feel loved, guided and supported. You will shift from lack to abundance. And your life will flow magically with grace and ease.

Receiving is an act of service.

As you give yourself permission to receive, your cup will be so full that you’ll want everyone else to feel the way you do. You’ll serve others by lifting them up. You’ll want to give like never before. Your life will be your greatest act of service.

The #1 Nutrient You Need To Avoid A Stroke

Quick: What foods are rich in potassium? If you’re drawing a blank, you could be missing out on important protection from stroke, particularly ischemic stroke—the type caused by a blockage in a blood vessel supplying the heart.

Women are more likely than men to have a stroke and to die from it. But a recent study of more than 90,000 women ages 50 to 70 from New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine found that those who consumed the highest amounts of potassium in their diet were least likely to experience a stroke. Potassium-rich diets reduced stroke risk in general by 12 percent and the risk of ischemic stroke by 16 percent.

The benefit was even greater among women who did not have hypertension, or high blood pressure. In this subset of women, high potassium levels lowered the risk for all types of strokes by 21 percent and by 27 percent for ischemic stroke, compared to women with hypertension.

Other research has linked high potassium levels to lower blood pressure, which helps prevent stroke. But the study showed that potassium itself reduces stroke risk. “We think the beneficial effects act through other pathways, beyond the effects on blood pressure,” says study author Sylvia Wassertheil-Smoller, Ph.D., an epidemiologist at Albert Einstein and a principal investigator with the Women’s Health Initiative.

Unfortunately, both women and men fall far short of the recommended levels for potassium, which is needed for many body functions including heart and muscle function. “In the study, the average potassium intake from foods was 2611 mg/day,” says Wassertheil-Smoller. “That’s well below the recommended amount of 4700 mg/day by the Department of Agriculture or even the lower recommended amount of 3600 mg/day by the World Health Organization.”

Dependence on fast and processed food appears to be the culprit. “Many people don’t get enough potassium because they rely on convenience and restaurant foods and aren’t eating enough fruits and vegetables, which are rich sources of potassium,” says Alissa Rumsey, R.D., a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Yet, “potassium is pretty ubiquitous,” says Wassertheil-Smoller. “Foods rich in potassium are bananas, orange juice, yogurt, potatoes, unprocessed meats, and green, leafy vegetables like spinach.” Winter squash, sweet potatoes, white beans, halibut, broccoli, cantaloupe, pork tenderloin, lentils, milk, salmon, pistachios, raisins, chicken breast, and tuna boast especially plentiful potassium stores.

To boost your intake of this heart-healthy nutrient, Rumsey suggests aiming to consume at least five servings per day of fruits and vegetables and eat more fish and legumes. These measures can help you reach this goal:

    • Steam or roast a good supply of vegetables on Sunday, and use them for lunch and dinner during the week.
    • Keep fresh fruit around your home or office, and snack on it instead of processed snack foods like crackers or chips.
    • Aim to eat at least two to three servings of fatty fish per week.
    • Add beans or lentils to salads, soups, and stir-fries.
    • When dining out, order a salad, bean-based dishes, fish, fruit side dish, or steamed or roasted vegetables.
    • Drink low-fat milk instead of soda.

Stephen Colbert Has Finally Figured Out Hillary Clinton’s Illness

With Donald Trump accusing Hillary Clinton of being too frail to be president, and wacky health theories flying out of the GOP presidential candidate’s camp and beyond, “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert decided to spend time on Tuesday diagnosing the Democratic nominee.

And wouldn’t you know it, Clinton has something that afflicts about half the planet.

Addressing her critics, Colbert said, “You’re just tiptoeing around the medical condition that you’re really upset about, one that she has that no other president in history has ever faced. Hillary Clinton has Chronic No-Penis.”

“It’s congenital,” Colbert added. “…Every woman in her family has had the same thing.”

    Bali High

    2016-08-23-1471979701-4140362-BaliHigh2.jpg

Although I’ve been home from Bali several weeks, I keep dreaming I’m there…the sounds, the smells, images of the people wash over me:

    • The beauty of this island full of flowers and smiling faces.
    • The gamelan music, an orchestra of percussion instruments, bells and bamboo flutes that mimic the sounds of a Bali morning – insects, birds, roosters, ocean waves.
    • The scent of incense lingering from the daily offerings of carefully crafted coconut or palm frond containers full of colorful flowers, offered to appease the lower gods and honor the higher gods.
    • The chaos of cars, trucks and motorbikes carrying whole families and goods to market passing within inches on narrow roads – made safe by the gentle toot or toot-toot that signals passing.

Immersed in the Balinese culture for two weeks, I was reminded there are so many good ways to live. We visited my friend Susan, a psychologist, who lives in Bali. There is no work for her among the locals. They are too happy. Traveling with my daughter Lisa, we mused about what keeps the people contented. Lisa wrote about it in her blog: What the Balinese do for Anxiety.

As part of their Hindu Buddhist religion, as Lisa describes, everyone prepares and dedicates offerings to the gods. Every day. In every home, store and village. Before picking us up, our drivers prayed in their family temples for our safe trips. Children learn very young to play in a gamelan orchestra, and to dance the traditional Balinese dances. The dancing is complex, physically difficult, using every body part including head and eyes, in still and flowing patterns to the sound of the gamelan, each movement carrying meaning. The dances act out familiar stories that are sometimes funny, always teaching moral lessons. Characters include the gods of good and mischief and evil. Beautifully carved sacred masks and elaborate costumes are integral to the dances.

We saw several Balinese dance performances, and one night we were treated to another traditional form of theater – a shadow puppet show. Behind the screen, which we were invited to visit, was an entire family supporting the puppeteer. He told a piece of the traditional Ramayana story – an ancient, epic Hindu story. However, he improvised the telling for the audience (our small group of Americans.) He made it modern and relevant to us, including references to surprising things like Pokemon Go!

Steeped in tradition, ritual and shared beliefs, the Balinese are warm, relaxed and friendly. Good humor abounds. They seem untroubled by questions like, “Who am I?” “Where do I belong?” and “How can I feel safe?” Those questions are answered in the context of their daily lives, living with family, belonging to compound and village, doing the daily rituals, sharing in the many large ceremonies and celebrations.

Bali is an open-hearted culture. Thinking of it makes me happy. I hope my Bali dreams continue.

Since coming home, I’ve been asking myself questions: how might we build ritual and tradition more solidly into our daily lives? How open-hearted is the United States? And – what might be an American equivalent to the gentle, respectful horn toots on the highways that keep people calm, safe and cared for?

    COACHING QUESTIONS

    1. What new perspective have you gained from visiting other cultures (here or in other countries?)
    2. What rituals or traditions do you practice in your life?
    3. How do they help you feel safe and connect you with others?
    4. What rituals/traditions would you like to create in your life?
    5. When will you start?
    6. How do you contribute to the open-heartedness of your culture?

P.S. I promised to follow up on how well StopJetLag worked. It worked! Stopped jetlag in its tracks. Lisa and I recommend it heartily.

Is TMJ Disorder Costing You A Good Night’s Sleep?

If you are one of the estimated 40 million+ Americans who suffer each year from chronic sleep disorders or one of the additional 20 million who experience occasional sleeping problems, you know first hand how the problem can affect your quality of life. A sleep disorder can interfere with your work, your ability to drive and your participation in social activities.

Did you know that many patients who suffer from sleep disorders are also dealing with a problem directly related to disorders in their temporomandibular joint (TMJ)? The TMJ is the joint that attaches your lower jaw, or mandible, to the temporal bone of your head. More precisely, it is where the lower jaw fits into the skull and is supported by the muscles in your face. It is the joint that allows you to chew, swallow and yawn. However, when it isn’t functioning properly it can be the root of a lot of problems.

A disorder in this important joint can cause pain and discomfort in other parts of the body and these TMJ disorder symptoms — including sleep apnea, teeth grinding and tension headaches or migraines — can impact your ability to get a good night’s sleep.

Experts estimate that more than 44 million Americans have one of the several variants of TMJ disorder, or TMD, with women more prone to the condition than men. Pain when chewing is a common symptom, as are other warning signs including limited movement of the jaw or a locking sensation, ringing in the ears, jaw clicking and grating or popping of the jaw joint. These symptoms are often a result of muscle tension and misalignment in the jaw. Although minor symptoms may be relieved with a little rest, hot and cold packs, a soft diet, TMJ massage and/or jaw exercises, persistent symptoms can lead to chronic problems that disrupt your sleep and can become more difficult to treat.

    Sleep Apnea

We have all seen the images of tools used to manage sleep apnea that require sufferers to sleep with a CPAP mask, making them look like a super villain or scuba diver. However, obstructive sleep apnea is a potentially serious condition. Sufferers experience obstructed airflow and stop breathing repeatedly during sleep, sometimes for a minute or even longer. This may happen from five times an hour to more than 100 in severe cases. The body is damaged by only 5 of these episodes an hour, and as we learn more, it appears that even minor episodes can cause chronic damage.

When breathing stops, the brain reacts to the situation by producing a rush of adrenalin which in turn quickens the heartbeat. Muscles in the chest then work to resume airflow and the person gasps for a breath and falls back asleep. This scenario is then repeated multiple times during the same night while the person never realizes what is occurring. That’s because they never really “wake up” but only experience a short pause in sleep. This pause destroys the normal sleep cycle cascade which is critically important to health and brain function.

More and more studies are showing a connection between TMD and sleep disturbances. In many sleep apnea cases, a misaligned jaw joint or TMJD, is actually to blame. This is because the tongue’s position is impacted by the alignment of the upper and lower teeth. When the teeth are misaligned, the tongue can block the airway as you sleep. This problem with the jaw alignment or malocclusion can cause a person to wake up frequently throughout the night.

Untreated sleep apnea causes snoring and can lead to much more serious health issues such as high blood pressure and heart disease. In addition, people with sleep apnea do not get the rest they need because, as a preventative reaction, their brains keep them from falling into a deep sleep mode.

    Bruxism

Another symptom of TMD is bruxism, commonly called teeth grinding. A misalignment of the jaw can cause you to unconsciously grind or clench your teeth together.

Bruxism causes significant damage to your teeth and is something that is easily corrected with proper physiologic care. You would be surprised at how forcefully we can clench our teeth. As we are waking, the pressure when clamping the teeth together can reach about 200 pounds per square inch. However, when we are asleep, that force can reach more than 700 pounds per square inch!

Because of this force, people with severe bruxism can break their dental fillings and/or cause the outer layers of their tooth enamel to wear away, exposing the highly sensitive dentin. Additionally, this extreme jaw muscle tension can result in complications that include other TMJ disorder symptoms like lockjaw and tension headaches.

    Night Headaches

When the bite and the lower jaw are misaligned, muscles are strained which can result in head pain that can mimic a migraine. This pain can be around the forehead, on the back of the head or radiating down the neck.

The same obstructive breathing that causes sleep apnea also can cause nighttime or hypertensive headaches. To put it simply, lack of oxygen can trigger a painful headache.

Many people turn to over-the-counter pain medication for headaches rather than exploring the root cause of the pain. Common signs that a headache is related to a TMJ disorder include:

    ● A clicking or popping sound emanating from the jaw
    ● A bite that feels off or does not close properly
    ● Complaints of snoring at night from your spouse or family
    ● Forward head posture

Researchers from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine found that headaches related to TMJ dysfunction are frequently misdiagnosed as tension headaches. In a study of 583 patients with frequent headaches, 82 percent of female cases and 17 percent of male cases had symptoms associated with TMD.

    Finding Relief

If you think TMD could be causing your sleep problems, here are some tips you can try at home:

    ● Gently stretch your neck throughout the day
    ● Improve your posture
    ● Avoid chewing gum
    ● Gently massage your jaw muscles
    ● Commit to a soft diet
    ● Try to use other home remedies to lessen the severity of a TMD flare up
    ● Learn to combat stress with exercise or meditation. (Stress can exacerbate pain.)
    ● Move the jaw gently from side to side 10 times and then allow it to rest for a minute. Do this for 5 sets a few times a day. This will help to stretch the muscles of mastication.

Although the exercises above may help, if the system is not physiologically correct, the best advice is to get it corrected. The headaches can start as a nuisance but can eventually become incapacitating.

In my experience as a educator for TMJ dentists and clinical director at LVI Global, up to 85% of TMJ disorder symptoms can be resolved without prescription drugs or surgery. Instead, we return the jaw muscles to their natural place of physiologic rest which allows the system to function correctly. Treatment through neuromuscular dentistry strives to reduce or resolve symptoms by focusing on fixing the muscles that support the bite. The result is a dramatic lessening of muscle pain and in many cases, a better night’s sleep.

How To Deal With Grief: Life, Loss And Healing The Soul

Grief is forever. It doesn’t go away; it becomes a part of you. I will never stop grieving… That’s just how it is. Grief and love are conjoined, you don’t get one without the other… ― Jandy Nelson, The Sky Is Everywhere

    2016-08-22-1471838133-9406627-sGRIEFsmallXRBEHSNA.jpg

Life and death are intertwined. The fact that we breathe is to acknowledge our humanness, mortality and the inevitability of death. Life and love are intertwined. From the moment we are born, we begin to form attachments – to family, things, experiences, and relationships. So, what happens when we lose someone we love or have to face our own impending death? We grieve. And while life and loss are an inevitable and constant cycle, grief is often the elephant in the room. People rarely want to face others’ pain. I find though, that the deepest human connections are formed, not only in experiencing the joys of life with others, but as equally, in loving them as they process emotions, like grief, giving them a safe place to unmask, and holding a sacred space where you allow them to “be” – for their love is as sacred as their pain. I had the opportunity to learn from three extraordinary people, who have dealt with grief in different ways – DebiJo lost her husband to leukemia; Laura lost her son to suicide. Beth lives with metastatic breast cancer and faces her own mortality daily.

Your True Friends Allow You to Un-Mask & Meet You Where You Are. “When my son died, people did not know what to say, especially when the death was a result of suicide. I came to detest the phrase, “I am so sorry for your loss.” I now can’t bring myself to say those words to a grieving loved one. Through grief, I learned that there were no words that would make my grief less, but a touch, a hug, silence, or holding my hand made me feel supported. Some people understood while others must have found it off-putting. I could not worry what others felt. My priority was to take care of my loved ones and me. However, I had to come first for me to help those I loved. My loved ones and true friends understood. I had no energy to wear a mask of well-being. I had to grieve in my own way. There was no right or wrong. No time frame. Queen Elizabeth II is credited with having said, “Grief is the price we pay for love.” So if we continue to love, our grief will change but it is because we love and for that I am grateful.” – Laura Reid

Get It Out – Bottling up Grief Isn’t an Effective Coping Mechanism. I’m living with terminal breast cancer, which means I’m not only dealing with my own impending mortality, but also watching friends with the same illness getting sicker and dying. Each death breaks my heart anew, and I can’t help but imagine how, all too soon, my family will feel like my friends’ families do. The only thing I’ve found that helps me swim back from the depths of my grief is to let it out. Sometimes that means I just sit and sob; other times, I write some more, just to get it all out. – Beth Caldwell

    2016-08-22-1471838182-6868364-sGRIEFsmall.jpg

Be a Living Example of Your Love. My husband of 27 years passed away after years of battling leukemia. I handled my grief by remembering the gifts he gave me. He encouraged me to nurture relationships while we dealt with his illness and ultimate death, so I would not be alone when he was gone. He encouraged my work, so I would have fulfillment. He encouraged me to one day find love again so I would have a partner. A day doesn’t go by that I don’t miss him. But I remember the fun times we had, the love we shared, and memories that can’t be taken away. I honor him instead of grieve for him, and have a ritual I do on our anniversary, the anniversary of his death and his birthday. I get a balloon and write to him and let it float up to the sky. I light a candle every Sunday in church and talk to him about the week, and ask him to hold me tight so I won’t fall. My grief is the joy I had in knowing this man, and so I honor him every day.

    2016-08-22-1471838342-655097-sUNHAPPYWOMANsmall.jpg

While there is no crash course on life, grieving or dying, what I learned from Laura, DebiJo and Beth are that there is no right or wrong way to grieve and certainly, no limit on the time. It’s also important to let it out, and allow yourself to feel your way through it. Lastly, as much as possible, focus on life and find ways to honor yourself or the one that you lost. As Elizabeth Bucchianeri so gracefully wrote, “So it’s true, when all is said and done, grief is the price we pay for love.

    #HeartWarrior: Maddy Reyes

Maddy Reyes is a 12-year-old Heart Warrior participating in the 2016 Puget Sound Heart and Stroke Walk. She is also a social media ambassador, @MaddyGoCheer.

I have a different heart than most kids. When I was born I was diagnosed with a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot. The doctors and surgeons were watching my heart very closely until I was four months old.

When I was four months old my doctor told my parents that I would have to get open heart surgery to keep my heart safe.

2016-08-22-1471899028-4339285-FB_IMG_1455171105617_resized.jpg The surgeons fixed a hole in my heart and made my pulmonary artery bigger. My doctor is now watching my heart closely to see when I will need a new valve. When I get to an age when I need a valve transplant, I will need to have open heart surgery again but the doctors are trying to wait as long as possible until I have my next surgery.

Every year I have to go to a children’s hospital for checkups. My checkups are different than a normal checkup though. For a heart checkup you have to do a treadmill test which tells the doctors how fast my heart rate goes and what my endurance level is. Also there is an echocardiogram which shows the doctors how my heart is doing and the heartbeat. When you go they also have you do a sticker test when they put stickers on you with a bunch of wires to see your heart rate. Last but not least, my least favorite one is the MRI. During the MRI you have to get an IV because for the doctors to see your heart they put color in the IV to make a good picture so they can see the little details and in a MRI you have to stay really still and calm in a big long tube for an hour and a half.

    2016-08-22-1471899090-9290638-heartwarriors.png
I am very healthy and do lots of physical activities even though I have a heart condition. I do competitive cheerleading almost every day of the week and I tumble, stunt, and jump. I also do dance four days a week and the kinds of dance I do are tap, jazz, and ballet. I also run a lot of races and am on the cross country team. I am glad to be where I am right now and continue to grow stronger as I get older.

What No One Told Me About Following My Passion

Like much of my generation in America, I don’t have to worry about where my next meal will come from. I don’t have to worry about how I’ll get to work. I don’t have to worry about a safe, dry place to sleep.

So I worry about something else, with which much less of the world has the luxury of preoccupation: purpose. Some spend their days searching for food; I spend my life hunting meaning–full, but unsatisfied.

Most millennials’ basic needs have been met–a prerequisite for fulfilling our greatest potential. If we don’t make our lives meaningful, we will have dishonored and squandered our opportunity. Perhaps this responsibility explains our fixation with purpose.

We know what we want. The question is: how do we find it?

Hoping that international travel and novel experiences would infuse my life with meaning, I moved to Canada when I graduated college. There I learned, as I conclude in my essay The Myth of Wanderlust, “you can’t drive to purpose.”

So I returned home and pursued my lifelong passion of writing. For the last two years, I’ve followed a self-authored, step-by-step plan to successfully discovering, integrating and making money from my passions. A marketing position, an editing role and six months of self-employment later, I realized you can’t write to purpose, either.

Passion, I’ve learned, does not equal purpose.

    Why?

Here’s a synopsis of the 8000 words I initially spewed on this question:

Passion, the way many millennials have come to define it, is self-oriented. Passion is “a strong inclination toward a self-defining activity that one loves, values, and in which one invests a substantial amount of time and energy,” explains one study published in Self and Identity.

Purpose, on the other hand, is other-oriented. One Stanford study found that individuals with meaning mindsets “seek connections, give to others, and orient themselves to a larger purpose.”

Modern passion is pleasure-oriented. One influential study on passion defines it as “an autonomous internalization that leads individuals to choose to engage in the activity that they like.” In other words, passion’s answer to “Why are you doing this?” is “Because I like it.”

But meaningfulness, sums the Stanford study, sometimes involves “feeling bad”.

Passion is short-term. Though we tend to assume it’s lifelong, passion changes more than we anticipate because we change more than we anticipate. As Terri Trespicio observes in her TEDx Talk, “Passion is not a plan. Passion is a feeling, and feelings change.”

Purpose is hardy. Gritty individuals, explains one study, prioritize long-term goals. This long-term perspective, another study notes, helps give “more weight to meaning than pleasure” and solidifies self-control.

I don’t regret following my passion. In fact, I still endorse my strategy. Passions help us understand who we are and what we want. They bring vitality and joy to our days. But following your passion is a deceptively slow, uncertain way to purpose.

If I could tell myself anything three years ago when I graduated college, it would probably be this:

“Follow your passion, sure. But don’t expect it to produce your purpose.”
